Introduction4 1Your Kia vehicle is equipped with
many high technology, electroni-
cally controlled systems that help
to ensure your vehicle operates
properly and provides the per-
formance that you expect. These
systems utilize computers to
monitor the operation of various
systems and components and
help to control their operation.
These computerized system oper-
ations are wide-ranging and
involve components to reduce
emissions, to continuously evalu-
ate the readiness of the airbag and
seatbelt pretensioner systems, to
determine when the airbag and
seatbelt pretensioner systems
should be deployed and then to
activate the deployment, and if
equipped, to operate anti-lock
braking, traction control and elec-
trical stability control to assist the
driver to control the vehicle in dif-
ficult driving situations. These
systems electronically store infor-
mation that is useful to service
technicians when they need to
diagnose and repair these sys-
tems.Additional information is stored
only when a crash occurs that
results in the deployment of the
airbags or seatbelt pretensioners
This type of data storage is done
by devices called event data
recorders (EDR).
After a crash event, the airbag and
seatbelt pretensioner computer
system, known as the
Supplemental Restraint System
Control Module (SRSCM) or
Airbag Control Unit (ACU), may
record some information about
the condition of the vehicle and
how it was being operated. This
information consists of data relat-
ed to seatbelt usage and if there
was diagnostic information in the
airbag or seatbelt systems at the
time that a crash occurred, and if
the ACU sensed that a crash of
sufficient severity occurred to
require seat belt pretensioner or
airbag deployment.To retrieve this information, spe-
cial equipment is needed and
access to the vehicle or the device
that stores the data is required.
Kia will not access information
about a crash event or share it
with others except:
• in response to an official
request of police or similar gov-
ernment office, or
with the consent of the vehicle
owner or, if the vehicle is leased,
with the consent of the lessee,
or
as part Kia’s defense of litiga-
tion through the discovery
process, or
as required by law.
Your rights with respect to the
information discussed above may
vary from state to state. In some
states, such information is con-
sidered private, is exclusively
owned by the owner of the motor
vehicle, and is not retrievable or
usable by another person or enti-

Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
(if equipped)
The ABS system continuously sens-
es the speed of the wheels. If the
wheels are going to lock, the ABS
system repeatedly modulates the
hydraulic brake pressure to the
wheels.
When you apply your brakes under
conditions which may lock the
wheels, you may hear a “tik-tik’’
sound from the brakes, or feel a cor-
responding sensation in the brake
pedal. This is normal and it means
your ABS system is active.
In order to obtain the maximum ben-
efit from your ABS system in an
emergency situation, do not attempt
to modulate your brake pressure and
do not try to pump your brakes.
Press your brake pedal as hard as
possible or as hard as the situation
warrants and allow the ABS system
to control the force being delivered to
the brakes.
WARNING
- ABS Brakes
Your ABS is not a substitute for
good driving judgement. You
can still have an accident. In
fact, your ABS system will prob-
ably not be able to prevent an
accident in the following driving
conditions:
Dangerous driving, such as neglecting safety precautions,
speeding, or driving too close
to the vehicle in front of you.
Driving at high speed in situa- tions providing considerably
less traction, such as wet con-
ditions where hydroplaning
could occur.

Driving too fast on poor roadsurfaces. The ABS is designed
to improve maximum braking
effectiveness on typical high-
ways and roads in good con-
dition. On poor road surfaces
in poor condition, the ABS
may actually reduce braking
effectiveness.

The Traction Control System (TCS)
helps the vehicle accelerate on slip-
pery road surfaces by preventing the
drive wheels from spinning exces-
sively. It also provides improved driv-
ing force and steering.
TCS operationTCS ON condition
When the ignition is turnedON, TCS and TCS OFF
indicator light illuminate for
approximately 3 seconds,
then TCS is turned on.
Press the TCS button to turn TCS off. (TCS OFF
indicator will illuminate). To
turn the TCS on, press the
TCS button (TCS OFF
indicator light will go off).
When starting the engine, you may hear a slight tick-
ing sound. This is the TCS
performing an automatic
system self-check and does
not indicate a problem.
When operating
When the TCS is in opera-
tion, TCS indicator light
blinks.
When the traction control system is operating prop-
erly, you can feel a slight
pulsation in the vehicle.
This is only the effect of
brake control and indi-
cates nothing unusual.
When moving out of mud or driving on a slippery
road, pressing the accel-
erator pedal may not
cause the engine rpm
(revolutions per minute) to
increase.

