NoteWhen the vehicle is stationary or travelling at very low speeds, the tempera-
ture displayed may be slightly higher than the actual ambient temperature as

The upper counter in the display registers the total distance covered by the
vehicle. The lower counter registers the short journeys. The last digit indicates steps
of 100 metres. The trip recorder counter may be reset by the reset button
⇒
page 52, fig. 32 .
Service interval display
A Service pre-warning will appear in the mileage displays if a service is due
soon. A spanner symbol appears and the display “km” with the distance that
can be driven until the next service appointment is due. The display will
change after approximately 10 seconds. A clock symbol appears and the
number of days until the next service appointment is due.
The following message appears on the instrument panel if a service is due:
INSP- Maintenance service
The service message will disappear approximately 20 seconds after the igni-
tion is switched on or the engine is running. This may also be turned off
pressing the short journey counter reset button for more than 0.5 seconds.

The Service Centre who carry out the maintenance service will reset the main-
tenance interval display on completion of the service.
We recommend that the repair and main tenance work only be carried out at
Authorised Service Centres.
With the ignition switched on, you can call up the current service message by
pressing the trip counter reset button for 2 seconds.
The service indicator can also be reset by pressing the trip counter button.
Proceed as follows:
- Switch off ignition.
- Keep “Reset” button on distance counter pressed.
- Connect ignition with the “Reset ” button pressed. The fixed mode
display appears.
- Release the reset button and rotate it to the right. The display will return to the normal mode. The indication has been reset.

66Traction control system (TCS)*
The traction control system prevents the driven wheels from
spinning when the vehicle is acceleratingThe warning lamp lights up when the ignition is switched on and should turn
out after about 2 seconds.
When the TCS is operating while drivi ng, the warning lamp flashes. If the
system is deactivated or if there is any fault in the same, the warning lamp will
remain lit.
It will also come on if a fault should occur in the ABS because the TCS oper-
ates in conjunction with the ABS. For further information see ⇒page 147,
“Brakes”.Electronic stabilisation programme (ESP)*


This warning lamp monitors the electronic stabilisation
programme.
This programme includes the ABS, EDL and TCS.
The warning lamp
 has the following functions:
•
It will light for about 2 seconds when the ignition is switched on while a
test of the function is carried out.
•
It flashes when the ESP is activated when driving.
•
It will light up continuously if there is a malfunction in the ESP.
•
It will light up continuously if the ESP is switched off.
•
It will also come on if a fault should occur in the ABS because the ESP
operates in conjunction with the ABS.
If the ESP warning lamp
 lights up and stays on after the engine is started,
this may mean that the control system has temporarily switched off the ESP. In this case the ESP can be reactivated by switching the ignition off and then
on again. If the warning lamp goes out, this means the system is fully
functional.
Soot accumulation in the diesel engine particulate filter *

If the indicator lights
 you may help the filter clear itself by driving in the
appropriate manner.
To do this, drive about 15 minutes in 4th or 5th gear (automatic gearbox: S
gear range) at a speed of 60 km/h, with the engine running at approximately
2000 rpm. In this way, the pollen build up in the filter is burned. When
cleaning is successful, the indicator turns off.
If the indicator
 is not deactivated, bring the vehicle to a specialised work-
shop to repair the fault.
WARNING
•
Always drive according to the road weather conditions, the terrain and
traffic. Driving recommendations should never lead to illegal maneouvers
in surrounding traffic.
•
The diesel engine particulate filter may reach extremely high tempera-
tures; it should not enter into contact with flammable materials under-
neath the vehicle. Failure to comply could result in fire.Caution
Vehicles equipped with a diesel engine particulate filter must not be refueled
using biodiesel (RME), given that the fuel system may be damaged.

