BRAKING ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS

Anti-lock braking system

Activation
The anti-lock braking system comes
i n t o o p e r a t i o n a u t o m a t i c a l l y w h e n
there is a risk of wheel lock.
N o r m a l o p e r a t i o n o f t h e A B S m a y
make itself felt by slight vibration of
t h e b r a k e p e d a l . Operating fault
When braking in an emergency,
p r e s s v e r y fi r m l y w i t h o u t r e l e a s i n g
t h e p r e s s u r e . If this warning light comes
o n , a c c o m p a n i e d b y a n a u -
dible signal and a message
o n t h e i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l d i s -
p l a y , i t i n d i c a t e s a m a l f u n c t i o n o f t h e
anti-lock braking system which could
result in loss of control of the vehicle
when braking.
If this warning light comes
on, together with the STOP
and ABS warning lights, ac-
c o m p a n i e d b y a n a u d i b l e
signal and a message on the instru-
m e n t p a n e l d i s p l a y , i t i n d i c a t e s a
malfunction of the electronic brake
force distribution which could result
in loss of control of the vehicle when
braking.
You MUST stop as soon as it is
safe to do so.
In both cases, contact a CITROËN
dealer.
W h e n r e p l a c i n g w h e e l s ( t y r e s a n d
rims), ensure that they conform to
the manufacturer's recommenda-
tions. Emergency braking assistance
System which, in an emergency,
e n a b l e s y o u t o o b t a i n t h e o p t i m u m
b r a k i n g p r e s s u r e m o r e q u i c k l y , t h u s
r e d u c i n g t h e s t o p p i n g d i s t a n c e .
Activation
I t i s t r i g g e r e d b y t h e s p e e d a t w h i c h

The effect of this is a reduction in
t h e r e s i s t a n c e o f t h e p e d a l a n d a n

TRAJECTORY CONTROL SYSTEMS
Anti-skid regulation (ASR) and
electronic stability programme
(ESP)
T h e a n t i - s k i d r e g u l a t i o n o p t i m i s e s
t r a c t i o n t o p r e v e n t s k i d d i n g o f t h e
wheels, by acting on the brakes of the
driving wheels and on the engine.
T h e e l e c t r o n i c s t a b i l i t y p r o g r a m m e
acts on the brake of one or more
w h e e l s a n d o n t h e e n g i n e t o k e e p
the vehicle on the trajectory required
by the driver. Activation
These systems are activated auto-
matically each time the vehicle is
started.
T h e y c o m e i n t o o p e r a t i o n i n t h e e v e n t
o f a g r i p o r t r a j e c t o r y p r o b l e m . T h i s i s i n d i c a t e d b y fl a s h i n g
of this warning light on the
i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l . Disarming
I n e x c e p t i o n a l c o n d i t i o n s ( s t a r t i n g a
vehicle which is bogged down, stuck
in snow, on soft ground...), it may
be advisable to disarm the ASR and
ESP systems, so that the wheels
c a n m o v e f r e e l y a n d r e g a i n g r i p .
Press the "ESP OFF" button, lo-
cated in the centre of the fascia.
If this warning light comes
o n o n t h e i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l
and the indicator light on the
button comes on, this indi-
cates that the ASR and ESP
systems are disarmed.
Snow driving assistance
(SNOW MOTION)

This automatic system continuously
c h e c k s f o r s i t u a t i o n s o f d i f fi c u l t s u r -
face adhesion that could make it dif-
fi c u l t t o m o v e o f f o r m a k e p r o g r e s s
o n d e e p f r e s h s n o w o r c o m p a c t e d
snow.
In these situations, the SNOW
MOTION system takes over from
the ASR s y s t e m b y o p t i m i s i n g t h e
a m o u n t o f w h e e l s l i p t o p r o v i d e t h e
best traction and trajectory control,
even without snow tyres and with or
without chains. For vehicles with Hydractive III+
s u s p e n s i o n , m a n u a l a d j u s t m e n t o f
ground clearance to the intermediate
p o s i t i o n i m p r o v e s f u r t h e r t h e a b i l i t y
t o m a k e p r o g r e s s i n d e e p s n o w ( s e e
t h e r e l e v a n t p a r a g r a p h ) .
I n e x t r e m e l y s e v e r e c o n d i t i o n s ( s n o w
o n t o p o f i c e , s a n d , d e e p m u d … ) , i t
can be useful to deactivate the
ESP/
ASR systems to allow a degree of
w h e e l s p i n a n d s o r e c o v e r g r i p .

