3-2. Using the air conditioning system and defogger
■Switching between outside air and recirculated air modes
Press  .
The mode switches between   (recycles air inside the vehicle), “AUTO” 
and   (introduces air from outside the vehicle) modes each time the 
button is pressed.
When the system is switched to automatic mode, the air conditioning sys -
tem operates automatically.
Defogging the windshield

Maintenance and care
CAUTION
■When working near the electric cooling fan or radiator grille
Be sure the power switch is “OFF”.
With the power switch in “IG-ON” mode, the electric cooling fan may automati-
cally start to run if the air conditioning is on and/or the coolant temperature is high.

■Safety glasses
Wear safety glasses to prevent flying or falling material, fluid spray, etc. from getting 
in the eyes.
NOTICE
■If you remove the air cleaner filter
Driving with the air cleaner filter removed may cause excessive engine wear due to 
dirt in the air. Also a backfire could  cause a fire in the engine compartment.

Maintenance and care
Air conditioning filter
The air conditioning filter must be changed regularly to maintain air condi-
tioning efficiency.
Set the air conditio ning system to recirculated mode.
The air conditioning filter case cannot be removed with the system in 
the outside air mode.
Turn the power switch to “OFF” mode.
Open the glove box and

emove the partition.
Remove the filter cover.
Push the tabs and remove the 
filter case.

■Changing interval
Inspect and replace the air conditioning filter according to the maintenance sched-
ule. In dusty areas or areas with heavy traffic flow, early replacement may be 
r
 equired. (For scheduled maintenance information, refer to the “Warranty and Ser -
vices Guide/Owner's Manual Supp le
 ment/Scheduled Maintenance”.)
■If air flow from the vents decreases dramatically
The filter may be clogged. Check the filter and replace if necessary.
NOTICE
■When using the air conditioning system
Make sure that a filter is always installed. 
Using the air conditioning system without  a filter may cause damage to the system.
Remove the air conditioning fil-
ter from the filter case and

eplace it with a new one.
The “ UP” marks shown on the 
filter and the filter case should 
be pointing up.
