when the fuel tank is approaching empty.
When it comes on, you should add fuel as

Malfunction Indicator Light
This light illuminates when there is a
malfunction of an exhaust gas related
component and the system is not func-
tioning properly. This light will also illumi-
nate when the ignition key is turned to the
"ON" position, and will go out in a few
seconds after the engine is started. If it
illuminates while driving, or does not illumi-
nate when the ignition key is turned to the
"ON" position, take your car to your nearest
authorized Hyundai dealer and have the
system checked.
!
CAUTION:
Prolonged driving with the Emission
Control System Malfunction Indicator
Light illuminated may cause damage to
the emission control systems which
could effect drivability or fuel economy.
If the Emission Control System Malfunc-
tion Indicator Light begins to flash ON
and OFF, potential catalytic converter
damage is possible which could result in
loss of engine power. Have the Engine
Control System inspected as soon as
possible by an authorized Hyundai
dealer. The driver's seat belt warning light and
chime will activate to the following table
when the ignition switch is in "ON" posi-
tion.

32WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY
IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT
START!
D010B02A-AATIf Engine Doesn't Turn Over or Turns
Over Slowly
D010A01A-AATD010C01A-AAT
If Engine Turns Over Normally but
Does Not Start1. Check fuel level.
2. With the key in the "OFF" position,
check all connectors at ignition coil
and spark plugs. Reconnect any that
may be disconnected or loose.
3. Check the fuel line in the engine room.
4. If the engine still refuses to start, call a
Hyundai dealer or seek other qualified
assistance. WARNING:
If the engine will not start, do not push
or pull the car to start it. This could
result in a collision or cause other dam-
age. In addition, push or pull starting
may cause the catalytic converter to
be overloaded and create a fire hazard.
1. If your car has an automatic transaxle,
be sure the gear selector lever is in "N"
or "P" and the emergency brake is set.
2. Check the battery connections to be
sure they are clean and tight.
3. Turn on the interior light. If the light
dims or goes out when you operate the
starter, the battery is discharged.
4. Check the starter connections to be
sure they are securely tightened.
5. Do not push or pull the vehicle to start
it. See instructions for "Jump Starting".

CATALYTIC CONVERTER
!
!
H020A01A-AATAll Hyundai vehicles are equipped with a
monolith type three-way catalytic con-
verter to reduce the carbon monoxide,
hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides con-
tained in the exhaust gas. Exhaust gases
passing through the catalytic converter
cause it to operate at a very high tem-
perature. The introduction of large
amounts of unburned gasoline into the
exhaust may cause the catalytic converter
to overheat and create a fire hazard. This
risk may be reduced by observing the
following:WARNING:
o Do not touch the catalytic converter
or any other part of the exhaust sys-
tem while the catalytic converter is
hot. Shut off the engine, wait for at
least one hour before touching the
catalytic converter or any other part
of the exhaust system.
o Remember that your Hyundai dealer
is your best source of assistance.
o Do not stop your Hyundai over any
combustible material such as grass,
paper, leaves or rags. These materi-
als might contact the hot catalytic
converter and a fire might result.

Catalytic Converter
WARNING:
o Use unleaded fuel only.
o Maintain the engine in good operat-
ing condition. Extremely high cata-
lytic converter temperatures can re-
sult from improper operation of the
electrical, ignition or multiport elec-
tronic fuel injection.
o If your engine stalls, pings, knocks,
or is hard to start, have your Hyundai
dealer inspect and repair the prob-
lem as soon as possible.
o Avoid driving with a very low fuel
level. Running out of gasoline may
cause the engine to misfire and re-
sult in damage to the catalytic con-
verter.
o Avoid idling the engine for periods
longer than 10 minutes.
o The vehicle should not be pushed or
pulled to get started. This may cause
the catalytic converter to overheat
and create a fire hazard.
