Towing hitch
For vehicles with a trailer hitch installed according to factory speci
fications, the rear acoustic parking sensors are not activated when
the vehicle is put in reverse gear while an electrical connection to
the trailer socket* is established . No distance alert occurs in the rear
=> page 170. The rear -view camera picture => page 173 is displayed
without orientation lines and without blue surfaces. •

Adjusting the chimes -option 1
The volume and the pitch (frequency) of the chimes can
be adjusted in the MM/.

• The rear-view camera generates two -dimensional images . For
this reason, please note that recesses in the ground and
protruding parts on another vehicle, or protruding objects fixed to
the ground, will be more difficult or impossible to recognize on the
MMI Display, due to the missing spacial depth.
• If the position and the installation angle of the camera has
changed, for example, after a rear end collision, do not continue to
use the system for safety reasons. Have it checked by an autho
rized Audi dealer or qualified workshop.
• Only use the rear-view camera when the rear lid is fully closed.
Make sure that objects mounted on the rear are not obscuring the
camera view .

Adaptive Air Suspension and
Damping
Description
Adaptive Air Suspension and damping can be regulated
and they adapt automatically to a request from the driver
and the driving situation at the time.
Adaptive Air Suspension is an electronica lly contro lled springing
and damping system. T his chassis system makes it eas ier on the
driver by adapting to the particu lar situation through imperceptible
control processes.
The
Ad apti ve Air Suspen sion component regu lates ground c lear
ance depending on vehicle speed, load condition and driver input .
Acce lerat ing to a speed above a predetermined limit wil l make the
vehic le lower i tself. On the other hand, driving more slowly results
in the vehic le rais ing again at specific speeds .
T he
d amp in g component provides individual contro l of the
damping forces. For examp le, with damping characteristics set to
provide greater comfort, damping is set somewhat harder for a brief
period only as required, for example, when going around a curve or
over rough road surfaces as well as when brak ing.
S ett ing s
Adaptive Air Suspension provides the driver with the opportunity to
set the chassis characteristics a lso to their individua l preference .
With the driving modes
standard, automatic and dynamic the driver
has three chassis settings availab le, ranging from comfort to sporty.
In addition,
lift provides a fourth mode wh ich can be selecting for
driving over poor stretches of
road~ page 186, "Chassis Contro ls" .

Controls and equip ment
On vehicles equipped with the sport su sp en sion Adaptive Air
Suspension -Sport *, there is genera lly more emphasis on a sporty
chassis sett ing. Settings range from comfortable to firm
~ page 187, "Sport Chassis Contro ls".

• Whenever you park your vehicle, always make sure there is
adequate c learance above and be low the vehicle . The height of the
parked vehicle can change as the result of temperature fluctuations,
changes in l oad condition and c hanges in the driv ing m ode (ground
c learance).
• Mount the tie -down cha ins/cab les over the running surface
(circumference) of the tires . Never secure the vehicle by the axle, the
suspens ion stru ts or the front or rear towline eye . For tec hn ica l
reasons , the pressure in the suspension struts may change during
the transport and this wil l adversely affect vehicle handling.
• To prevent damage to the vehic le underbody, remember that
your vehicle is not a n off -road vehicle, even in the lift mode . The
ground clearance is insufficient for this type of operation .
• If you are going to tow a tra iler, you mus t activate the trailer oper
ation

Restrictions when Operating with a Trailer
When operating with a trailer, the lift mode can on ly be se lected up
to about 25 mph (40 km/h). The system automatical ly goes out of lift
mode when speed exceeds about 31 mph (50 km/h).
I f the vehic le is in automatic, standard or lift mode before the trai ler
towing mode is activated, the dynamic mode cannot be activated ·
except on vehicles with
sport suspension Adaptive Air Suspension -
Sport*.
If the vehic le is in dynamic mode before towing operation is acti·
vated, it can be driven in this mode. If the suspension is shifted from
this mode to automatic mode, dynamic mode cannot be
re-selected .~

Driving with a trailer
General information
Your Audi was designed primarily for passenger transpor
tation.
If you plan to tow a trailer, please remember that the add it ional load
wi ll affect durability, economy and performance.
Tra iler towing not on ly p laces more stress on the vehicle, it a lso ca lls
for more concentration from the driver.
For this reason, always fol low the ope rating and driv ing instruc tions
provided and use common sense.

