range, top up with coolant at the earliest opportunity ⇒ .
WARNING
•
If your vehicle is immobilised for any technical reasons, move it to a
safe distance from traffic. Turn off the engine, turn on the hazard lights and
place the warning triangle.
•
Never open the bonnet if you can see or hear steam or coolant escaping
from the engine compartment. Risk of scalding. Wait until you can no
longer see or hear escaping steam or coolant.
•
The engine compartment of any motor vehicle is a dangerous area!
Before carrying out any work in the engine compartment, switch off the
engine and allow it to cool down. Alwa ys note the corresponding warnings

information ⇒page 111.
Turn sig nals
The warning lamp flashes when the turn signals are in oper-
ation.Depending on which turn signal is operated, either the left
or right
indi-
cator lamp flashes. Both warning lamps will flash at the same time when the
hazard warning lights are switched on.
If one turn signal fails, the warning lamp will start flashing twice as fast.

WARNING
•
Always close the tailgate properly. Risk of accident or injury.
•
The tailgate must not be opened when the reverse or rear fog lights are
lit. This may damage the lighting units.
•
Do not close the tailgate by pushin g it down with your hand on the
window. The glass could shatter. Risk of injury!
•
Ensure the tailgate is locked after closing. If not, it may open unexpect-
edly while driving.
•
If the tailgate is not fully closed, open it with the handle and close it
again correctly. Do not try to close it by pressing on the surface of the tail-
gate, as this may damage the surface.
•
Never allow children to play in or ar ound the vehicle. A locked vehicle
can be subjected to extremely high and low temperatures, depending on
the time of year. This could cause serious injuries/illness. It could even
have fatal consequences. Close and lock both the tailgate and all the other
doors when you are not using the vehicle.
•
Never close the tailgate without observing and ensuring it is clear, to do
otherwise could cause serious injury to you and others. Make sure that no
one is in the path of the tailgate.
•
Never drive with the tailgate open or half-closed, exhaust gasses may
penetrate into the interior of th e vehicle. Danger of poisoning!
•
If only the boot is opened then do not leave the key inside. The vehicle
may not be opened if the key is left inside.
Emergency opening
This allows the vehicle to be opened if the central locking
does not operate (for example if the battery is flat)There is a groove in the boot allowing access to the emergency
opening mechanism.
Opening the tailgate from inside the luggage compartment
– Insert the key bit in the groove and unlock the locking system, turning the key from right to left, as shown by the arrow

Lights and visibility
122This function is activated by turning the exterior heated rearview mirror*
control forwards ⇒ page 126.
WARNING
•
Worn and dirty wiper blades obstruct visibility and reduce safety levels.
•
In cold conditions, you should not use the wash / wipe system unless
you have warmed the windscreen with the heating and ventilation system.
The washer fluid could otherwise freeze on the windscreen and obscure
your view of the road.
•
Always note the corresponding warnings on ⇒page 226, “Changing
windscreen wiper blades”.Caution
In icy conditions, always check that the wiper blades are not frozen to the
glass before using the wipers for the first time. If you switch on the wipers
when the wiper blades are frozen to the windscreen, you could damage both
the wiper blades and the wiper motor.
Note
•
The windscreen wipers will only work when the ignition is switched on.
•
In certain versions of vehicles with alarms, the windscreen wiper will only
work when the ignition is on and the bonnet closed.
•
When in use, the wipers do not go as far as the rest position. When the
lever is moved to position 0, they are totally hidden.
•
The next speed down will automatically be selected if speed ⇒ page 121,
fig. 86 or is selected when the vehicle stops. The set speed will be
resumed when the vehicle starts again
•
The windscreen will be wiped again after approximately five seconds once
the “automatic wipe/wash system” has been operated while the vehicle is in
transit (automatic function). If you activate the wipers less than three
seconds after the drip function, a new wash sequence will begin without the last wipe. To reactivate the “automatic” function the ignition must be turned
off and on again.
•
When the “intermittent wipe function” is on, the intervals are directly
proportional to the speed. This way, the higher the vehicle speed the shorter
the intervals.
•
The wiper will try to wipe away any obstacles that are on the windscreen.
The wiper will stop moving if the obstacle blocks its path. Remove the
obstacle and switch the wiper back on again.
•
Before removing any objects that may be trapped in the side areas of the
windscreen, always move the wiper arms to the service position (horizontal).
•
The heat output of the heated jets* is controlled automatically when the
ignition is switched on, depending upon the outside temperature.

Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning
152With low temperatures outside, the air recirculation increases the effective-
ness of the heating system by heating the air inside the passenger compart-
ment rather than the air from outside.
Air distribution
Control for setting the flow of air in the required direction. – Air distribution towards the windsc reen. Air recirculation is, for safety
reasons, not possible in this position. – Air distribution to the upper body. – Air distribution to footwell – Air distribution to the windscreen and the foot well.
Blower
The air flow can be set at four speeds with the control . The air flow should
always be set at the lowest speed when driving slowly.
WARNING
•
For road safety all windows must be clear of ice, snow, and condensa-
tion. This is essential to ensure good visibility. Please familiarise yourself
with the correct operation of the heat ing and ventilation system, including
the anti-fog/defrost functions for the windscreens.
•
In air recirculation mode, no ambient air enters the vehicle interior. The
windows can quickly fog over if the heating is switched off. Therefore, you
should never leave the air recirculation mode switched on for longer
periods, as this increases the risk of an accident.Note
Please observe the general notes ⇒page 160.

Maximum heat output, which is needed to defrost the windows quickly, is
only available when the engine has reached its operating temperature.
Air conditioner
When the air conditioning system is switched on, not only the temperature,
but also the air humidity in the vehicle interior is reduced. This improves comfort for the vehicle occupants and prevents misting of the windows when
the ambient air humidity is high.
If the air conditioning system cannot be
switched on this may be caused by
the following reasons:
•
The engine may not be running.
•
The blower is switched off.
•
The ambient air temperature is lower than +3°C.
•
The air conditioning system compress or has been temporarily switched
off because the engine coolant temperature is too high.
•
The air conditioning fuse is faulty.
•
Another fault in the vehicle. Have the air conditioning checked by a qual-
ified workshop.
Air recirculation mode
Air recirculation mode prevents fumes or un pleasant smells from entering the vehicle.
