59 Getting started
Driving
Switching on windshield wipers
Turn the combination switch in
direction of arrow 1 to the desired
position, depending on the intensity of
the rain.

Only switch on intermittent wiping under
wet weather conditions or in the presence
of precipitation.
Turn the combination switch in
direction of arrow 1 to positionI.
After the initial wipe, pauses between
wipes are automatically controlled by the

the resistance point.
The windshield wipers wipe one time
without washer fluid.
If the windshield wipers fail to function at all with
the combination switch in positionI,

set the combination switch to the next
higher wiper speed

have the windshield wipers checked at the
nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Center
!Do not leave windshield wipers on an inter-
mittent setting when the vehicle is taken to an
automatic car wash or during windshield clean-
ing. Windshield wipers will operate in the pres-
ence of water sprayed on the windshield, and
windshield wipers may be damaged as a result.
!If you have set intermittent wiping, dirt on
the surface of the rain sensor or optical effects
may cause the windshield wipers to wipe in an
undesired fashion. This could then damage the
windshield wiper blades or scratch the wind-
shield. You should therefore switch off the wind-
shield wipers when weather conditions are dry.
iIntermittent wiping is interrupted when the
vehicle is at a standstill and a door is opened.
This protects persons getting into or out of the
vehicle from being sprayed.
Intermittent wiping will be continued when

all doors are closed
and

the gear selector lever is in positionDorR
or

the wiper setting is changed using the
combination switch

The vehicle will lock again automatically
and rearm the alarm system within approx-
imately 40 seconds of unlocking if neither
a door nor the trunk is opened. Global locking

nal is activated at the factory. If you wish to de-
activate the feature or adjust its signal volume,
contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
iThe vehicle could inadvertently unlock if the
SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is within 3 ft (1 m)
of the vehicle and

an outside door handle is splashed with
water

you attempt to clean an outside door handle

Headlamp cleaning system
The headlamp cleaning button is located
on the left side of the dashboard.

Switch on the ignition (page 40).
Press button1.
The headlamps are cleaned with a
high-pressure water jet.

Rear view mirrors
For information on setting the rear view
mirrors, see “Mirrors” (
page 49).
Auto-dimming rear view mirrors
The reflection brightness of the exterior
rear view mirror on the driver’s side and
the interior rear view mirror will respond
automatically to glare when

the ignition is switched on
and

incoming light from headlamps falls on
the sensor in the interior rear view mir-
ror.
The interior rear view mirror will not react if

reverse gear is engaged

the interior lighting is switched on
iThe headlamps will automatically be
cleaned when you have

switched on the headlamps
and

operated the windshield wipers with wind-
shield washer fluid fifteen times
When you switch off the ignition, the counter
resets.

Retractable hardtop
Opening/closing with retractable
hardtop switch
Warning!G
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
SmartKey or SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO*
from the starter switch, take it with you, and
lock the vehicle. Do not leave children
unattended in the vehicle, or with access to
an unlocked vehicle. A child’s unsupervised
access to a vehicle could result in an
accident and/or serious personal injury.
!Never sit or place heavy objects on the
rear shelf. Doing so could cause damage to the
retractable hardtop and the rear shelf.
!Please keep in mind that weather conditions
can sometimes change rapidly. Make sure to
close the retractable hardtop when leaving the
vehicle. If water enters the vehicle interior,
vehicle electronics could be damaged which is
not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited
Warranty.
!When opening and closing the retractable
roof, make sure

there is sufficient clearance for the retract-
able hardtop to move up and for the trunk lid
to move back

the luggage cover is installed, extended and
closed

the trunk is loaded only to the height of the
luggage cover

luggage/cargo does not push up the closed
luggage cover

the trunk lid is closed

the outside temperature is above +5°F
(–15°C)

the roof is dry and clean when opening
Otherwise the retractable hardtop and trunk
as well as other parts of the vehicle could be
damaged.
Warning!G
Before operating the retractable hardtop,
make sure there is no danger of anyone
being injured by the moving parts (retract-
able roof, roof frame, and trunk lid) due to in-
attention.
Hands must never be placed near the roof
frame, upper windshield area, hardtop, shelf
behind roll bars, or trunk lid while the re-
tractable hardtop is being raised or lowered.
Serious personal injury may occur.
If potential danger exists, release retract-
able hardtop switch immediately. This im-
mediately interrupts the raising or lowering
procedure.

on the lower part of the center console.

Driving instructions
The treadwear indicator appears as a solid
band across the tread.Specified tire inflation pressures must be
maintained. This applies particularly if the
tires are subjected to extreme operating
conditions (e.g. high speeds, heavy loads,
high ambient temperatures).

page 291).
Hydroplaning
Depending on the depth of the water layer
on the road, hydroplaning may occur, even
at low speeds and with new tires. Reduce
vehicle speed, avoid track grooves in the
road and apply brakes cautiously in the
rain.
Warning!G
Although the applicable federal motor
vehicle safety laws consider a tire to be
worn when the treadwear indicators (TWI)
become visible at approximately
1/16in (1.6 mm), we recommend that you
do not allow your tires to wear down to
that level. As tread depth approaches
1/8in (3 mm), the adhesion properties on a
wet road are sharply reduced.
Depending upon the weather and/or road
surface (conditions), the tire traction varies
widely.
Warning!G
Do not drive with a flat tire. A flat tire affects
the ability to steer or brake the vehicle. You
may lose control of the vehicle. Continued
driving with a flat tire or driving at high
speed with a flat tire will cause excessive
heat build-up and possibly a fire.