The indicator light illuminates when
the cruise function switch (COAST/
SET or RES/ACCEL) is ON.
TCS indicator
(Traction Control

when the ignition switch is turned
ON, but should go off after approxi-
mately 3 seconds. When the TCS is
on, it monitors the driving conditions
and under normal driving conditions,
the TCS light will remain off. When a
slippery or low traction condition is
encountered, the TCS will operate,
and the TCS indicator will blink to
indicate the TCS is operating.
TCS OFF indicator
(if equipped)The TCS OFF indicator will illuminate
when the ignition switch is turned
ON, but should go off after approxi-
mately 3 seconds. To switch to TCS
OFF mode, press the TCS button.
The TCS OFF indicator will illuminate
indicating the TCS is deactivated.
If this indicator stays on in the TCS
ON mode, the TCS may have a mal-
function. Take your car to the author-
ized Kia dealer and have the system
checked.

Tire maintenance In addition to proper inflation, correct
wheel alignment helps to decrease
tire wear. If you find a tire is worn
unevenly, have your dealer check the
wheel alignement.
When you have new tires installed,
make sure they are balanced. This
will increase vehicle ride comfort and
tire life. Additionally, a tire should
always be rebalanced if it is removed
from the wheel.Tire tractionTire traction can be reduced if you
drive on worn tires, tires that are
improperly inflated or on slippery
road surfaces. Tires should be
replaced when tread wear indicators
appear. To reduce the possiblity of
losing control, slow down whenever
there is rain, snow or ice on the road.
Tire sidewall labelingFederal law requires tire manufactur-
ers to place standardized information
on the sidewall of all tires. This infor-
mation identifies and describes the
fundamental characteristics of the
tire and also provides the tire identifi-
cation number (TIN) for safety stan-
dard certification. The TIN can be
used to identify the tire in case of a

2. Tire size designation A tire’s sidewall is marked with a tire
size designation. You will need this
information when selecting replace-
ment tires for your car. The following
explains what the letters and num-
bers in the tire size designation

4. Tire ply composition and mate-
rialThe number of layers or plies of rub-
ber-coated fabric in the tire. Tire
manufacturers also must indicate the
materials in the tire, which include
steel, nylon, polyester, and others.
The letter "R" means radial ply con-
struction; the letter "D" means diago-
nal or bias ply construction; and the
letter "B" means belted-bias ply con-
struction.
5. Maximum permissible inflationpressureThis number is the greatest amount
of air pressure that should be put in
the tire. Do not exceed the maximum
permissible inflation pressure. Refer
to the Tire and Loading Information
label for recommended inflation
pressure.6. Maximum load ratingThis number indicates the maximum
load in kilograms and pounds that
can be carried by the tire. When
replacing the tires on the vehicle,
always use a tire that has the same
load rating as the factory installed
tire.7. Uniform tire quality grading The following information relates to
the tire grading system developed by
the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) for grading
tires by tread wear, traction and tem-
perature performance. Tread wear
The tread wear grade is a compara-
tive rating based on the wear rate of
the tire when tested under controlled
conditions on a specified govern-
ment test course. For example, a tire
graded 150 would wear one-and-a-
half times as well on the government
course as a tire graded 100.
The relative performance of tires
depends upon the actual conditions
of their use. However, performance
may differ from the norm because of
variations in driving habits, service
practices and differences in road
characteristics and climate.
These grades are molded on the
side-walls of passenger vehicle tires.
The tires available as standard or
optional equipment on your vehicles
may vary with respect to grade.
WARNING -
Tire age
A tire more than 6 years old may
sustain separation of cord lay-
ers inside the tire. Tire failure to
separation of cord, can cause
accidents resulting in severe
injuries or death.
Make sure to check the manu-
facturing date of the tire and
replace it within 6 years of that
date.
