Cleaning and protecting the vehicle exterior
nAutomatic car washes
lFold the mirrors back and retract the antenna before washing the vehicle.
lBrushes used in automatic car washes may scratch the vehicle surface
and harm your vehicle’s paint.
nHigh pressure car washes
lDo not allow the nozzles of the car wash to come within close proximity
of the windows.
lBefore car wash, check that the fuel filler door is closed.
nAluminum wheels
Remove any dirt immediately by using a neutral detergent. Do not use hard
brushes or abrasive cleaners. Do not use strong or harsh chemical cleaners.
Use the same mild detergent and wax as used on the paint.
nBumpers and side moldings
Do not scrub with abrasive cleaners. Perform the following to protect the vehicle and maintain it in prime
condition.
lWorking from top to bottom, liberally apply water to the vehicle
body, wheel wells and underside of the vehicle to remove any
dirt and dust.
Wash the vehicle body using a sponge or soft cloth, such as a cham−
ois.
lFor hard−to−remove marks, use car wash soap and rinse thor−
oughly with water.
lWipe away any water.

Wax the vehicle when the waterproof coating deteriorates.
If water does not bead on a clean surface, apply wax when the vehi−
cle body is cool.

Maintenance and care
nCleaning the inside of the rear window
Do not use glass cleaner to clean the rear window, as this may cause dam−
age to the rear window defogger heater wires. Use a cloth dampened with
lukewarm water to gently wipe the window clean. Wipe the window in
strokes running parallel to the heater wires or antenna.
nCaring for leather areas
Toyota recommends cleaning the interior of the vehicle at least twice a year
to maintain the quality of the vehicle’s interior.
nShampooing the carpets
There are several commercial foaming−type cleaners available. Use a
sponge or brush to apply the foam. Rub in overlapping circles. Do not apply
water. The excellent results are obtained by keeping the carpet as dry as
possible.
nSeat belts
Clean with mild soap and lukewarm water using a cloth or sponge. Also
check the belts periodically for excessive wear, fraying or cuts.
CAUTION
nWater in the vehicle
lBe careful not to splash or spill liquid on the floor.
lDo not get any of the SRS components or wiring in the vehicle interior wet.

Electrical malfunction may cause the airbags to deploy or not function
properly, resulting in death or serious injury.

NOTICE
nCleaning detergents
Do not use the following types of detergent, as they may discolor the vehicle
interior or cause streaks or damage to painted surfaces.
lNon−seat portions: Organic substances such as benzene or gasoline,
alkaline or acidic solutions, dye, or bleach.
lSeats: Acidic solutions, such as thinner, benzene, or alcohol.
nPreventing damage to leather surfaces
Observe the following precautions to avoid damage to and deterioration of
leather surfaces.
lRemove any dust or dirt on leather surfaces immediately.
lDo not expose the vehicle to direct sunlight for extended periods of time.
Park the vehicle in the shade, especially during summer.
lDo not place items made of vinyl, plastic, or that contain wax on the uphol−
stery, as they may stick to the leather surface if the vehicle interior heats
up significantly.
nWater on the floor
Do not wash the vehicle floor with water.
Vehicle systems such as the audio system may be damaged if water comes
into contact with electrical components under the floor of the vehicle, and
may also cause the body to rust.

Be careful not to scratch or damage the heater wires or antenna.

nIf the tire pressure warning system is inoperative
The tire pressure warning system
will become inoperati ve in the follow−
ing conditions:
(When the condition becomes normal, the system will work properly.)
lIf tires not equipped with tire pressure warning valves and transmit−
ters are used.
lIf the ID code on the tire pressure warning valves and transmitters is
not registered in the tire pressure warning computer.
lIf the tire inflation pressure is more than 73 psi (500 kPa, 5.1 kgf/cm2
or bar).
The tire pressure warning system may become inoperative in the follow−
ing conditions:
(When the condition becomes normal, the system will work properly.)
lIf electronic devices or facilities us ing similar radio wave frequencies
are nearby.
lIf a radio set at similar frequencies is in use in the vehicle.
lIf a window tint that affects the radio wave signals is installed.
lIf there is a lot of snow or ice on the vehicle, in particular around the
wheels or wheel housings.
lIf non−genuine Toyota wheels are used. (Even if you use Toyota
wheels, the tire pressu re warning system may not work properly with
some types of tires.)
lIf tire chains are used.
lIf the spare tire is in a location subject to poor radio wave signal
reception.
lIf a large metallic object which caninterfere with sign al reception is
put in the luggage compartment.
nIf the tire pressure warning light comes on after blinking for 1
minute frequently
If the tire pressure warning light comes on after blinking 1 minute fre−
quently when the “ENGINE START STOP” switch is turned to IGNITION
ON mode, have it checked by Toyota dealer.

If the electronic key does not operate properly
Locking and unlocking the doors and key linked functions
Locks all doors
Closes the windows/moon
roof (turn and hold)
Unlocks all doors
Turning the key rearward
unlocks the driver ’s door.
Turning the key once again
unlocks the other doors.
Opens the windows/moon roof
(turn and hold)
If communication between the electronic key and vehicle is inter
rupted (
P. 26) or the electronic key cannot be used because the
battery is depleted, the smart key system and wireless remote con
trol cannot be used. In such cases,
the doors can be opened or the
engine can be started by following the procedure below.
