Cold/hot engine
WARNING
At temperatures below -20 ºC,turn the ignition key to positionII for at least one second. Thisensures that maximum fuel pressureis established.
Depress the clutch pedal fully andstart the engine without touching theaccelerator.
If the engine does not start within 15seconds, wait for a short period andrepeat the procedure.
If the engine does not start afterthree attempts wait 10 seconds andfollow the Flooded engineprocedure.
If starting difficulty is experienced attemperatures below -25ºC, depressthe accelerator pedal ¼ to ½ of itstravel to assist starting.
Flooded engine
Depress the clutch pedal fully.
Slowly depress the accelerator fully,hold it in this position and start theengine.
If the engine does not start repeatthe Cold/hot engine procedure.
Vehicles with a Flexfuelengine
Starting at low ambienttemperatures
When the temperature is expectedto be lower than -15°C and thevehicle is filled with bio ethanol E 85,an engine block heater should beused to facilitate starting.
If the temperature is expected toremain below -15°C, it isrecommended that you increase theproportion of petrol in the tank bytopping up with 95 octane unleadedpetrol if the tank is not already full.About 10 litres of petrol will reducethe proportion of bio ethanol E 85 ina ¾ full tank from 85% to 70%.
If, at very low temperatures, the tankis filled with only bio ethanol E 85 andthere is no way to use an engineblock heater, you may experiencedifficulties starting the engine.
If the engine fails to start, proceed asfollows:
1.Depress the accelerator pedal 1/3to ½ of its travel.
2.Turn the ignition key to positionIII.
3.Release the ignition key as soonas the engine has started andrelease the accelerator pedalgradually as the engine speedincreases.
4.If the engine fails to start, depressthe accelerator pedal fully andrepeat steps 2 and 3.

If the battery has been disconnectedor after the fuel type has beenchanged, the idle speed may beirregular. This will improve after 10 to30 seconds.

Once the system recognizes apassive key, the engine can bestarted. If no passive key is detected,PASSIVE KEY NOT DETECTEDwill appear in the information display.
STARTING A DIESEL
ENGINE
Cold/hot engine
Depress the clutch pedal withouttouching the accelerator.
Turn the key to position IIand ensure the glow plugindicator lamp illuminates.
Wait until the lamp extinguishesbefore starting and continue crankingwithout pausing until the enginestarts.
If the engine stalls, repeat the fullstarting procedure.

The passive starting system will notfunction if:
•The passive key frequencies arejammed.
•The passive key battery is flat.
If you are unable to start your vehiclecarry out the following procedure.
Type 1
1.Hold the key next to the steeringcolumn shroud exactly as shown.
2.With the key in this position youcan use the start button to switchthe ignition on and start yourvehicle.
Type 2
1.Carefully prise out the cover.
2.Insert the key into the key holder.
3.With the key in this position youcan use the start button to switchthe ignition on and start yourvehicle.

When your vehicle is stationary, pressthe start button to stop the engine.The ignition, all electrical circuits,warning lamps and indicators will beswitched off.
SWITCHING OFF THE
ENGINE
Vehicles with aturbocharger
CAUTION
Do not switch the engine offwhen it is running at high speed.If you do, the turbocharger willcontinue running after the engine oilpressure has dropped to zero. Thiswill lead to premature turbochargerbearing wear.
Release the accelerator pedal. Waituntil the engine has reached idlespeed and then switch it off.
ENGINE HEATER
CAUTION
Make sure you disconnect thepower cable from the engineheater connector before drivingaway.
Note:Only use the engine heater intemperatures below -10°C (14°F).
Note:The engine heater connectoris located in the radiator grille at thefront of your vehicle.
Connect the engine heater for 2 to3 hours before starting the engine.

Stop refuelling after the fuelnozzle stops the second time.Additional fuel will fill the expansionspace in the fuel tank which couldlead to fuel overflowing. Fuel spillagecould be hazardous to other roadusers.
Do not use any kind of flamesor heat near the fuel system.The fuel system is under pressure.There is a risk of injury if the fuelsystem is leaking.
FUEL QUALITY - PETROL
Note:We recommend that you useonly high quality fuel without additivesor other engine treatments.
CAUTION
Do not use leaded petrol orpetrol with additives containingother metallic compounds (e.g.manganese-based). They coulddamage the emission system.
Use minimum 95 octaneunleaded petrol that meets thespecification defined by EN 228, orequivalent.
FUEL QUALITY -
FLEXIBLE FUEL
WARNINGS
Do not modify the fuel systemconfiguration or thecomponents in the system.
Do not replace the fuel systemor the components with partsnot specially designed to be usedwith bio ethanol.
CAUTIONS
Do not use leaded petrol orpetrol with additives containingother metallic compounds (e.g.manganese-based). They coulddamage the emission system.
Do not use methanol instead ofbio ethanol E 85

Long-term storage
Due to small amounts of corrosiveimpurities that may be found in thebio ethanol E 85, it is recommendedthat you fill the tank with only 95octane unleaded petrol prior tolong-term storage of your vehicle.
FUEL QUALITY - DIESEL
Note:We recommend that you useonly high quality fuel without additivesor other engine treatments.
WARNING
Do not mix diesel with oil, petrolor other liquids. This could causea chemical reaction.
CAUTION
Do not add kerosene, paraffin orpetrol to diesel. This could causedamage to the fuel system.
Note:We do not recommend theprolonged use of additives intendedto prevent fuel waxing.
Use diesel that meets thespecification defined by EN 590, orequivalent.
You can use diesel that contains upto 5% RME (bio diesel).
CATALYTIC CONVERTER

CAUTIONS
Avoid running out of fuel.
Do not crank the engine for longperiods.
Do not run the engine when aspark plug lead is disconnected.
Do not push-start or tow-startyour vehicle. Use booster cables.See Using booster cables (page209).
Do not switch the ignition offwhen driving.
Parking
WARNING
Do not park your vehicle overdry leaves or dry grass. Theexhaust will continue to radiate aconsiderable amount of heat afteryou have switched the engine off.This is a potential fire hazard.