MANUAL PARKING BRAKE
Mechanical device for immobilising
the vehicle when stationary. This warning lamp comes
on if the parking brake is en-
gaged or not fully released.
If the parking brake is released,
the lighting of this warning lamp
along with the STOP warning lamp
i n d i c a t e s a n i n s u f fi c i e n t l e v e l o f
b r a k e fl u i d o r a m a l f u n c t i o n o f t h e
braking distribution.
It is essential to stop the vehicle.
Consult a CITROËN dealer.
Application
Pull the parking brake to immobi-
lise your vehicle.
To facilitate the action on the lever,
you are recommended to press the
brake pedal at the same time.
In all circumstances, as a
precautionary measure,
e n g a g e fi r s t g e a r .
On steep gradients, turn the steer-
ing wheel towards the pavement. Release
Press on the end of the lever
whilst pulling it then lower it fully.

ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE
The electronic parking brake com-
bines 2 operational modes:
- AUTOMATIC
Automatic application when the engine stops and automatic re-
lease on use of the accelerator
(automatic operation by default),
- MANUAL
Permanent manual application/ release of the parking brake is
possible by pulling control A
while pressing the brake pedal. Automatic operation
Application with the engine off
With the vehicle stationary, the park-
ing brake
is automatically applied
when the engine is switched off.

With the engine running and the ve-
hicle stationary, in order to immobi-
lise the vehicle you need to manually
apply the parking brake by
pulling
on control A .

Before leaving the vehicle,
check that warning lamp P
on the instrument panel is
permanently lit.
Never leave a child alone inside the
vehicle with the ignition on, as they
could release the parking brake.

when you press the accelerator:
with a manual gearbox ( fi r s t
gear or reverse gear engaged),
press down fully on the clutch
pedal then press on the accel-
erator pedal and move off.
with an automatic gearbox , ac-
celerate with the selector in posi-
tion D , M or R .
Full release of the parking brake is
c o n fi r m e d b y : - the extinction of warning lamp P on control A and
on the instrument panel,
- the display of a message "park- ing brake released" on the instru-
ment panel display.
When stationary, with the engine
running, do not press the accelera-
tor pedal unnecessarily (particularly
when starting the engine, including
in neutral), as you may release the
parking brake. Activation/Deactivation of the
automatic functions
The automatic application when the
engine is switched off and the au-
tomatic release when you press
the accelerator can be deactivated.
Activation/deactivation is performed
u s i n g t h e c o n fi g u r a t i o n m e n u o f t h e
instrument panel display. To do so,

Dynamic emergency braking
In the event of a failure of the vehi-
cle’s main braking system or in an
exceptional situation (e.g. driver tak-
en ill, under instruction, etc) pull and
hold control A to stop the vehicle.
The electronic stability programme
(ESP) provides stability during dy-
namic emergency braking.
If the dynamic emergency braking
malfunctions, one of the following
messages will be displayed on the
instrument panel display:
- "Parking brake faulty".
- "Parking brake control faulty". If a failure of the ESP sys-
tem is signalled by the light-
ing of this warning lamp,
then braking stability is not
guaranteed. In this event, stability
must be assured by the driver by
repeating alternate "pull release" ac-
tions on control A .
The dynamic emergency
braking must only be used
in exceptional circum-
stances. Emergency unlocking
In the event of the electronic parking
brake malfunctioning or the battery
r u n n i n g fl a t , a n e m e r g e n c y m a n -
ual device can unlock the parking
brake.
Immobilise the vehicle, with the
e n g i n e r u n n i n g , b y e n g a g i n g fi r s t
gear (manual gearbox) or posi-
tion P (automatic gearbox), then
switch off the engine.
If it is impossible to immobilise the vehicle, do not action the
control and urgently contact a
CITROËN dealer.
