Vehicles without steering wheel but-
tons:
There is a malfunction if the
k
indi-
cator lamp is permanently lit while the
engine is running (
\2
page 73).ESP
® monitors driving stability and de-
tects a tendency of the vehicle to under-
steer or oversteer (skidding) in good
time. ESP
® stabilizes the vehicle by
braking individual wheels, limiting the
engine power output, and greatly assists
y o u w h e n d r i v i n g o n w e t o r s l i p p e r y r o a d
surfaces. ESP
® also stabilizes the vehi-
cle when braking.
When ESP
® intervenes, the
v
warn-
ing lamp in the speedometer flashes.
Warning
G
If BAS malfunctions, the brake system is
still available with the full brake boosting
effect. In an emergency braking situation,
however, the braking force will not be ad-
ditionally boosted automatically and the
stopping distance may increase.
Electronic Stability Program
(ESP
®)
Warning
G
Proceed as follows if the v warning
lamp in the speedometer flashes:
\4Do not deactivate ASR under any cir-
cumstances.
\4Only depress the accelerator pedal as
far as necessary when pulling away.
\4Adapt your driving style to suit the
prevailing road and weather condi-
tions.
Otherwise, the vehicle could begin to
skid.
ESP
® cannot reduce the risk of an acci-
dent if you drive too fast. ESP
® is unable
to override the laws of physics.

If the road surface is not capable of pro-
viding sufficient traction, bearing in
mind the tires, load and gradient, it is
not be possible to pull away smoothly
even with ASR.
Vehicles without steering wheel but-
tons:
There is a malfunction if the
k
indi-
cator lamp is permanently lit while the
engine is running (
\2
page 73).
If ASR malfunctions, engine power out-
put may be reduced.
Activating/deactivating ASRASR is automatically activated as soon
as the engine is switched on.
It may be best to deactivate ASR in the
following situations:\4
if snow chains are being used
\4
in deep snow
\4
on sand or gravelIf you deactivate ASR:
\4
the engine’s torque is then no longer
limited and the drive wheels could
spin; the spinning wheels produce a
cutting effect for better traction
\4
traction control still intervenes by
braking if one drive wheel reaches its
grip limit, for example if the surface
under one side of the vehicle is slip-
pery. The wheel is then braked to in-
crease traction in this situation.
\4
ESP
® still intervenes to stabilize the
vehicle

On vehicles with a battery isolating
switch, you must first switch on the
electrical system (\2

Overrun cut-off
The gasoline/diesel supply is cut off if
the driver's foot is completely removed
from the accelerator pedal when the en-
gine is overrunning at engine speeds
outside of the idling control range.
General driving tipsWarning
G
Drinking and driving and/or taking drugs
and driving are very dangerous combina-
tions. Even a small amount of alcohol or
drugs can affect your reflexes, percep-
tions and judgment. The possibility of a
serious or even fatal accident is sharply
increased when you drink or take drugs
and drive.
Never drink or take drugs and drive or al-
low anyone to drive after drinking or tak-
ing drugs.
Warning
G
There is no power-steering assistance
when the engine is not running.
You will need to use significantly more
force to steer and could therefore lose
control of the vehicle and cause an acci-
dent.
Never switch off the engine while driving.
!
CAUTION
Do not hold the steering wheel in its
end positions for longer than neces-
sary (e.g. when turning or maneuver-
ing).
The hydraulic pump can be damaged
by the increased temperature of the
hydraulic fluid.

The selector lever position engaged or
the current shift range is shown in the
display. Display on vehicles with steer-
ing wheel buttons* (

page 151) and on
vehicles without steering wheel buttons
(
\2
page 147).
When the selector lever is in position
D,
you can influence the gearshifts made
by the automatic transmission by:
\4
restricting the shift range
\4
changing gear yourself
Selector lever positionsì
Parking lock
Prevents the parked vehicle
from rolling away. Only move
the selector lever to
P when
the vehicle is stationary.
You can only remove the key
when the selector lever is in
position
P. The selector lever
is locked in position
P when
the key is removed.
í
Reverse gear
Only move the selector lever
to
R when the vehicle is sta-
tionary.
ë
NeutralNo power is transmitted from
the engine to the drive
wheels. Releasing the brakes
will allow you to move the ve-
hicle freely, e.g. by pushing or
towing.Do not move the selector le-
ver to
N while the vehicle is in
motion. The automatic trans-
mission could otherwise be
damaged.

Towing
5
\3 Towing
Comply with legal regulations when tow-
ing.Having the vehicle carried away on a
transporter or trailer is preferable to
towing it away. We recommend the use
of a rigid towing bar if towing is neces-
sary.
The fixture for the front towing eye is lo-
cated behind the cover in the bumper on
the right-hand side when viewed in the
direction of travel.
Warning
G
Tow the vehicle using a rigid towing bar if:the engine is not running, there is a malfunction in the power supply
or the vehicle’s electrical system. There is no power assistance for the
steering and braking when the engine is
not running. You must then use signifi-
cantly greater force to steer the vehicle
and brake.
Continued
Warning (Continued)
G
Do not tow the vehicle if the key cannot
be turned in the ignition lock. The steering
is then locked and it will not be possible
to steer the vehicle. When towing another vehicle, its weight
should not be greater than the permissi-
ble gross weight of your vehicle.

eye
