Volvo recommends that you always drive on tires of the same brand, size,\
construction (radial), tread
pattern, load-, speed-, traction- , temperature-, and treadwear rating. \
Never drive on mixed tires, except
for brief periods when the temporary spare tire is in use.
Always use properly inflated tires of correct dimensions. Tire size and \
inflation pressures are shown on
the tire inflation pressure placards, located on the driver's side B-pil\
lar (the structural member at the side
of the vehicle, at the rear of the driver's door opening), or on the in\
side of the fuel filler door on
Canadian models.
Temporary Spare
The temporary spare tire is for temporary, low-speed, short-distance use\
only. Replace it with a full-
sized tire as soon as possible. Do not drive on the temporary spare at s\
peeds above 50 mph (80km/h) or
for distances greater than 50 miles (80 km).
Never install snow chains on a temporary spare.

Four-C active chassis system
Four-C active chassis
The FOUR-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) active chassis sy\
stem, consisting of Comfort
and Sport modes, is available as an option.
NOTE: The V70 R has a standard FOUR-C system consisting of Comfort, Sport, an\
d Advanced sport
modes. The buttons for controlling these driving modes are located in ce\
nter instrument panel, above the
ventilation system panel vents, see the illustration in the right column\
. These buttons can be pressed at
any time to change driving modes. An indicator light in the selected but\
ton will come on to indicate the
driving mode that is currently selected.
This system is based on a number of sensors that continuously monitor fa\
ctors such as the vehicle's
lateral and vertical movements, speed, and movements of the wheels. The \
sensors receive data up to 500
times per second, which is used to provide extremely fast and precise ad\
justment of each shock
absorber. The system adjusts the stiffness of the shock absorbers approx\
imately 100 times per second
Use the button in the center console to switch between the driving modes\
Comfort and Sport. This can
be done at any time.
Comfort
The Comfort mode chassis setting offers the greatest amount of shock abs\
orption and the softest ride.

l Check periodically that the load carriers and load are properly secured.\
l Remember that the vehicle's center of gravity and handling change when y\
ou carry a load on the roof.
l The vehicle's wind resistance and fuel consumption will increase with th\
e size of the load.
l Drive smoothly. Avoid rapid starts, fast cornering and hard braking.

Before a long distance trip
It is always worthwhile to have your vehicle checked at a Volvo retailer\
before driving long distances.
Your retailer will also be able to supply you with bulbs, fuses, spark p\
lugs and wiper blades for your use
in the event that problems occur.
As a minimum, the following items should be checked before any long trip\
:
l Check that engine runs smoothly and that fuel consumption is normal.
l Check for fuel, oil, and fluid leakage.
l Check transmission oil level1.
l Check condition of drive belts.
l Check state of the battery's charge.
l Examine tires carefully (the spare tire as well), and replace those th\
at are worn. Check tire pressures.
l The brakes, front wheel alignment, and steering gear should be checked b\
y your Volvo retailer only.
l Check all lights, including high beams.
l Reflective warning triangles are legal requirement in some countries.
l Have a word with your Volvo retailer if you intend to drive in countries\
where it may be difficult to
obtain the correct fuel.
l Consider your destination. If you will be driving through an area where \
snow or ice are likely to
occur, consider snow tires.

NOTE: The placards shown indicate inflation pressure for the tires installed \
on the vehicle at the factory
only.
l Use a tire gauge to check the tire inflation pressure, including the spa\
re, at least once a month and
before long trips. You are strongly urged to buy a reliable tire pressur\
e gauge, as automatic service
station gauges may be inaccurate.
l Use the recommended cold inflation pressure for optimum tire performance\
and wear.
l Under-inflation or over-inflation may cause uneven treadwear patterns.
WARNING!
l Under-inflation is the most common cause of tire failure and may result \
in severe tire cracking,
tread separation, or "blowout," with unexpected loss of vehicle control \
and increased risk of injury.
l Under-inflated tires reduce the load carrying capacity of your vehicle. \
When weather temperature changes occur, tire inflation pressures also ch\
ange. A 10- degree temperature
drop causes a corresponding drop of 1 psi (7 kPa) in inflation pressur\
e. Check your tire pressures
frequently and adjust them to the proper pressure, which can be found on\
the vehicle's tire information
placard or certification label.
Checking tire pressure
A certain amount of air seepage from the tires occurs naturally and tire\
pressure fluctuates with seasonal
changes in temperature. Always check tire pressure regularly.
Cold tires
Inflation pressure should be checked when the tires are cold.

Changing wheels
The spare wheel is located under the rear hatch in the cargo area floor.\
The jack and crank are secured in
the wheel recess (see
pages 171 and 173).
There are two jack attachment points on each side of the vehicle (see i\
llustration on next page).
To change a wheel:
- Engage the parking brake.
- Put the gear selector in (P)ark (automatic transmission) or revers\
e (manual transmission).
- Remove the wheel cap (where applicable) using the lug wrench in the \
tool bag.
- With the vehicle still on the ground, use the lug wrench to loosen the\
wheel bolts 1/2 - 1 turn by
exerting downward pressure. Turn the bolts counterclockwise to loosen.

CAUTION!
- The vehicle must not be driven with wheels of different dimensions or \
with a spare tire other than
the one that came with the vehicle. The use of different size wheels can\
seriously damage your
vehicle's transmission.
- Correct tightening torque on wheel bolts must be observed. The wheel b\
olts should never be greased
or lubricated. The extended, chromed wheel bolts must not be used with s\
teel rims, as they make it
impossible to fit the hub caps.
- Locking wheel bolts can be used on both aluminum and steel wheels. If \
hub caps are used on steel
wheels, the locking wheel bolt should be mounted in the hole as far from\
the tire's inflation valve as
possible. It would otherwise not be possible to mount the hub cap on the\
wheel.

Changing wheels
- Position the jack correctly on the bar in the attachment (see illustr\
ation above) and crank while
simultaneously guiding the base of the jack to the ground. The base of t\
he jack must be flat on a level,
firm, non-slippery surface. Before raising the vehicle, check that the j\
ack is still correctly positioned in
the attachment.
- Raise the vehicle until the wheel to be changed is lifted off the grou\
nd.
- Unscrew the wheel bolts completely and carefully remove the wheel so a\
s not to damage the threads on
the studs.
