Tilt steering wheel
To change the steering wheel angle,
hold the steering wheel, push down the
lock release lever, tilt the steering
wheel to the desired angle and return
the lever to its original position.
CAUTION
Do not adjust the steering wheel
while the vehicle is moving. Doing
so may cause the driver to mishan-
dle the vehicle and an accident may
occur resulting in death or serious
injuries.
After adjusting the steering wheel,
try moving it up and down to make
sure it is locked in position.
When you move the steering wheel, an
electrical motor noise may be heard. This
is the power steering motor noise, and is
not a malfunction.
Outside rear view mirrors—
Adjust the mirror so that you can just
see the side of your vehicle in the mir-
ror.
Be careful when judging the size or dis-
tance of any object seen in the outside
rear view mirror on the passenger ’s side
because it is a convex mirror. Any object
seen in a convex mirror will look smaller
and farther away than when seen in a flat
mirror.

(k) SRS Warning Light
This indicator comes on when the igni-
tion key is turned to the “ON” position.
It goes off after about 6 seconds. This
means the SRS front airbags, SRS side
airbags, curtain shield airbags and seat
belt pretensioners are operating proper-
ly.
This warning light system monitors the
airbag sensor assembly, front airbag sen-
sors, side and curtain shield airbag sensor
assemblies, curtain shield airbag sensor
assemblies, driver ’s seat position sensor,
driver’s seat belt buckle switch, front pas-
senger occupant classification system,
“AIR BAG ON” indicator light, “AIR BAG
OFF” indicator light, front passenger ’s seat
position sensor, front passenger ’s seat
belt buckle switch, seat belt pretensioner
assemblies, inflators, interconnecting wir-
ing and power sources. If any of the following conditions occurs,
this indicates a malfunction of the airbags
or seat belt pretensioners. Contact your
Scion dealer as soon as possible.
When the ignition key is turned to the
“ON” position, the light does not come
on or remains on for more than about
6 seconds or flashes.
The light comes on or starts flashing
while you are driving.
The SRS warning light and “AIR BAG
OFF” indicator light will come on if there
is a malfunction in the front passenger
occupant classification system.
(l) Electric Power Steering System Warning Light
The light comes on when the ignition key
is turned to the “ON” positron. If the elec-
tric power steering system warning light
works properly, the light turns off after a
few seconds. If the system has malfunc-
tions, the light comes on again. If the following conditions occur, this
indicates a malfunction somewhere in
the components monitored by the warn-
ing light system. Contact your Scion
dealer as soon as possible to service
the vehicle.
The light does not come on when the
ignition key is turned to the “ON” posi-
tion or remains on.
The light stays on while you are driv-
ing.
CAUTION
If the electric power steering system
warning light comes on, take your ve-
hicle to Scion dealer as soon as pos-
sible. In this case, more effort is re-
quired for the steering wheel to turn
than usual. Drive your vehicle while
firmly gripping the steering wheel.

CHECKING SERVICE REMINDER
INDICATORS (except the low fuel level
warning light)1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Open one of the side doors or back door.
The open door warning light should
come on.
3. Close the door. The open door warning light should go
off.
4. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” posi- tion, but do not start the engine.
All the service reminder indicators except
the open door warning light should come
on. The “ABS”, “VSC OFF”, tire pressure
warning light, electric power steering sys-
tem warning light, “MAINT REQD” remind-
er light and slip indicator light go off after
a few seconds. The SRS warning light
goes off after about 6 seconds.
If any service reminder indicator or warn-
ing buzzer does not function as described
above, have it checked by your Scion
dealer as soon as possible.

“START”—Starter motor on. The key
will return to the “ON” position when
released.
For starting tips, see page 188.
“ON”—Engine on and all accessories
on.
This is the normal driving position.
“ACC”—Accessories such as the radio
operate, but the engine is off.
If you leave the key in the “ACC” or
“LOCK” position and open the driver’s
door, a buzzer will remind you to remove
the key.“LOCK”—Engine is off and the steering
wheel is locked. The key can be re-
moved only at this position.
You must push in the key to turn the key
from “ACC” to the “LOCK” position. On
vehicles with an automatic transmission,
the selector lever must be put in the “P”
position before pushing the key.
When starting the engine, the key may
seem stuck at the “LOCK” position. To
free it, first be sure the key is pushed all
the way in, and then rock the steering
wheel slightly while turning the key gently.
Approximately five hours after the engine
is turned off, you may hear a sound com-
ing from underneath the luggage compart-
ment for several minutes. This is normal
operation and does not indicate a malfunc-
tion. (See “Leak detection pump” on page
viii.)
CAUTION
For manual transmission:
Never remove the key when the ve-
hicle is moving, as this will lock the
steering wheel and result in loss of
steering control.
NOTICE
Do not leave the key in the “ON”
position if the engine is not running.
The battery will discharge and the
ignition could be damaged.

To turn off: Push “VSC OFF” switch
briefly.
The slip indicator light will come on.
When the ignition key is turned to “ON”
position, the traction control system and
vehicle stability control system always turn
on.
Traction control system turns back on
when the vehicle reaches to the certain
speed.
To turn on: Push “VSC OFF” switch
once again.
The slip indicator light will go off.
CAUTION
When traction control and vehicle sta-
bility control system are off, be espe-
cially careful and drive at a speed
appropriate to the road conditions. As
these are systems to ensure vehicle
stability and driving force, do not
turn off traction control and vehicle
stability control system unless neces-
sary.
In the following cases, contact your Scion
dealer:
The slip indicator light does not come
on when the ignition key is turned to
“ON” position.
The slip indicator light remains on after
the ignition key is turned to “ON” posi-
tion.
The slip indicator light comes on in the
normal driving mode while driving. The vehicle stability control system
helps provide integrated control of the
systems such as an anti lock brake
system, traction control, engine control,
etc. This system automatically controls
the brakes and engine to help prevent
the vehicle from skidding when corner-
ing on a slippery road surface or oper-
ating steering wheel abruptly.
The vehicle stability control system is acti-
vated when the vehicle speed is about
more than 15 km/h (9 mph).
You may hear a sound in the engine
compartment for a few seconds just after
the vehicle begins to move. This means
that the system is in the self
−check mode,
but does not indicate a malfunction.

NOTICE
To prevent the fuse from being
blown, do not use the electricity
over the total vehicle capacity of
12V/120W.
To prevent the battery from being
discharged, do not use the power
outlet longer than necessary when
the engine is not running.
Close the power outlet lid when the
power outlet is not in use. Inserting
anything other than an appropriate
plug that fits the outlet, or allowing
any liquid to get into the outlet may
cause electrical failure or short cir-
cuits.

Steering switches are installed on the left
side of the steering wheel.
You can use these switches to operate
the audio volume control, radio, CD player
and so on.
For more detailed information, see the
separate “SCION Audio System Owner ’s
Manual” or “SCION Navigation System
Owner ’s Manual”.
CAUTION
Operate the switches with due care
while you are driving to avoid acci-
dents.

An AUX adapter is located as shown.
By inserting a mini plug into the AUX
adapter, you can listen to music from a
portable audio device through the vehicle’s
speaker system.
If you install an audio system other than
a genuine audio system, you will not be
able to use the AUX adapter.
