Introduction4 1Your Kia vehicle is equipped with
many high technology, electroni-
cally controlled systems that help
to ensure your vehicle operates
properly and provides the per-
formance that you expect. These
systems utilize computers to
monitor the operation of various
systems and components and
help to control their operation.
These computerized system oper-
ations are wide-ranging and
involve components to reduce
emissions, to continuously evalu-
ate the readiness of the airbag and
seatbelt pretensioner systems, to
determine when the airbag and
seatbelt pretensioner systems
should be deployed and then to
activate the deployment, and if
equipped, to operate anti-lock
braking, traction control and elec-
trical stability control to assist the
driver to control the vehicle in dif-
ficult driving situations. These
systems electronically store infor-
mation that is useful to service
technicians when they need to
diagnose and repair these sys-
tems.Additional information is stored
only when a crash occurs that
results in the deployment of the
airbags or seatbelt pretensioners
This type of data storage is done
by devices called event data
recorders (EDR).
After a crash event, the airbag and
seatbelt pretensioner computer
system, known as the
Supplemental Restraint System
Control Module (SRSCM) or
Airbag Control Unit (ACU), may
record some information about
the condition of the vehicle and
how it was being operated. This
information consists of data relat-
ed to seatbelt usage and if there
was diagnostic information in the
airbag or seatbelt systems at the
time that a crash occurred, and if
the ACU sensed that a crash of
sufficient severity occurred to
require seat belt pretensioner or
airbag deployment.To retrieve this information, spe-
cial equipment is needed and
access to the vehicle or the device
that stores the data is required.
Kia will not access information
about a crash event or share it
with others except:
• in response to an official
request of police or similar gov-
ernment office, or
 with the consent of the vehicle
owner or, if the vehicle is leased,
with the consent of the lessee,
or
 as part Kia’s defense of litiga-
tion through the discovery
process, or
 as required by law.
Your rights with respect to the
information discussed above may
vary from state to state. In some
states, such information is con-
sidered private, is exclusively
owned by the owner of the motor
vehicle, and is not retrievable or
usable by another person or enti-

Pre-tensioner seat beltYour vehicle is equipped with driver’s
and front passenger’s pre-tensioner
seat belts. The purpose of the pre-
tensioner is to make sure that the
seat belts fit tightly against the occu-
pant’s body in certain frontal colli-
sions. The pre-tensioner seat belts
can be activated together with the air
bags, where the frontal collision is
severe enough.The pre-tensioner seat belt is
installed at the front seats, and the
sensor is equipped inside the buckle,
where presence of passenger is
sensed by the fastening of the seat
belts. Therefore, pre-tensioner will
not activate if the passenger is not
fastened with the seat belts.
Likewise, it will activate if buckled
even without a passenger in the
seat. Pre-tensioner seat belt is
designed to activate when the seat-
belt is in use. To ensure the preten-
sioner seatbelts activate in event of a
possible seatbelt buckle switch mal-
function, the system is designed to
activate regardless of whether a
seat belt is in use or if no seat belt
use is detected within 6 seconds of
turning the ignition switch ON.
The seat belt pre-tensioner system
consists mainly of the following com-
ponents. Their locations are shown in
the illustration.

WARNING
To obtain maximum benefit from
a pre-tensioner seat belt:
 The seat belt must be worn
correctly.
 The seat belt must be adjusted to the correct position.
CAUTION
When the pre-tensioner seatbelts are activated, a loud noisemay be heard and fine dust,which may appear to be smoke,may be visible in the passengercompartment and are not toxic.
Although, it is harmless, the finedust may cause skin irritationand should not be breathed forprolonged periods. Wash yourhands and face thoroughly afteran accident in which the airbags and/or pre-tensioner seatbelts were activated.
CAUTION
 Because the sensor that acti- vates the SRS air bag is con-nected with pre-tensioner seatbelt, the SRS air bag warninglight on the instrument panelwill blink or illuminate forapproximately 6 seconds afterthe ignition key has beenturned to the “ON” position,then the light should go off.
 If the pre-tensioner seat belt is not working properly, thiswarning light will illuminateeven if there is no malfunctionof SRS air bag system. If theSRS air bag warning lightdoes not illuminate when theignition key is turned to “ON” ,or if it remains illuminatedafter blinking or illuminatingfor approximately 6 seconds,or if it illuminates while thevehicle is being driven, pleasehave an authorized Kia dealerinspect the pre-tensioner seatbelt or SRS air bag system assoon as possible.

CAUTION
If the seat position sensor is not
working properly, the SRS airbag warning light ( ) on theinstrument panel will illuminateeven if there is no malfunctionof the SRS air bag system,because the SRS air bag warn-ing light is connected with theseat position sensor. If the SRSair bag warning light does notilluminate when the ignition keyis turned to the "ON" position, ifit remains illuminated afterblinking for approximately 6seconds, or if it illuminateswhile the vehicle is being driv-en, have an authorized Kia deal-er inspect the seat position sen-sor and the advanced SRS airbag system as soon as possi-ble.
WARNING
 Modification to the seat struc- ture can adversely affect the
seat position sensor and
cause the air bag to deploy at
a different level than should
be provided.
 Failure to properly wear safety belts can increase the risk or
severity of injury by causing
the air bags to deploy at a dif-
ferent level than should be
provided.
 Do not place any objects underneath the front seats
which could damage the seat
position sensor or interfere
with the occupant classifica-
tion system.
 Do not place any objects that may cause magnetic fields
near the front seat. These may
cause a malfunction of the
seat position sensor.

