COMAND navigation (introduction)
Updating the map software
You can update the map software yourself
using a DVD.
Notes about handling DVDs

Only hold discs by the edge.


Handle discs carefully to prevent read
problems.


Avoid getting scratches, fingerprints
and dust on discs.


Use a commercially-available cleaning
cloth to clean discs. Do not wipe them
with a circular motion, but only in
straight lines from the center out-
wards.


Place discs back in their boxes after
use.


Protect discs from heat and direct sun-
light.
Updating process
The updating process has the following
phases:

The updating process can take between 10
and 60 minutes, depending on the size of the
map software. If the radio was switched on be-
fore you started the updating process, you can
still adjust the volume. You can also use
COMAND to operate the automatic air condition-
ing and to cancel the process. Other functions
are not operational.
If possible, carry out the update when the vehicle
is stationary.

If you carry out the update with the engine
switched off and the vehicle battery has insuffi-
cient power, COMAND may automatically switch
off during the process in order to protect the bat-
tery. If this occurs, restart the update with the
engine running period. Similarly, if the SmartKey
position is unintentionally switched to 0, restart
the update.Warning!

Never leave the engine running in an en-
closed space. The exhaust gases contain
carbon monoxide. Inhaling exhaust gases
constitutes a health hazard and could lead
to loss of consciousness or even death.

Lighting
Interior lighting in the front
The controls are located in the overhead
control panel.

The OFF indicator lamp next to the but-
ton comes on.
The interior lighting remains switched
off in darkness, even when you:

The interior lighting switches on in
darkness when you:

unlock the vehicle


remove the SmartKey from the
starter switch

Manual control

Switching on/off front interior light-
ing: Press button 3.

Switching on/off rear interior light-
ing: Press button 2.

Switching on/off front reading
lamps: Press button 1 or 5.
The reading lamps are integrated into
the interior rear view mirror.

Ambient lighting: the brightness of
the ambient lighting is adjusted via
COMAND (
page 79).

Leaving an interior light switch in the ON po-
sition for extended periods of time with the en-
gine turned off could result in a discharged
battery.

If the door remains open, the interior lighting
switches off automatically after approximately
5minutes.
An interior lamp switched on manually does not
go out automatically.

outside (vehicles with KEYLESS-GO*)
In vehicles with trunk opening/closing sys-
tem* and KEYLESS-GO*, you can close the
trunk and lock the vehicle simultaneously
from the outside using the KEYLESS-GO
locking/closing switch.
1KEYLESS-GO locking/closing switch
Make sure you have the SmartKey with
KEYLESS-GO with you.

Press switch1 briefly.
The vehicle is locked and the trunk
closes automatically. With the hood and all doors closed, all
turn signal lamps flash three times to
confirm locking. The locking knobs in
the doors move down. The anti-theft
alarm system is activated.
Trunk emergency release
With the emergency release button, the
trunk can be opened from inside the trunk.

Briefly press emergency release

The trunk opens.
Illumination of the emergency release but-
ton:


The button will flash for 30 minutes af-
ter opening the trunk.


The button will flash for 60 minutes af-
ter closing the trunk.

If the trunk lid comes into contact with an
object while closing (e.g. luggage that has been
piled too high) in the upper motion sequence, the
closing procedure is stopped and the trunk re-
opens slightly.

The emergency release button unlocks and
opens the trunk while the vehicle is standing still
or in motion.
i
The emergency release button does not
open the trunk if the vehicle battery is dis-
charged or disconnected.

Switch on the ignition (

Push in cigarette lighter1.The lighter will pop out automatically
when hot.
Power outlet
The power outlet is located in the rear cen-
ter console.
Switch on the ignition (

Flip up cover1 and insert electrical
plug (cigarette lighter type).

The lighter socket can be used to accommo-
date 12V DC electrical accessories (up to a max-
imum of 85 W) designed for use with the
standard “cigarette lighter” plug type. Keep in
mind, however, that connecting accessories to
the lighter socket (for example extensive con-
necting and disconnecting, or using plugs that do
not fit properly) can damage the lighter socket.
With the socket damaged, the lighter may no
longer be able to be placed in the heating
(pushed-in) position, or the lighter may pop out
too early with the lighter not hot enough.
To help avoid damaging the cigarette lighter
socket, we recommend connecting 12V DC elec-
trical accessories designed for use with a stan-
dard “cigarette lighter” plug type to the 12V
power outlets (
page 458) in your vehicle
whenever possible.

Operation of the rear door lighters is only
possible, if the override switch (
page 67) is de-
activated.
i
If the engine is off and the cigarette lighter is
being used extensively, the vehicle battery may
become discharged.
i
The power outlet can be used to
accommodate 12V DC electrical accessories
(e.g. air pump, auxiliary lamps) up to a maximum
of 180 W.
If the engine is off and the outlet is being used
extensively, the vehicle battery may become dis-
charged.

When you engage or release the electric
parking brake, the red indicator lamp for
the electric parking brake flashes for
approx.10 seconds. Afterward, it goes out
or lights up continuously. The yellow warn-
ing lamp for the electric parking brake lights
up.
The electric parking brake is malfunctioning
or overheated for example due to over- or
undervoltage.

Carefully drive off (
page 364).

Visit an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center as
soon as possible.
In the event of overvoltage or undervoltage:

Remove the cause of the overvoltage or und-
ervoltage, e.g. charge the battery or restart
the engine.

Switch ignition off and back on again, and en-
gage or release electric parking brake
(page 364).
If the electric parking brake still cannot be re-
leased:

Release electric parking brake mechanically
(page 616).

Visit an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center as
soon as possible.
