Locking and unlocking
Selective setting
If you frequently travel alone, you may wish
to reprogram the SmartKey so that press-
ing buttonŒ only unlocks the driver’s
door, the storage/telephone* compart-
ment under the armrest, the glove box, and
the fuel filler flap.
Press and hold buttonsŒand‹
simultaneously for about 5 seconds
until battery check lamp5
(
page 94) flashes twice.
The SmartKey will then function as fol-
lows:Unlocking driver’s door and fuel filler
flap
Press buttonŒ once.
All turn signal lamps flash once.
An acoustic warning sounds once
(if equipped and feature activated).

Checking the batteries

If you lose a SmartKey or mechanical key,
you should do the following:
Have the SmartKey deactivated by an
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
Report the loss of the SmartKey or the
mechanical key to your car insurance
company immediately.
If necessary have the mechanical lock
replaced.
Your authorized Mercedes-Benz Center
will be glad to supply you with a replace-
ment.
iIf the battery check lamp (page 94) does
not come on briefly during check, the SmartKey
batteries are discharged.
Replace the batteries (page 391).
You can obtain the required batteries at any
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
iIf the batteries are checked within signal
range of the vehicle, pressing
button‹orŒ will lock or unlock the
vehicle accordingly.

Opening the doors from the inside
You can open a locked door from the in-
side. Open door only when conditions are
safe to do so.

Pull on door handle1 on the respec-
tive door.
If the door was locked, locking knob2
will move up.
iIf you hear a warning signal, you have forgot-
ten to switch off the headlamps before opening
the driver’s door.
In addition, the message
Turn off lights
appears in the multifunction display.
Switch off the headlamps.
!Failure to switch off the headlamps when
leaving the vehicle may result in a discharged
battery.
iIf the vehicle has previously been centrally
locked with the SmartKey, opening a door from
the inside will trigger the anti-theft alarm system.
To cancel the alarm, do one of the following:
Press buttonŒor‹on the
SmartKey.
Insert the SmartKey in the starter switch.
!Opening a door causes the windows on that
side of the car to open slightly. They will return to
the up position when the door is closed.
The side windows will not open or close if the
battery is discharged or the windows are imped-
ed by ice. As a result, you may no longer be able
to properly close the door. Do not attempt to
force the door shut. Doing so may damage the
door or the side window. Correct the condition
that prevents the windows from operating before
attempting to close the door.

Illumination of the emergency release
button:
The button flashes for 30 minutes after
opening the trunk.
The button flashes for 60 minutes after
closing the trunk.
Automatic central locking
The doors and the trunk automatically lock
when the vehicle is set into motion.
You can deactivate the automatic locking
using the control system, see “Setting
automatic locking” (
page 146).
Locking and unlocking from the inside
You can lock or unlock the doors and the
trunk from the inside using the central
locking or unlocking switch. This can be
useful, for example, if you want to lock the
vehicle before starting to drive.
The fuel filler flap will not be locked or
unlocked with the central locking or
unlocking switch, respectively.iThe emergency release button unlocks
the trunk while the vehicle is standing still or
in motion.
iThe emergency release button does not un-
lock the trunk if the vehicle battery is discharged
or disconnected.
iIf the vehicle has previously been centrally
locked with the SmartKey, opening the trunk
from the inside will trigger the anti-theft alarm
system.
To cancel the alarm, do one of the following:
Press buttonŒor‹on the
SmartKey.
Insert the SmartKey in the starter switch.
iYou can open a locked door from the inside.
Open door only when conditions are safe to do
so.
iThe doors unlock automatically after an
accident if the force of the impact exceeds a
preset threshold.
The vehicle locks automatically when the ignition
is switched on and the wheels are turning at a
vehicle speed of approximately 9 mph (15 km/h)
or more. You could therefore lock yourself out
when the vehicle
is pushed or towed
is on a test stand
Warning!G
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
SmartKey from the starter switch, take it
with you, and lock the vehicle. Do not leave
children unattended in the vehicle, or with
access to an unlocked vehicle. A child’s
unsupervised access to a vehicle could
result in an accident and/or serious
personal injury.

not go out automatically.
Leaving an interior lamp switch in the ON posi-
tion for extended periods of time with the engine
turned off could result in a discharged battery.
iThe interior lighting is factory-set to
automatic mode.
iWhen you open the trunk, the trunk lighting
switches on automatically.

What to do if …

Possible causes:

Do not forget that the brake system
requires electrical energy and may
be operating with restricted capa-
bility. Considerably greater brake
pedal force is required and the stop-
ping distance is increased.
Stop the vehicle immediately in a safe loca-
tion and check the poly-V-belt.
If it is broken:
Do not continue to drive.
Otherwise, the engine will overheat due
to an inoperative water pump which may
result in damage to the engine. Contact
an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
If it is in order:
Contact an Mercedes-Benz Center
immediately. Adjust driving to be consis-
tent with reduced braking responsive-
ness.
