Placing a call
Entering a telephone number and
starting the dialing process
Enter the desired telephone number
using buttons4 toM.
The number can have up to 32 digits,
but only 13 of these are visible on the
display.
If necessary, correct number entered with

CLR key.

If necessary, correct the last number

Press one of the desired number

1 second.
The telephone number saved under
that number will be dialed.

Emergency calls “911”
The following describes how to dial a “911”
emergency call using the audio system
head unit when a Mercedes-Benz specified
mobile phone is inserted in the phone
cradle. Unless otherwise specified, the de-
scriptions refer to the audio system head
unit.
Consult the separate telephone operating
instructions that came with your mobile
phone for information on how to place a
“911” emergency call on the mobile
phone. The following conditions must be met for a
“911” emergency call:

Telephone must be switched on.

The corresponding mobile communica-
tions network must be available.
If you cannot make an emergency call, you
will have to initiate rescue measures
yourself. Placing a “911” emergency call using
audio head unit with the phone locked
Press hbutton to switch to
telephone operation.
CODE? appears in the audio display.
Press button4 on the audio head
unit until
911 appears in the audio
display.
911 appears in the audio display while
the telephone establishes the connec-
tion.
Wait until the emergency call center
answers, then describe the emergency.
Warning!G
The “911” emergency call system is a public
service. Using it without due cause is a
criminal offense.
iEmergency calls may not be possible with all
telephone networks or if certain network servic-
es and/or telephone functions are active. Check
with your local service providers.

unlocked
Press hbutton to switch to
telephone operation.
Enter 911 using the number keypad on
the audio head unit.
Press theSND key for dialing to begin.
The telephone establishes the
connection.
Wait until the emergency call center
answers, then describe the emergency. Accepting an incoming call
Accepting an incoming call in telephone
mode
With an incoming call, a ringing tone can
be heard and the caller’s telephone num-
ber, or the name under which this tele-
phone number has been saved in the
telephone book, appears on the display. If
the caller’s number is not transmitted,
CALL will appear in the display.
Press theSND key to accept call.Accepting an incoming call in cassette,
CD or radio mode
If the telephone is activated in the back-
ground (receiving symbol
S visible on dis-
play), the audio source is muted when a
call is received. The ringing tone is heard
and the caller’s telephone number or the
name under which this telephone number
has been saved in the telephone book ap-
pears on the display. If the caller’s number
is not transmitted,
CALL appears in the
display.
Press theSND key to accept the call.

Automatic transmission
For information on driving with an auto-
matic transmission, see the “Getting
started” section (
page 47).
Your vehicle’s transmission adapts its gear
shifting process to your individual driving
style by continually adjusting the shift
points up or down. These shift point adjust-
ments are performed based on current
operating and driving conditions.
If the operating conditions change, the
automatic transmission reacts by
adjusting its gear shift program.
Gear selector lever
The gear selector lever is located on the
lower part of the center console.
Gearshift pattern for automatic
transmission
P Park position
R Reverse gear
N Neutral
D Drive position
iDuring the brief warm-up, transmission up-
shifting is delayed. This allows the catalytic con-
verter to heat up more quickly to operating
temperature.
Warning!G
Make sure that absolutely no objects are ob-
structing the pedals’ range of movement.
Keep the driver’s footwell clear of all obsta-
cles. If there are any floormats or carpets in
the footwell, make sure that the pedals still
have sufficient clearance.
During sudden driving or braking maneuvers
the objects could get caught between the
pedals. You could then no longer brake or
accelerate. This could lead to accidents and
injury.

The automatic transmission selects indi-
vidual gears automatically, depending on:

positionD, you can influence transmission
shifting by:

limiting the gear range

changing gears manually
Warning!G
It is dangerous to shift the gear selector
lever out of park positionP or neutralN if
the engine speed is higher than idle speed.
If your foot is not firmly on the brake pedal,
the vehicle could accelerate quickly forward
or reverse. You could lose control of the
vehicle and hit someone or something. Only
shift into gear when the engine is idling
normally and when your right foot is firmly
on the brake pedal.
!Allow engine to warm up under low load use.
Do not place full load on the engine until the
operating temperature has been reached
(
page 307).
Shift into park position P or reverse gearR only
when the vehicle is stopped.
Avoid spinning of a drive wheel for an extended
period when driving off on slippery road
surfaces. This may cause serious damage to the
drivetrain which is not covered by the
Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

Gear ranges
With the gear selector lever in drive
positionD and driving in shift programC
orS, you can select a gear range for the
automatic transmission to operate within.
Gear selector lever (
page 175):
You can limit the gear range by pressing
the gear selector lever to the left (D-), and
reverse the gear range limit by pressing
the gear selector lever to the right (D+).
Steering wheel gearshift buttons/paddles
(
page 177):
You can limit the gear range by pressing
the left gearshift button or pulling the left
gearshift paddle, and reverse the gear
range limit by pressing the right gearshift
button or pulling the right gearshift paddle.The selected gear range appears in the
right multifunction display (
page 117).
iIf, when driving in shift programC and S the
maximum engine speed for the gear range has
been reached, the transmission shifts up auto-
matically, even if the gear range is restricted. In
shift program MAN the transmission will not
shift up automatically.
Effect
éThe transmission shifts through
fourth gear only.
èThe transmission shifts through
third gear only.
With this selection you can use the
braking effect of the engine.
Effect
çThe transmission shifts through
second gear only.
Allows the use of engine’s braking
power when driving:

on steep downgrades

in mountainous regions

under extreme operating
conditions
æThe transmission operates in the
first gear only.
For maximum use of engine’s
braking effect on very steep or
lengthy downgrades.
