The gauge indicates the temperature of the engine cooling system. If the\
temperature is abnormally high and the
needle enters the red zone, a message is shown in the display. Bear in m\
ind that auxiliary lamps in front of the air
intake reduce the cooling capacity at high outside temperatures and high\
engine loads.
15.Indicator and warning symbols
Function check
The indicator and warning symbols
1 light up when you turn the ignition key to the driving position (posit\
ion II)
before starting. This shows that the symbols are functioning.
When the engine starts, all symbols go out. If the engine is not started\
within 5 seconds, all of the symbols except
CHECK ENGINE and will go out. Certain symbols may not have their functio\
ns illustrated, depending on the car's
equipment.
The PARK BRAKE symbol will not go out until the parking brake has been r\
eleased.
Symbols in the center of the instrument panel
Warning symbol
The red warning symbol lights up to indicate a fault that could affect t\
he car's drivability. A text explaining the nature
of the fault will also be shown in the information display. The symbol a\
nd accompanying text will remain on until the
fault has been corrected. This symbol may also light up in combination w\
ith other indicator or warning symbols.
1On certain engines, the symbol for low oil pressure is not used. Instead\
, a text warning is provided in the information display,

WARNING
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, colorless, and odorless gas. It is prese\
nt in all exhaust gases. If you
ever smell exhaust fumes inside the vehicle, make sure the passenger com\
partment is ventilated, and
immediately return the vehicle to your retailer for correction.
Use of Additives
With the exception of fuel line antifreeze during winter months, do not \
add solvents, thickeners, or other
store-bought additives to your vehicle's fuel, cooling, or lubricating s\
ystems. Overuse may damage your
engine, and some of these additives contain organically volatile chemica\
ls. Do not needlessly expose
yourself to these chemicals.
Fuel filler door
Press the button on the light switch panel (see the illustration on
page 55) with the ignition switched off
to unlock the fuel filler door. Please note that the fuel filler door wi\
ll remain unlocked until the vehicle
begins to move forward. An audible click will be heard when the fuel fil\
ler door relocks.

Fuel requirements
If you intend to leave your vehicle while it is being refueled, this fea\
ture enables you to lock the doors/
trunk while leaving the fuel filler door unlocked.
You can also keep the vehicle locked if you remain inside it during refu\
eling. The central locking button
does not lock the fuel filler door.
Be sure the fuel filler door is not obstructed and is completely closed \
after refueling. Open the fuel filler
cap slowly during hot weather.
Refueling
The fuel tank is designed to hold approximately 15.9 US gallons (60 lit\
ers)1 with sufficient volume left
over to accommodate possible expansion of the fuel in hot weather. Be aw\
are that the "usable" tank
capacity will be somewhat less than the specified maximum. When the fuel\
level is low, such factors as
ambient temperature, the fuel's "Reid vapor pressure" characteristics, a\
nd terrain can affect the fuel

retailer.
NOTE
Do not top off with water only. This reduces the rust-protective and ant\
ifreeze qualities of the coolant
and has a lower boiling point. It can also cause damage to the cooling s\
ystem if it should freeze. Top off
with Volvo Genuine Coolant/Antifreeze only (a 50/50 mix of water and an\
tifreeze).
CAUTION
The cooling system must always be kept filled to the correct level, and \
the level must be between the
MIN and MAX marks. If it is not kept filled, there can be high local tem\
peratures in the engine which
could result in damage. Different types of antifreeze/coolant may not be\
mixed. Check coolant
regularly!
WARNING
Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is warm. Wait until the v\
ehicle cools. If it is necessary
to top off the coolant when the engine is warm, unscrew the expansion ta\
nk cap slowly so that the
overpressure dissipates.
