The research results in relation to the
best protection for children is illus-
trated in European standard ECE-
R44 which divides the restraint sys-
tems into five groups in addition to
making their use compulsory:
Group 0 - up to 10 kg in weight
Group 0+ - up to 13 kg in weight
Group 1 9-18 kg in weight
Group 2 15-25 kg in weight
Group 3 22-36 kg in weight
As it may be noted, the groups over-
lap partly and, in fact, in commerce it
is possible to find devices that cover
more than one weight group.
All restraint devices must bear the
type-approval data along with the
control mark on a label that must be
firmly secured to the child seat and
must never be removed.
Over 1.50 m in height, from the point
of view of restraint systems, children
are considered as adults and must
wear the seat belts normally.
Lineaccessori Lancia includes child
seats for each weight group. These de-
vices are recommended having been
specifically designed for Lancia cars.
SEVERE DANGER: do not
arrange child seats on the
front seat facing backwards if the
passenger’s front airbag is enabled.
Deployment of the airbag in the
event of an accident could cause fa-
tal injuries to the baby. It is advis-
able to carry children on the back
seat, which is the most protected
position in the event of an accident.
Under no circumstances should
child seats be fitted on the front
seat if the car is equipped with an
airbag on the passenger side, be-
cause if the airbag is deployed, it
may cause fatal injuries to the
baby regardless of the severity of
the crash causing the deployment.
WARNING
On cars supplied with a
deactivation system for
the front passenger
airbag, children can sit on
the front seat, when re-
quired. In this case, how-
ever, make sure that the airbag is
actually deactivated by checking
the amber warning light on the
panel (see the paragraph “front
airbag on passenger side” in the
section on both front and side
airbags). Move the passenger’s
seat as far back as possible to
avoid contact between the child
seat and the dashboard.

Below is a summary of the safety
rules to be followed for carrying
children:
❒The recommended position for in-
stalling the child seat is on the rear
seat, as it is the most protected
area in the event of a crash.
❒If the passenger’s air bag is deac-
tivated (where provided) always
check that the amber “warning
light on the panel is permanently
on to indicate actual airbag deac-
tivation.
❒Thoroughly follow the instructions
that must be provided by the
manufacturer with the child seat.
Keep the instructions in the car
along with the other papers and
this handbook. Do not use child
seats without instructions.
❒Pull the belt to make sure that the
seat belt is properly hooked.❒Only one child must sit on the
child seat: never let two children
sit on it simultaneously.
❒Always check that the seat belts do
not run around the child’s neck.
❒While travelling, do not let the
child sit incorrectly or release the
belts.
❒Never carry children, nor even in-
fants, on your lap. No-one, how-
ever strong, can hold a child in the
case of an accident.
❒In the event of an accident, replace
the child’s seat with a new one. ISOFIX
CHILD RESTRAINT
ASSEMBLY SETUP
Provision has been made on the car to
mount a Universal Isofix child re-
straint system, a new European stan-
dardised system for carrying children
safely.
Isofix systems can be mounted simul-
taneously with a traditional restraint
system.
An example of child seat is shown in
fig. 14.
The Universal Isofix child seat covers
weight group: 1.
Specific Isofix child seats cover the
other weight groups. These seats must
be designed, tested and type-ap-
proved specifically for this car (refer
to the list of cars attached to the child
seat).
Do not arrange child seats
on the front seat in cars
fitted with an airbag on the pas-
senger side. Children must never
travel on the front seat.

FRONT AIRBAGS
The car is supplied with front airbags
for both the driver and passenger, and
window bags (head protection sys-
tem). On driver’s request, it can be
supplied with front side airbags.
The front airbags (for driver and pas-
senger) have been designed to protect
the passengers sitting on the front
seats in the event of head-on crashes
of medium-high severity, by placing
the bag between the person and the
steering wheel or dashboard.
Non-deployment of the airbags dur-
ing other types of collisions (side col-
lisions, rear shunts, roll-overs, etc.)
does not necessarily indicate a system
malfunction.
An electronic control unit causes the
bag to inflate in the event of a frontal
crash. The bag inflates instanta-
neously placing itself between the
front passenger’s body and the struc-
tures which could cause injury. It de-
flates immediately afterwards.
Driver and passenger front airbags are
not a replacement of, but comple-
mentary to the seat belts, which you
are always recommended to wear, as
specified by law in Europe and most
non-European countries.
In the event of a collision, a person
not wearing the seat belt may bethrown forward and come into con-
tact with the bag before it has fully
opened. The protection offered by the
bag is reduced in such a case.
Front airbags may not be activated in
the following situations:
❒during collisions against highly de-
formable objects that do not affect
the car front surface (e.g. bumper
collision against guard rail, heaps
of gravel, etc.);
❒jamming of the car underneath
other vehicles or protective barri-
ers (e.g. underneath a truck or a
guard rail); in this case, the bags
would offer no additional protec-
tion with respect to the seat belt
and their deployment is unneces-
sary. In these cases non-deploy-
ment of the airbag does not neces-
sarily indicate a system malfunc-
tion.
The front airbags on the driver’s and
passenger’s sides are designed and cal-
ibrated to protect the front seat pas-
sengers who wear the safety belts. The
volume of front airbags at max. infla-
tion fills most of the space between
the steering wheel and the driver and
between the dashboard and the pas-
senger.FRONT AIRBAG ON DRIVER’S

contained in a special recess in the
centre of the steering wheel.

FRONT AIRBAG ON
PASSENGER’S SIDE fig. 18
It consists of an instant-inflating bag
contained into a special recess Ain the
dashboard. The bag is larger in vol-
ume than the airbag on the driver’s
side. The airbags are not deployed in
the event of collisions of low severity
(for which the withholding action of
the seat belts is sufficient). For this
reason, the seat belt must be worn at
all times. During side collisions the
seat belts hold passengers in the cor-
rect position and prevent ejection
from the car during very violent col-
lisions.
Do not apply stickers/de-
cals or other objects on the
steering wheel, in area A-fig. 18 on
the passenger side airbag or side
upholstery on the roof side. Do not
place objects (e.g. cell phones) on
the passenger side dashboard, be-
cause they could interfere with cor-
rect deployment of the passenger
airbag and cause severe injury to
the persons in the car.
WARNING
SEVERE DANGER: do not
arrange child seats facing
backwards if the front airbag on
the passenger’s side is enabled.
Airbag deployment during a crash
may cause fatal injuries to the
child.
WARNING
If the car is equipped with
a deactivation system for
the front passenger
airbag, disable it when-
ever the child seat needs to
be mounted on the front
seat. Move the passenger’s seat as
far back as possible to avoid con-
tact between the child seat and the
dashboard. Although this is not
mandatory by law, the airbag
should be immediately reactivated
when children are no longer car-
ried to ensure better protection to
adults.