Lights and visibility
92The rear window heating only works when the engine is running. When it is
switched on, a lamp lights up on the switch.
After 20 minutes, the heating device of the rear window switches off automat-
ically. If the button is pushed again, after 20 minutes the rear window heater
stays on continuously until the ignition is switched off.
For the sake of the environment
The rear window heater should be disconnected as soon as the glass is
demisted. By saving electrical power you can also save fuel.
Note
To avoid possible damage to the battery, an automatic temporary disconnec-
tion of this function is possible, co ming back on when normal operating
conditions are reestablished.
Hazard warning lights


The hazard warning lights are used to draw the attention of
other road users to your vehicle in emergencies.
If your vehicle breaks down:
1. Park your vehicle at a safe distance from moving traffic.
2. Press the button to switch on the hazard warning lights ⇒ .
3. Switch the engine off.
4. Apply the handbrake.
5. On a manual gearbox, engage 1st gear, and for an automatic move the selector lever to P.
6. Use the warning triangle to draw the attention of other road users
to your vehicle.

CautionIf the engine has been driven hard for a long period, the engine could over-
heat when it is switched off. Risk of engine damage. For this reason, you
should idle the engine for approx. 2 m inutes before you switch it off.Manual gearboxDriving a car with a manual gearboxSelecting the reverse gear
– The vehicle should be stationary with the engine idling. Press the
clutch right down.
– Place the gear lever into neutral gate and push the lever all the way down. – Slide the gearstick to the left, and then into the reverse position
shown on the gearstick.
Certain versions of the model may include a 6-speed manual gearbox, the
diagram is shown on the gearstick.
The reverse gear can only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary. When
the engine is running, before engaging this gear wait about 6 seconds with
the clutch pressed in fully in order to protect the gearbox.
The reversing lights come on when the reverse gear is selected and the igni-
tion is on.
WARNING
•
When the engine is running, the vehicle will start to move as soon as a
gear is engaged and the clutch released.
•
Never select the reverse gear when the vehicle is in motion. Risk of acci-
dent.Note
•
Do not rest your hand on the gear lever when driving. The pressure of your
hand could cause premature wear on the selector forks in the gearbox.
•
When changing gear, you should always depress the clutch fully to avoid
unnecessary wear and damage.
•
Do not hold the car “on the clutch” on hills. This causes premature wear
and damage to the clutch.

Automatic gearbox*Gearbox programmes
The automatic gearbox has two gearbox programmes.The gearbox management system is equipped with two driving programmes.
Depending on the driver or the driving situation, either a consumption
oriented programme or a more “s porty” programme will be selected.
The programme selection will be carried out automatically depending on how
the accelerator is used.•
The consumption-oriented programme will be selected if you use the
accelerator slowly or normally. This means that the gearbox will shift up
earlier and down later.
•
A more “sporty” driving programme which shifts up gear later will be
selected if you use the accelerator more quickly.
Note
A programme will, depending on the driving resistance, be selected automat-
ically that guarantees more pulling power, thus avoiding having to shift gear
constantly.

138Selector lever lock functions
The selector lever lock in positi on P or N prevents gears from
being engaged inadvertently, which would cause the vehicle
to move.
The selector lever lock is released as follows:
– Switch on the ignition.
– Press and hold the brake pedal and press the selector lever lock
on the left of the selector lever at the same time.A delay device prevents the lever form blocking, on gently passing through
position N (for example, from R to D),. This makes it possible, if the car is
stuck, to remove it “by swinging it”. Only when the lever is in position N for
more than 1 second, without pressing th e brake, does the lever block come
into operation.
At speeds of over 5 km/h the selector lever lock is automatically deactivated
in position N.Selector lever positionsP - parking lock
This is the correct position for parki ng the vehicle. To engage and disengage
P press the button on the gearstick knob and depress the brake pedal, while
the car is running.
If the car is not running, it can be unlocked by pressing the knob button.
R - reverse gear
This should only be engaged when the vehicle is at a standstill and the
engine idling. Before engaging position R, starting from position P or N,
depress the brake pedal and press the button on the gearstick knob.
In position R and with the ignition on, th e reversing lights come on.
