Gauges and meters
The following gauges, meters and display illuminate when the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch is in IGNITION ON mode.
Tachometer
Displays the engine speed in revolutions per minute.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
Displays the engine coolant temperature.
Fuel gauge
Displays the quantity of fuel remaining in the tank.
Speedometer
Displays the vehicle speed.
Vo l t m e t e r
Displays the charge state.

NOTICE
nTo prevent damage to the engine and its components
lDo not let the indicator needle of the tachometer enter the red zone, which
indicates the maximum engine speed.
lThe engine may be overheating if the engine coolant temperature gauge is
in the red zone (“H”). In this case, immediately stop the vehicle in a safe
place, and check the engine after it has cooled completely. (

nWhile driving
lWhen the voltmeter indicates more than 19 V or less than 9 V, the battery
may be malfunctioning. Have your vehicle checked at your Toyota dealer.

When the engine oil pressure gauge does not work properly, immediately
stop the engine and contact your Toyota dealer.

When driving
nIf the low speed fourwheel drive in dicator light or the center differen
tial lock indicator light blinks
lIf the low speed four−wheel drive indicator light continues to blink when
using the four−wheel drive control switch, stop the vehicle completely,
move the shift lever to “N” and operate the switch again.
lIf the shift lever is moved before the low speed four−wheel drive indicator
light has turned on/off, a beep sounds and the transfer position may not
successfully change. In this case, stop the vehicle completely, return the
shift lever to “N” and operate the switch again.
lIf the engine coolant temperature is too low, the four−wheel drive control
system may not be able to shift. When the engine is warmer press the
switch again.
If the low speed four−wheel drive indicator light or the center differential lock
indicator light continues to blink even after attempting the above, there may
be a malfunction in the engine, the brake system or the four−wheel drive sys−
tem. In this case, you may not be able to shift between “H4” and “L4”, and
the center differential lock may not be operable. Have the vehicle inspected
by your Toyota dealer immediately.

Winter driving tips
Carry out the necessary preparations and inspections before driving
the vehicle in winter. Always drive the vehicle in a manner appropri
ate to the prevailing weather conditions.
nPrewinter preparations
lUse fluids that are appropriate to the prevailing outside tem−
peratures.

Have a service technician inspect the level and specific grav−
ity of battery electrolyte.
lHave the vehicle fitted with four snow tires or purchase a set
of tire chains for the rear tires.
Ensure that all tires are the same size and brand, and that chains
match the size of the tires.

lNote that when making a turn, the trailer wheels will be closer than
the vehicle wheels to the inside of the turn. Compensate by making
a larger than normal turning radius.
lCrosswinds and rough roads will adversely affect handling of your
vehicle and trailer, causing sway
. Periodically check the rear to
prepare for being passed by large trucks or buses, which may
cause your vehicle and trailer to sway. If swaying occurs, firmly grip
the steering wheel, reduce speed immediately but gradually, and
steer straight ahead. Never increase speed. If you make no
extreme correction with the stee ring or brakes, your vehicle and
trailer will stabilize.
lTake care when passing other vehicles. Passing requires consider−
able distance. After passing a vehi
cle, do not forget the length of
your trailer, and be sure you hav e plenty of room before changing
lanes.
lIn order to maintain engine braking efficiency when driving on a
long steep downgrade, do not use overdrive. Transmission shift
range position must be in “4”, in “S” mode.
lDue to the added load of the trailer, your vehicle’s engine may
overheat on hot days (at temperatur
es over 85°F [30°C] when driv−
ing up a long or steep grade. If the engine coolant temperature
gauge indicates overheating, immediately turn off the air condition−
ing (if in use), pull your vehicle off
the road and stop in a safe spot.

Maintenance and care
CAUTION
The engine compartment contains many mechanisms and fluids that may
move suddenly, become hot, or become electrically energized. To avoid death
or serious injury.
nWhen working on the engine compartment
lKeep hands, clothing, and tools away from the moving fan and engine
drive belt.
lBe careful not to touch the engine, inverter, radiator, exhaust manifold, etc.
right after driving as they may be hot. Oil and other fluids may also be hot.
lDo not leave anything that may burn easily, such as paper or rags, in the
engine compartment.
lDo not smoke, cause sparks or expose an open flame to fuel or the bat−
tery. Fuel and battery fumes are flammable.
lBe extremely cautious when working on the battery. It contains poisonous
and corrosive sulfuric acid.
nWhen working near the electric cooling fan or radiator grille
Be sure the ignition is off. With the “ENGINE START STOP” switch in IGNI−
TION ON mode, the electric cooling fan may automatically start to run if the
air conditioning is on and/or if the coolant temperature is high.

nWhen working on or under the vehicle
lDo not get under the vehicle with just the jack supporting it.
Always use automotive jack stands or other solid supports.
lUse eye protection to prevent flying or falling material, fluid spray, etc. from
getting in your eyes.
NOTICE
nIf you remove the air cleaner filter
Driving with the air cleaner filter removed may cause excessive engine wear
due to dirt in the air. Also a backfire could cause a fire in the engine compart−
ment.
