Vehicle Damage Warnings
Also, in this manual you will nd these notices:
Notice:These mean there is something
that could damage your vehicle.
A notice tells about something that can damage
the vehicle. Many times, this damage would not be
covered by your vehicle’s warranty, and it could
be costly. But the notice will tell what to do to help
avoid the damage.
When you read other manuals, you might see
CAUTION and NOTICE warnings in different colors
or in different words.
There are also warning labels on the vehicle. They
use the same words, CAUTION or NOTICE.
Vehicle Symbols
The vehicle has components and labels that use
symbols instead of text. Symbols are shown along
with the text describing the operation or
information relating to a specic component,
control, message, gage, or indicator.
If you need help guring out a specic name of a
component, gage, or indicator, reference the
following topics:

If the alarm does not sound when it should but the
lights ash, check to see if the horn works. The
horn fuse may be blown. To replace the fuse, see
Fuses and Circuit Breakers on page 426.
If the alarm does not sound or the front turn signal
lamps do not ash, see your dealer for service.
Passlock®
Your vehicle has the Passlock®theft-deterrent
system.
Passlock
®is a passive theft-deterrent system.
Passlock®enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder is
turned with a valid key. If an incorrect key is used or
the ignition lock cylinder is tampered with, the fuel
system is disabled and the vehicle will not start.
During normal operation, the security light will turn
off approximately ve seconds after the engine
is started. SeeSecurity Light on page 192.If the engine stalls and the security light ashes,
wait about 10 minutes until the light stops
ashing before trying to restart the engine.
Remember to release the key from START as
soon as the engine starts.
If the engine does not start after three tries, the
vehicle needs service.
If the engine is running and the security light
comes on, you will be able to restart the engine if
you turn the engine off. However, your Passlock
®
system is not working properly and must be
serviced by your dealer. Your vehicle is not
protected by Passlock
®at this time. See your
dealer for service.

on page 462.

Ignition Positions
With the key in the
ignition switch, you can
turn to four different
positions.
LOCK (A):This position locks the ignition. It also
locks the transmission on automatic transmission
vehicles. It will locks the steering wheel on
manual transmission vehicles when the key is
removed. It is a theft-deterrent feature. You
will only be able to remove your key when the
ignition is turned to LOCK.
If you have an automatic transmission, the ignition
switch cannot be turned to LOCK unless the
shift lever is in PARK (P).Notice:Using a tool to force the key from the
ignition switch could cause damage or break
the key. Use the correct key and turn the key
only with your hand. Make sure the key is all the
way in. If it is, turn the steering wheel left and
right while you turn the key hard. If none of this
works, then your vehicle needs service.
ACC (ACCESSORY) (B):This is the position in
which you can operate your electrical accessories
or items plugged into the accessory power
outlets. On automatic transmission vehicles,
this position unlocks the ignition. On manual
transmission vehicles, it unlocks the ignition and
steering wheel. Use this position if your vehicle
must be pushed or towed.
ON (C):This is the position that the switch
returns to after you start your engine and release
the switch. The switch stays in ON when the
engine is running. But even when the engine is
not running, you can use ON to operate the
electrical accessories and to display some
instrument panel cluster warning and indicator
lights. The transmission is also unlocked in
this position on automatic transmission vehicles.

Use these buttons to shift into and out of four-wheel
drive. You can choose from the following:

m(Two-Wheel High):This setting is for driving
in most street and highway situations. Your front
axle is not engaged in two-wheel drive.
{CAUTION:
Shifting the transfer case to NEUTRAL
can cause your vehicle to roll even if the
transmission is in PARK (P), or if you
have a manual transmission, even if you
are in gear. You or someone else could
be seriously injured. Be sure to set the
parking brake before placing the transfer
case in NEUTRAL. SeeParking Brake
on page 130.
N (NEUTRAL):Shift the vehicle’s transfer case to
NEUTRAL only when towing your vehicle.4
m(Four-Wheel High):This setting engages
your front axle to help drive your vehicle. Use
four-wheel high when you need extra traction, such
as on snowy or icy roads, or in most off-road
situations.

n(Four-Wheel Low):This setting also
engages your front axle to give you extra traction.
It sends the maximum power to all four wheels.
You might choose four-wheel low if you were
driving off-road in sand, mud, or deep snow and
while climbing or descending steep hills.
Indicator lights in the buttons show you which
setting you are in. The indicator lights will come on
briey when you turn on the ignition and one will
stay on the selected setting. If the lights do
not come on, you should take your vehicle in for
service. An indicator light will ash while shifting.
It will stay on when the shift is completed.
If for some reason the transfer case does not shift,
it will return to the last chosen setting.

Cleaning the Mirror
When cleaning the mirror, use a paper towel or
similar material dampened with glass cleaner.
Do not spray glass cleaner directly on the mirror
housing.
Automatic Dimming Rearview Mirror
with OnStar
®, Compass and
Temperature Display
Your vehicle may have this feature. When on,
the automatic dimming mirror dims to the proper
level to minimize glare from lights behind you
after dark.
The mirror has a dual display in the upper right
corner of the mirror face that shows the compass
reading and the outside temperature.Control buttons for the OnStar
®system are at
the bottom of the mirror. SeeOnStar®System
on page 146for more information about the
services OnStar
®provides.
P(On/Off):This is the on/off button.
Temperature and Compass Display
Press the on/off button, located to the far
left, briey to turn the compass/temperature
display on or off.
If the display reads CAL, the compass needs
to be calibrated. For more information, see
“Compass Calibration” following.
To adjust between Fahrenheit and Celsius,
do the following:
1. Press and hold the on/off button for
approximately four seconds until either a
ashing F or C appears.
2. Press the button again to change the display
to the desired unit of measurement. After
approximately four seconds of inactivity,
the new unit will be locked in and the
compass/temperature display will return.

on or off.
Temperature Display
The temperature can be displayed by pressing the
compass/temperature button. Pressing the
compass/temperature button once briey, will
toggle the display reading on and off. To alternate
the temperature reading between Fahrenheit and
Celsius, press and hold the compass/temperature
button for approximately three seconds until the
display blinks F and C. After approximately ve
seconds of inactivity, the display will stop blinking
and display the last selection made.
If an abnormal reading is displayed, see your
dealer.