tion
mode => page 189, "Towing a Trailer". •
Technical requirements
Traile r hit ch
Use a we ight-carrying hitch conforming to the gross trai ler weight.
The hitch must be suitable for your vehic le and trailer and must be
mounted secure ly on the ve hicle's chass is at a
technically sound
location. Use only a trailer hitch with a removable ball mount.
Always check wit h the trai ler hitch manufacturer to make s ure that
you are using the correct hitch .
Do not use a bumper hit ch.
The hitc h must be installed in such a way t hat it does not interfere
with the impact-absorbing bumper system. No modifications
should be made to the veh ic le exhaust a nd brake systems. F rom time to time, check that all hitch mounting bolts remain secure
ly
fastened .
When yo u are no t towing a trailer, re move the tra ile r hitch ball
mount. This prevents the hitch from causing damage shou ld your
vehic le be struck from

Traile r br ake s
If your tra iler is equipped with a braking syste m, check to be sure
that it conforms to al l regu lations .
The tra iler hydraul ic brake sys tem must not be di rect ly co nnected to
t he vehic le's hydrau lic brake system .
Safety chains
Always use safety chains between your vehicle and the trailer.
Trailer light s
Trai ler lights must meet a ll regulations. Be sure to check with your
Aud i dea ler for correc t wir ing, sw itch es and relays .
Mirrors
If you are unable to see the traf fic behind you using the regu lar
outside mirrors, then you
must instal l extended mirrors. It is impor
t ant that you
always have c lear v ision to the rear.

After removing the tr ailer hitch , do not store it in your vehi cle . In
ca se of sudden braking , the hitch could fl y forward and injure you

trailer.

Engin e coo lin g sys te m
Tow ing a trai ler makes the engine work harder. It is important that
the cooling system's performance is up to the additiona l load. Make
sure that the coo ling system has enough fluid .
Tire press ure
When towing a trailer, inflate the tires of your veh icle to t he co ld tire
pressure listed under "Full load" on the labe l located either on the
driver's side B -pil lar (visible when the door is open) or inside the fuel
filler flap . Inflate trailer tires to trai ler and tire manufacturers' spec
ifications.
L ig ht s
The head light settings should be checked wit h the trai ler attached
before driving off. Check to make sure both vehicle and trai ler lights
are working properly .
Safe ty c ha in s
Be s ure trailer safe ty chains are properly connected from the trailer
to the hitch on the vehicle. Leave enough slack in the chains to
permit turning corners . When yo u insta ll safety chains, make sure
they will not drag on the road when you are driving.
T he chains should cross under the trailer tongue to prevent it from
dropping in case of separat ion from the hitch.

Driving instructions
Driving with a trailer always requires extra care and
consideration.
To obtain the best possib le handling of ve hicle and trailer,
p lease note t he following :
- Do not tow a loaded trailer when your car itself is not
loaded.
- Be especia lly careful whe n passing other vehic les .
- Observe speed limits .
- Do not drive at the maximum permiss ible speed .
- Always apply brakes early.
- Monitor t he temperature ga uge .
W eight d istr ibu tion
Towing a loaded trailer with an empty car results in a highly
unstable d istribution of weight. If this cannot be avoided, drive at
very low speeds only to avoid the risk of losing steering control.
A "balanced" rig is easier to operate and control. This means that
t he tow vehicle should be loaded to the extent possible and permis
sib le, while keeping the trailer as light as possib le under the circum
stances . Whenever possible, transfer some cargo to the luggage
compartment of the tow vehicle whi le observing tongue load
requirements and vehicle loading considera tions .

