CAUTION
Avoid reclining the seatback any
more than needed. The seat belts pro-
vide maximum protection in a frontal
or rear collision when the driver and
the front passenger are sitting up
straight and well back in the seats. If
you are reclined, the lap belt may
slide past your hips and apply re-
straint forces directly to the abdomen
or your neck may contact the shoul-
der belt. In the event of a frontal
collision, the more the seat is re-
clined, the greater the risk of death
or serious injury.

CHECKING SERVICE REMINDER
INDICATORS (except the low fuel level
warning light and low windshield
washer fluid level warning light)1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Open one of the side doors or back door.
The open door warning light should
come on.
3. Close the door. The open door warning light should go
off.
4. Turn the ignition key to “ON”, but do not start the engine.
All the service reminder indicators ex-
cept the open door warning light should
come on. The “ABS” and “VSC TRAC”
warning lights, tire pressure warning
light and engine oil replacement re-
minder light go off after a few seconds.
The SRS warning light goes off after
about 6 seconds. (The “TRAC OFF”
(two −wheel drive models) or “VSC
OFF” (four −wheel drive models), “RSCA
OFF” indicator lights, height control in-
dicator light, manual control mode indi-
cator light and slip indicator light also
come on and go off after a few sec-
onds.) If any service reminder indicator or warn-
ing buzzer does not function as described
above, have it checked by your Toyota
dealer as soon as possible.

1: Height control mode select switch
2: Height control switch
This rear height control air suspension
controls the vehicle height depending
on vehicle driving conditions.
You can choose automatic control mode
or manual control mode. In automatic
control mode, you can select the ve-
hicle height between “HI” (high), “N”
(normal) and “LO” (low) modes with the
height control switch. In manual control
mode, you can adjust the vehicle height
seamlessly with the height control
switch.
To change the mode between automatic
control mode and manual control mode,
use the height control mode select switch. The vehicle height is automatically ad-
justed to a selected height mode. Howev-
er, when the front drive control is in “4LO”
mode, the vehicle height cannot be ad-
justed automatically even if the vehicle
condition changes, but height mode can
be changed manually with the height con-
trol switch.
(a) Vehicle height modes
“N” (normal) mode—
The vehicle height in this mode is stan-
dard. Regardless of the number of occu-
pants or the luggage loading condition, the
vehicle height is always automatically ad-
justed to a fixed height in this mode while
the engine is running.
This mode is suitable for ordinary driving.
“HI” (high) mode—
The vehicle height is about 40 mm (1.6
in.) higher at rear than “N” mode height.
This mode is suitable when driving on
bumpy roads and through water.
However, when the vehicle speed exceeds
30 km/h (18 mph) in “HI” mode, “N” mode
is automatically selected.
CAUTION
“HI” mode should be only used for
severe off road driving conditions.
Because the vehicle’s center of gravi-
ty is higher in this setting, the ve-
hicle may become unstable when
turning abruptly, resulting in an acci-
dent.

suspension—

“LO” (low) mode—
Tw o−wheel drive models—The vehicle
height is about 15 mm (0.6 in.) lower at
rear than “N” mode height.
Four −wheel drive models—The vehicle
height is about 30 mm (1.2 in.) lower at
rear than “N” mode height.
This mode allows for easy access to the
vehicle (getting in and out) and easy load-
ing and unloading.
This mode is available when the vehicle
speed is 12 km/h (7 mph) or less.
NOTICE
Use “LO” mode when the vehicle is
stopped. Otherwise, when the vehicle
speed exceeds 12 km/h (7 mph), “N”
mode is selected automatically. Prop-
er caution should be taken in places
where the overhead height is limited.
(b) Vehicle height mode changing con- dition
To change the vehicle height, it is neces-
sary to meet the following conditions.
The engine should be running.
The manual control mode indicator light
should go off.
When selecting a mode, there is a ve-
hicle speed limit. Refer to the following
table.
Yes = The mode can be selected.
No = The mode cannot be selected.

