Operating door locks from out-
side the vehicle
• Driver’s door can be locked and
unlocked with the key.
• Turn the key to the left to lock all doors.
• Turn the key to the right once to unlock the driver’s door and to the right twice
within 3 seconds to unlock all doors.
• Doors can also be locked and unlocked with the transmitter key.
• Once the doors are unlocked, it may be opened by pulling the door handle.
• When closing the door, push the door with your hand. Make sure that doors
are closed securely. To lock a door without the key, push the
door lock switch (
➀) to the “LOCK” posi-
tion and close the door (
➁).
✽ NOTICE
Always remove the ignition key, engage
the parking brake, close all windows
and lock all doors when leaving your
vehicle unattended.
✽NOTICE
If the door is locked/unlocked multiple
times in rapid succession with either the
vehicle key or door lock switch, the sys-
tem may stop operating temporarily in
order to protect the circuit and prevent
damage to system components.

• When pushing down on the front por-tion (
➀) of the door lock switch, all
vehicle doors will lock.
• When pushing down on the rear por- tion (
➁) of the switch, all vehicle doors
will unlock.
• However, if the key is in the ignition switch and any front door is open, the
doors will not lock by pressing the door
lock switch.
CAUTION
• The door s should always be fully
clo sed and locked while the vehi-
cle is in motion to prevent acci- dental opening of the door. Locked door s will also discour-
age potential intruder s when the
vehicle stops or slows.
• Be careful when opening door s
and watch for vehicle s, motorcy-
cle s, bicycles or pedes trians
approaching the vehicle in the path of the door. Opening a doorwhen something i s approaching
can cause damage or injury.
WARNING
Leaving your vehicle unlocked can
invite theft or possible harm to you
or other s from someone hiding in
your vehicle while you are gone.
Always remove the ignition key,
engage the parking brake, close all
windows and lock all door s when
leaving your vehicle unattended.
WARNING- Unattended children
An enclosed vehicle can become
extremely hot, caus ing death or
severe injury to unattended chil-
dren or animals who cannot e scape
the vehicle. Furthermore, children
might operate feature s of the vehi-
cle that could injure them, or they
could encounter other harm, possi-
bly from someone gaining entry to
the vehicle. Never leave children or
animals unattended in your vehicle.

Removal
To remove the headrest, raise it as far as
it can go then press the release button
(
➀) while pulling upward (➁).
Storing long/narrow cargo with trunkclo sed (if equipped)
Pull the armrest down using the strap
provided on the armrest. Pull the cover
down while pushing the release lever
down. Additional cargo space is provided
to accommodate long/narrow cargo
(skis, poles, lumber, etc.) not able to fit
properly in the trunk when closed.

CAUTION
Be careful when loading cargo through the rear passenger seats to
prevent damage to the vehicle inte- rior.
WARNING
• Make sure the engine i s off, the
transaxle is in P and the parking
brake is applied whenever load-
ing or unloading cargo. Vehicle
may move if shift lever is inadver-
tently moved to another po sition.
• When cargo is loaded through the rear passenger seats,ensure the
cargo is properly secured to pre-
vent it from moving while driving.
Unsecured cargo in the passen-
ger compartment can cause dam-
age to the vehicle or injury to it s
occupants.

✽NOTICE
 If luggage or other objects are placed
on the front passenger's seat or if the
temperature of the seat changes while
the seat is unoccupied, the "PASSEN-
GER AIR BAG OFF" indicator may
blink. These conditions do not indi-
cate a problem.
 Do not put heavy objects on the front passenger's seat. This may cause front
passenger air bag deployment in the
event of an accident, thus increasing
your repair costs.WARNING
• The front seat passenger air bag
is much larger than the steering
wheel air bag and inflate s with
considerably more force. It can
seriously hurt or kill a passenger
who is not in the proper po sition
and wearing the safety belt prop-
erly. The front pa ssengers should
always move their seats a s far
back as practical and sit back in
their seats.
• It is e ssential that the front pas-
senger always wear s their safety
belts, even when the vehicle i s
moving in a parking lot or up a
driveway into garage.
• If the driver brakes the vehicle heavily prior to an impact, unbelt-
ed occupants will be thrown for-
ward. If the front pa ssenger is not
wearing a safety belt, he/she will
be directly in front of the storage
compartment when deployment
occur s. In that situation, serious
injur

y or death i s possible.