Speed
The higher the speed, the more difficu lt it becomes for the driver to
control the rig. Do not drive at the maximum permissible speed. Reduce your speed even more if load, weather or wind conditions
are unfavorable
-particularly when going downhi ll.
Reduce vehicle speed
i mm edia te ly if the trailer shows the slightest
sign of swaying.
Do not try t o stop the sway ing by accelerating.
Observe speed lim its. In some areas, speeds for vehicles towing
trai lers are lower than for regular ve hicles .
Always apply brakes ear ly. When driving down hill, shift into a lower
gear to use the engine braking effect to slow the vehicle. Use of the
brakes a lone can cause them to overheat and fail.
Cool ant temp era tu re
The coolant temperature gauge=> page 12 must be observed care
ful ly. If the needle moves close to the upper end of the scale, reduce
speed immed iately and/or turn off the air conditioner.
If the coolant temperature warning light in the instrument cluster
starts flas hing
-F- , pul l off the road, stop and let t he engine idle for
about two m inutes to prevent heat build-up.

Trailer towing tips
Important to know
Your vehicle handles differently when towing a trailer because of
the additional weight and different weight distribution. Safety, performance and economy wi
ll greatly depend on how carefully you
l oad your trailer and opera te your r ig.
Before you actual ly tow your trailer, practice turn ing, stopping and
backing up in an area away from traffic . Keep practicing unti l you
have become comp letely fam iliar with the way your vehicle-trai ler
combination behaves and responds.
Backing up is di fficult and requires practice. Backing up with a
trai ler generally requires steering action opposite to that when
backing up your veh ic le without a tra iler.
Ma inta in a greater distance between your veh ic le and the one in
front of you . You will need more room to stop. To compensate for
the trai ler, you w ill need a larger than norma l turning radius.
When passing, remember that you cannot accelerate as fast as you n or mally wou ld because of t he added load . Make su re you have
enough room to pass . After passing, al low plenty of room for your
t rai ler befo re changing lanes again .
Avo id jerky starts, sharp turns or rapid lane changes.

Parking on a slope
Do n ot park on a slope with a trailer. If it cannot be

• The brakes on a vehicle that has been overloaded may not be
able to stop the vehi cle within a safe distance .
• Tires on a vehicle that has been overloaded can fail suddenly
c au sing lo ss of control and a cra sh.
• Always make sure that the total load being transported -
including the we ight of a trailer hitch and the tongue weight of a
loaded trailer -does not make the vehicle heavier than the
v ehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating .

• Incorrect tire pressures and /or underinflation can lead to a
serious or fatal accident.
• Incorre ct tire pressures and /or underinflation cause in creased
tire wear and can affect the handling of the vehicle .
• Incorrect tire pressures and /or underinflation can also lead to
sudden tire failure, including a blowout and sudden deflation,
c ausing loss of vehi cle control.

Checking tire pressure
The c orrect tire pressu re f or the tires ori gina lly installe d
on your vehicle is lis ted on the ti re pressure la bel loca ted
either on driver's side 8-pillar or inside the fuel filler flap.

not been driven for more than a couple of miles (kilometers) at low

M ost tires lose a ir natu rally ove r ti m e. T hey can a lso lose so me air if
you drive ov er a pothole or h it a curb while parkin g. It is usually not
pos sible to see whe the r the rad ial tir es use d today are unde rin flated
just by look in g at t hem .
T herefore, be sure to chec k tire pressures at least once a month and
a lways be fore go ing o n a lo ng trip . Make su re to take the nu mber o f
people and the amount of luggage into account when ad justing tire
pr ess u re fo r a trip -even one t hat you wou ld not conside r to be
" long ."

A lways use a n accu rate ti re p ressure gauge w hen c hec kin g a nd
adjusting inflation pressures . Chec k all of the tires and be sure not
t o fo rget t he spare t ire . If the pressu re i n an y tire is too high when
the tire is "co ld," let air out of the tire slow ly with the edge of the tire
ga uge and kee p checking the press ure u ntil y ou r each th e pr essu re
that is correct for the load (passengers and luggage) and kind of
d riv in g yo u plan to do .
I f the pressure in any tire is too low, note the difference between the
pressure in the cold tire and the pressure you need and add the air
t hat you need to r each the correct pressure for the veh ic le load
(passengers and luggage) for the tires on your vehicle as listed on
t he o n you r vehicl e and i n thi s m anua l a n d t he kind of driving yo u
p lan to do.
Never exceed the maximum inflation pressure listed on the tire
sidewall for any reason .
Remember that the vehic le manufacturer, not the tire manufacturer,
deter mines the correc t tire pressure for the ti res on your vehicle.