However, when you are driving on bumpy
roads, which may cause the suspension to
fully elongate, the rear height control air
suspension may not operate.
If the vehicle height is adjusted on the
slope, or with the selector lever in a posi-
tion other than “P” or “N” while the vehicle
is stopped, you may hear a sound caused
by the expansion and contraction of the
propeller shaft. This does not indicate a
malfunction.

(c) Vehicle height adjustment
To change the mode, push the height
control switch on either side of “”
(higher) or “ ” (lower).
The height control indicator light indicates
which mode is selected. (See “(d) Indica-
tor lights” described below.)
Selecting “HI” mode—
Push the height control switch on the “ ”
side when the vehicle speed is 30 km/h
(18 mph) or less.
To change “N” mode to “HI”, push the
switch once. To change “LO” mode to “HI”,
push the
switch twice.
Selecting “N” mode—
To change “HI” mode to “N”, push the
height control switch on the “ ” side
once.
If the underbody of the vehicle has
touched the surface on bumpy roads, the
vehicle height cannot be lowered with the
height control switch.
To change “LO” mode to “N”, push the
height control switch on the “ ” side
once.
Selecting “LO” mode—
Push the height control switch on the “ ”
side while the vehicle is stopped.
To change “N” mode to “LO”, push the
switch once.
To change “HI” mode to “LO”, push the
switch twice.
If the underbody of the vehicle has
touched the surface on bumpy roads, the
vehicle height cannot be lowered with the
height control switch. Even if the engine is stopped while the
vehicle height is being lowered, the opera-
tion continues for up to 35 seconds. If,
within this 35 seconds, any of the side
doors or the back door is opened, opera-
tion will continue for a further 15 seconds.
When adjusting the vehicle height with
one or more doors open, make sure that
there is nothing that might come into con-
tact with the vehicle body or around the
doors.

NOTICE
If the vehicle height is changed fre-
quently when the vehicle is heavily
loaded, the compressor may over-
heat, causing the vehicle height ad-
justment operation to stop.
Before you lower the vehicle height
with the height control switch,
check under the vehicle to make
sure nothing to damage the vehicle
or no one to be injured is there and
that the underbody of the vehicle
does not touch the ground.
After unloading, the height of a ve-
hicle equipped with the rear height
control air suspension becomes
slightly higher than the normal ve-
hicle height. Take sufficient care
where the overhead height is re-
stricted.
Do not select “LO” mode for bumpy
roads. If the underbody of the ve-
hicle touches the road surface, the
vehicle may be damaged.
If you attempt to adjust the vehicle height
with anything such as snow, ice, or stones
in contact with the vehicle body, the ve-
hicle height may not change. In this case,
stop the vehicle, press the height control
mode select switch, and check that manu-
al control mode indicator light comes on.
Then, remove the obstruction.
CAUTION
If you drive through water, set the
vehicle height to “HI” with the height
control switch and then change to
manual control mode by pushing the
height control mode select switch. Do
not exceed 30 km/h (18 mph) or “HI”
mode will automatically change to
“N” mode. Do not drive through water
deeper than about 700 mm (28 in.)
even if the vehicle height is in “HI”
mode.
NOTICE
When jacking up or insta lling tire
chains, be sure to set manual con-
trol mode by pushing the height
control mode select switch and stop
the engine. Otherwise, the vehicle
height may change because of the
automatic leveling function, result-
ing in an accident.
If your vehicle must be towed, set
the vehicle height to “N” and
change to manual control mode.
Otherwise, the vehicle height may
change because of the automatic
leveling function, resulting in an ac-
cident.
If your vehicle gets stuck in a
ditch, set manual control mode by
pushing the height control mode se-
lect switch. Otherwise, the vehicle
height may change because of the
automatic leveling function, result-
ing in an accident.