 Ignoring the SRS indicatorlight (air bag indicator and
passenger air bag off indica-
tor) can result in serious or
fatal injury if the air bags
occupant classification sys-
tem or pretensioners do not
work properly. Have your car
checked by a dealer as soon
as possible if the SRS warning
light alerts you to a potential
problem.
 Sitting improperly or out of position can result in serious
or fatal injury in a crash. All
occupants should sit upright
in their seats with their feet on
the floor until the vehicle is
parked and the ignition key is
removed.

Occupant classification systemThe occupant classification system
detects the presence of a passenger
in the front passenger's seat and will
turn off the front passenger's air bag
under certain conditions.
The occupant classification system is
designed to detect the presence of a
properly-seated occupant and deter-
mine if the front passenger's air bag
should be enabled (may inflate) or
not.
Only the front passenger airbag is
controlled by the Occupant
Classification System.
Main components of occupant
classification system A detection device located within
the front passenger seat cushion.
 Electronic system to determine
whether passenger air bag system
should be activated or deactivated.
 A indicator light located on the
instrument panel which illuminates
the words "PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF" indicating the frontal passen-
ger air bag system is deactivated.
 The instrument panel air bag warn-
ing light is interconnected with the
occupant classification system. If there is no passenger in the front
passenger seat or if the passenger in
the front passenger seat is very light,
(such as a child), the front
PASSEN-
GER AIR BAG OFF indicator may
illuminate.
When this indicator is ON, the front
passenger front air bag will not
deploy.

*1The system detects a person who is generally adult size as an adult, thus allowing the pas-
senger air bag to deploy. When a smaller adult sits in the front passenger seat, the system may
detect their body shape as that of a child, thus preventing air bag deployment.
*2When a larger child who has outgrown a child restraint system sits in the front passenger seat, the system may recognize him/her as an adult depending on his/her physique sitting posture,
or objects in the lap of the occupant, thus permitting airbag deployment.
CAUTION
If the "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" indicator illuminates or blinks con- tinuously when a person of adult size sits in the front passenger'sseat, it could be because that person isn't sitting properly in theseat.If this happens, turn the vehicle off, make sure the seat back isnot reclined, have the passenger center on the seat cushion, with legscomfortably extended, and the safety belt properly positioned. Restartthe vehicle and have the person remain in this position long enoughto allow the system to detect the person and activate the passengerair bag.
WARNING
If the front passenger seat
should be modified for persons
with disabilities that may affect
the operation of the occupant
classification system, contact
an authorized Kia dealer.
WARNING
 Even though your vehicle is equipped with the occupant
classification system, do not
install a child restraint system
in the front passenger seat.
The child could be severely
injured or killed if the air bag
deploys. Children are afforded
the most protection in the
event of an accident when
they are restrained by the
proper restraint system in the
rear seat.

WARNING
- Side and cur-
tain air bags
 In order for side and curtain air bags to provide the best
protection, both front seat
occupants and both outboard
rear occupants should sit in
an upright position with the
safety belts properly fastened.
Importantly, children should
sit in a proper child restraint
system in the rear seat.
 When children are seated in the rear outboard seats, they
must be seated in the proper
child restraint system. Make
sure to put the child restraint
system as far away from the
door side as possible, and
secure the child restraint sys-
tem in a locked position.

 If a small child is seated onthe rear outboard seat cush-
ion, it is probable that they will
below the deployment level of
the side curtain airbag and
thus not protected by that
airbag.
 Do not allow the passengers to lean their heads or bodies
onto doors, put their arms on
the doors, stretch their arms
out of the window, or place
objects between the doors
and passengers when they are
seated on seats equipped with
side air bags.
 Never try to open or repair any components of the side cur-
tain air bag system. This
should only be done by an
authorized Kia dealer.
Failure to follow the above men-
tioned instructions can result in
severe injury or death to the
vehicle occupants in an acci-
dent.

Repairing or scrapping the vehi-
cles  Repairing steering wheel, instru-
ment panel, center console or
roofs, or installing car audio around
center console or painting front
metal sheet could disable the air
bag system. Have them checked
by an authorized Kia dealer.
 When leaving the vehicle at an
authorized Kia dealer, inform the
facility that the vehicle is equipped
with air bag system, and leave the
owner’ s manual in the vehicle.
 Since air bag system contains
explosive chemical substances,
contact an authorized Kia dealer
when scrapping the vehicle.
CAUTION
Do not modify any part of the
Supplemental Restraint System.Modification could make the airbag system ineffective or couldcause unnecessary deploy-ment.
WARNING
 Do not modify your steering wheel, seat or any other part
of the Supplemental Restraint
System. Modification could
make the system inoperable.
 Do not work on the system’s components or wiring. This
could cause the air bags to
inflate inadvertently, possibly
seriously injuring someone.
Working on the system could
also disable the system so
that the air bags would not
deploy in a collision.
 Any work on the SRS system, such as removing, installing,
repairing, or any work on the
steering wheel must be per-
formed by a qualified Kia tech-
nician. Improper handling of
the air bag system may result
in serious personal injury or
death.
