Rocking Your Vehicle to Get It Out
First, turn the steering wheel left and right to
clear the area around the front wheels. Turn the
traction control system off. SeeTraction Control
System (TCS) on page 281. Then shift back
and forth between REVERSE (R) and a forward
gear, spinning the wheels as little as possible.
For a manual transmission, shift slowly
between either FIRST (1) or SECOND (2) and
REVERSE (R), allowing the wheels to stop
before shifting into gear. To prevent transmission
wear, wait until the wheels stop spinning before
shifting gears. Release the accelerator pedal while
you shift, and press lightly on the accelerator
pedal when the transmission is in gear. By slowly
spinning the wheels in the forward and reverse
directions, you will cause a rocking motion
that could free your vehicle. If that does not get
your vehicle out after a few tries, it might need to
be towed out. If your vehicle does need to be

Loading Your Vehicle
It is very important to know how much weight your
vehicle can carry. This weight is called the vehicle
capacity weight and includes the weight of all
occupants, cargo and all nonfactory-installed
options. Two labels on your vehicle show how much
weight it may properly carry, the Tire and Loading
Information label and the Certication label.
{CAUTION:
Do not load your vehicle any heavier than
the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR),
or either the maximum front or rear Gross
Axle Weight Rating (GAWR). If you do,
parts on your vehicle can break, and it
can change the way your vehicle handles.
These could cause you to lose control
and crash. Also, overloading can shorten
the life of your vehicle.

Automatic Transmission Fluid
How to Check Automatic
Transmission Fluid
It is not necessary to check the transmission
uid level. A transmission uid leak is the only
reason for uid loss. If a leak occurs, take
the vehicle to the dealership service department
and have it repaired as soon as possible.
There is a special procedure for checking and
changing the transmission uid. Because
this procedure is difficult, you should have this
done at the dealership service department.

be sure to use the uid listed inRecommended

Manual Transmission Fluid

Jump Starting
If your battery has run down, you may want to use
another vehicle and some jumper cables to start
your vehicle. Be sure to use the following steps to
do it safely.
{CAUTION:
Batteries can hurt you. They can be
dangerous because:
They contain acid that can burn you.
They contain gas that can explode
or ignite.
They contain enough electricity
to burn you.
If you do not follow these steps exactly,
some or all of these things can hurt you.
Notice:If you try to start your vehicle by
pushing or pulling it, you could damage your
vehicle. Do not push or pull your vehicleto start it; instead, use the jump starting
procedure in this manual to start your vehicle
when the battery has run down.
1. Check the other vehicle. It must have a
12-volt battery with a negative ground system.
Notice:If the other vehicle’s system is not
a 12-volt system with a negative ground, both
vehicles can be damaged. Only use vehicles
with 12-volt systems with negative grounds to
jump start your vehicle.
2. Get the vehicles close enough so the jumper
cables can reach, but be sure the vehicles
are not touching each other. If they are,
it could cause a ground connection you do
not want. You would not be able to start
your vehicle, and the bad grounding could
damage the electrical systems.
To avoid the possibility of the vehicles rolling,
set the parking brake rmly on both vehicles
involved in the jump start procedure. Put
an automatic transmission in PARK (P) or a
manual transmission in NEUTRAL before
setting the parking brakes.

Lifting Your Vehicle
{CAUTION:
Lifting a vehicle can cause an injury.
The vehicle can slip off the jack and roll
over you or other people. You and they
could be badly injured. Find a level place
to lift your vehicle. To help prevent the
vehicle from moving:
1. Set the parking brake rmly.
2. Put an automatic transmission
shift lever in PARK (P), or shift a
manual transmission to FIRST (1)
or REVERSE (R).
3. Turn off the engine.
To be even more certain the vehicle
won’t move, you can put blocks in
front of and behind the wheels.
{CAUTION:
Getting under a vehicle when it is jacked
up is dangerous. If the vehicle slips off
the jack, you could be badly injured or
killed. Never get under a vehicle when it
is supported only by a jack.
{CAUTION:
Raising your vehicle with the jack
improperly positioned can damage the
vehicle and even make the vehicle fall.
To help avoid personal injury and vehicle
damage, be sure to place the jack in the
proper location before raising the vehicle.