• Do not modify or replace the frontpassenger seat. This will disable
the OCS unless a proper Kia
replacement seat is used.
• Do not place sharp objects on the
front passenger seat. These can
damage the occupant cla ssifica-
tion system, if they puncture the
seat cushion.
• Do not install accessory seat cov-
er s on the front seats, since these
will interfere with proper sensor
operation.

Automatic transaxle
When turning the ignition switch to the
LOCK position, the shift lever must be in
the P (Park) position.WARNING - Ignition key
• Never turn the ignition switch to
LOCK or ACC while the vehicle is
moving. Thi s would result in lo ss
of directional control and braking
function, which could cau se an
immediate accident.
• The anti-theft s teering column
lock is not a substitute for the
parking brake. Before leaving the
driver’ s seat, always make sure
the shift lever is engaged in P
(Park), set the parking brake fully
and shut the engine off.
Unexpected and sudden vehicle
movement may occur if these pre-
cautions are not taken.
• Never reach for the ignition switch, or any other controls
through the steering wheel while
the vehicle i s in motion. The pre s-
ence of your hand or arm in thi s
area could cause a loss of vehicle
control, an accident and serious
bodily injury or death.
• Do not put any movable thing s
around the driver’ s seat as they
can disturb your driving and may
cause accidents.

1. Make sure the parking brake isapplied.
2. Place the transaxle shift lever in P (Park). Depress the brake pedal fully.
You can also start the engine when the shift lever is in the N (Neutral)
position.
3. Turn the ignition switch to START and hold it there until the engine starts (a
maximum of 10 seconds), then
release the key.
4. In extremely cold weather (below -18°C / 0°F) or after the vehicle has
not been operated for several days, let
the engine warm up without depress-
ing the accelerator.
Whether the engine is cold or warm, itshould be started without depressing
the accelerator.
STARTING THE ENGINE
CAUTION
If the engine stalls while you are in motion, do not attempt to move the shift lever to the P (Park) po sition. If
traffic and road condition s permit,
you may put the shift lever in the N
(Neutral) position while the vehicle is still moving and turn the ignition
s witch to the START po sition in an
attempt to restart the engine.
WARNING
Always wear appropriate s hoes
when operating your vehicle.
Unsuitable shoes (high heel s,ski
boots,etc.) may interfere with your
ability to use the brake and acceler-
ator pedal.

Automatic transaxle operation
All normal forward driving is done with
the shift lever in the D (Drive) position.
To move the shift lever from the P (Park)
position, the brake pedal must be
depressed and the lock release button
must be depressed.
For smooth operation, depress the brakepedal when shifting from N (Neutral) to a forward or reverse gear.
✽ NOTICE
 To avoid damage to your transaxle, do
not accelerate the engine in R
(Reverse) or any forward gear posi-
tion with the brakes on.
 When stopped on an upgrade, do not hold the vehicle stationary with
engine power. Use the service brake
or the parking brake.
 Do not shift from N (Neutral) or P (Park) into D (Drive), or R (Reverse)
when the engine is above idle speed.
Transaxle ranges
P (park)
This position locks the transaxle and pre-
vents the front wheels from rotating.
Always come to a complete stop before
shifting into this position.
WARNING- Automatic
transaxle
Before leaving the driver’ s seat,
always make sure the shift lever is
in the P (PARK) position; then set
the parking brake fully and shut the
engine off. Unexpected and sudden
vehicle movement can occur if
these precaution s are not followed
in the order identified.
WARNING
• Shifting into P (Park) while the vehicle is in motion will cause the
drive wheel s to lock which will
cause you to lose control of the
vehicle.
• Do not use the P (Park) po sition
in place of the parking brake.
Always make sure the shift lever
is latched in the P (Park) po sition
so that it cannot be moved unle ss
the lock release button is pushed
in, AND set the parking brake
fully.
