Manual Operation
wPWRx(Power/Temperature):Press the
PWR button on the left side of the climate control
panel to turn the entire climate control system
on or off. Press the up or down arrow on the switch
to manually increase or decrease the temperature
inside the vehicle.
Press the PWR button on the right side of the
climate control panel to turn the passenger’s
climate control system on or off. Press the up or
down arrow on the switch to manually increase or
decrease the temperature for the passenger.
If the passenger’s PWR button is off, the driver’s
temperature switch controls the temperature for the
entire vehicle.
«9ª(Fan):Press this switch to increase or
decrease the fan speed. Pressing this switch
cancels automatic operation and places the system
in manual mode. Press AUTO to return to
automatic operation.
If the airow seems low when the fan speed is at
the highest setting, the passenger compartment
air lter may need to be replaced. For moreinformation, seePassenger Compartment Air Filter
on page 184andScheduled Maintenance on
page 465.
ªN«(Mode):Pressing the switch and changing
the mode cancels automatic operation and
places the system in manual mode. Press the
AUTO button to return to automatic operation.
To change the current mode, select one of
the following:
H(Vent):This mode directs air to the instrument
panel outlets.
%(Bi-Level):This mode directs about half of the
air to the instrument panel outlets, and then directs
most of the remaining air to the oor outlets. In
automatic operation, cooler air is directed to the
upper outlets and warmer air to the oor outlets.
6(Floor):This mode directs most of the air to
the oor outlets with some air directed to the side
window outlets, and some of the air directed to
the windshield.
The mode switch can also be used to select the
defog mode. Information on defogging and
defrosting can be found later in this section.

Outlet Adjustment
Use the thumbwheel to open or close the outlets.
Operation Tips

Clear away any ice, snow or leaves from the
air inlets at the base of the windshield that
may block the ow of air into your vehicle.
Use of non-GM approved hood deectors may
adversely affect the performance of the
system.
Keep the area around the base of the
instrument panel console and air path under
the seats clear of objects to help circulate
the air inside of your vehicle more effectively.
Passenger Compartment Air Filter
The passenger compartment air lter removes
certain particles from the air, including pollen and
dust particles. Reductions in airow, which
may occur more often in dusty areas, indicate that
the lter may need to be replaced early.
The lter should be replaced as part of the routine
scheduled maintenance. SeeScheduled
Maintenance on page 465for more information.
To check or replace the air lter, do the following:
1. With the hood open, unlatch and remove
the access panel.
The passenger compartment air lter and
access panel are located on the passenger’s
side of the engine compartment near the
battery. SeeEngine Compartment Overview
on page 374for more information on location.
2. Pull the old lter out of the housing.
3. Insert the new lter into the housing.
4. Reinstall the air lter access panel.

If the LOW OIL LEVEL or LOW OIL PRESSURE
message on the Driver Information Center
(DIC) appears, it means you need to check the
engine oil level right away. For more information,
see LOW OIL LEVEL and LOW OIL PRESSURE
underDIC Warnings and Messages on page 206.
You should check the engine oil level regularly;
this is an added reminder.
Checking Engine Oil
It is a good idea to check the engine oil every time
you get fuel. In order to get an accurate reading,
the oil must be warm and the vehicle must be
on level ground.
The engine oil dipstick handle is a yellow loop.

for the location of the engine oil dipstick.
1. Turn off the engine and give the oil several
minutes to drain back into the oil pan. If you
do not do this, the oil dipstick might not
show the actual level.
2. Pull out the dipstick and clean it with a paper
towel or cloth, then push it back in all the
way. Remove it again, keeping the tip down,
and check the level.

What to Do with Used Oil
Used engine oil contains certain elements that may
be unhealthy for your skin and could even cause
cancer. Do not let used oil stay on your skin for very
long. Clean your skin and nails with soap and
water, or a good hand cleaner. Wash or properly
dispose of clothing or rags containing used engine
oil. See the manufacturer’s warnings about the use
and disposal of oil products.
Used oil can be a threat to the environment. If you
change your own oil, be sure to drain all the oil
from the lter before disposal. Never dispose of oil
by putting it in the trash, pouring it on the
ground, into sewers, or into streams or bodies of
water. Instead, recycle it by taking it to a place
that collects used oil. If you have a problem
properly disposing of your used oil, ask your
dealer, a service station, or a local recycling center
for help.
Supercharger Oil
Because they are technically qualied and have
the proper tools, you should have your dealer
perform this maintenance.

When to Inspect the Engine Air
Cleaner/Filters
Inspect the air cleaner/lters at the MaintenanceII
intervals and replace them at the rst oil change
after each 50,000 mile (83 000 km) interval.

information. If you are driving in dusty/dirty
conditions, inspect the lters at each engine oil
change.

How to Inspect the Engine Air
Cleaner/Filters
To inspect the air cleaner/lters, remove the lters
from the vehicle and lightly shake the lters to
release loose dust and dirt. If the lters remain
caked with dirt, new lters are required.
To inspect or replace the lters, do the following:
1. Some XLR-V vehicles, have a single piece
black cover that snaps over the entire air
cleaner assembly. For vehicles with this cover,
simply pull it’s left/right sides toward the
outside of the vehicle and lift up to remove
cover. Reinstall the cover when you are
nished inspecting/replacing the lters.2. Move the clasps on the top of the engine air
cleaner/lter cover forward to unlatch the
cover.
3. Lift the front of the cover at an angle and
remove. This is necessary due to the four
tabs located on the rear of the cover.
4. Remove the engine air cleaner/lter element
and any loose debris that might be found in
the air cleaner base.
