STORAGE COMPARTMENT
WARNING
- Flammable
materials
Do not store cigarette lighters,
propane cylinders, or other flamma-
ble/explosive materials in the vehi-
cle. These items may catch fire
and/or explode if the vehicle is
exposed to hot temperatures for
extended periods.
CAUTION
 To avoid possible theft, do notleave valuables in the storagecompartment.
 Always keep the storage com- partment covers closed while dri-ving. Do not attempt to place so many items in the storage com-partment that the storage com- partment cover can not closesecurely.

Glove boxThe glove box can be locked and
unlocked with a master key.
To open the glove box, make sure it is
unlocked, then pull the handle (1) and
the glove box will automatically open (2).
Close the glove box after use.
WARNING
Never leave the removed center
storage console in the vehicle
unsecured. The storage console
can be thrown about in the vehicle
in a sudden stop or an accident
causing serious injuries or death to
the vehicle occupants. Always
make sure the storage console is
locked in place.

Cup holder
FrontTo use the cup holders, pull the cup hold-
er cover out. Push the cover to close after
use.
WARNING
- Hot liquids
 Do not place uncovered cups of
hot liquid in the cup holder while
the vehicle is in motion. If the hot
liquid spills, you could be burned.
Such a burn to the driver could
cause a loss of control of the
vehicle.
 To reduce the risk of personal injury in the event of sudden stop
or collision, do not place uncov-
ered or unsecured bottles, glass-
es, cans, etc., in the cup holder
while the vehicle is in motion.

- Ashtray use
 Do not use the vehicle’s ashtrays as waste receptacles.
 Putting lit cigarettes or matches in an ashtray with other com-

Driving your vehicle84Sports modeWhether the vehicle is stationary or in
motion, sports mode is selected by push-
ing the shift lever from the “D” position
into the manual gate. To return to “D”
range operation, push the shift lever back
into the main gate.
In sports mode, moving the shift lever
backwards and forwards will allow you to
make gearshifts rapidly. In contrast to a
manual transaxle, the sports mode
allows gearshifts with the accelerator
pedal depressed.Up (+) : Push the lever forward once to
shift up one gear.
Down (-) : Pull the lever backwards once to shift down one gear.
✽ ✽NOTICE• In sports mode, the driver must exe-
cute upshifts in accordance with road
conditions, taking care to keep the
engine speed below the red zone.
• In sports mode, only the five forward gears can be selected. To reverse or
park the vehicle, move the shift lever
to the “R” or “P” position as required.
• In sports mode, downshifts are made automatically when the vehicle slows
down. When the vehicle stops, 1st gear

• In sports mode, when the engine rpm
approaches the red zone, shift points
are varied to upshift automatically.
• To maintain the required levels of vehicle performance and safety, the
system may not execute certain
gearshifts when the shift lever is oper-
ated.
• When driving on a slippery road, push the shift lever forward into the
+(up) position. This causes the
transaxle to shift into the 2nd gear
which is better for smooth driving on
a slippery road. Push the shift lever to
the -(down) side to shift back to the
1st gear.

4Parking brake To apply the parking brake, depress the
parking brake pedal fully and firmly
downward while applying the service
brake. To release the parking brake, pull the
parking brake release lever while apply-
ing the service brake. The pedal will auto-
matically extend to the fully released
position. If the parking brake pedal does
not release or does not release all the
way, have the system checked by an
authorized Kia dealer.
CAUTION
Driving with the parking brake
applied will cause excessive brakepad and brake rotor wear.
WARNING
- Parking brake
 To prevent unintentional move- ment when stopped and leaving
the vehicle, do not use the
gearshift lever in place of the
parking brake. Set the parking
brake AND make sure the
gearshift lever is securely posi-
tioned in P (Park) for automatic
transaxle equipped vehicles.
 Never allow a person who is unfa- miliar with the vehicle or children
to touch the parking brake. If the
parking brake is released unin-
tentionally, serious injury may
occur.

4Safety chains You should always attach chains
between your vehicle and your trailer.
Cross the safety chains under the tongue
of the trailer so that the tongue will not
drop to the road if it becomes separated
from the hitch.
Instructions about safety chains may be
provided by the hitch manufacturer or by
the trailer manufacturer. Follow the man-
ufacturer’s recommendation for attaching
safety chains. Always leave just enough
slack so you can turn with your trailer.
And, never allow safety chains to drag on
the ground.
Trailer brakes If your trailer weighs more than the max-
imum trailer weight without trailer brakes
loaded, then it needs its own brakes and
they must be adequate. Be sure to read
and follow the instructions for the trailer
brakes so you’ll be able to install, adjust
and maintain them properly.
 Don’t tap into your vehicle's brake sys-
tem.
Driving with a trailer Towing a trailer requires a certain
amount of experience. Before setting out
for the open road, you must get to know
your trailer. Acquaint yourself with the
feel of handling and braking with the
added weight of the trailer. And always
keep in mind that the vehicle you are
driving is now a good deal longer and not
nearly so responsive as your vehicle is
by itself.
Before you start, check the trailer hitch
and platform, safety chains, electrical
connector(s), lights, tires and mirror
adjustment. If the trailer has electric
brakes, start your vehicle and trailer mov-
ing and then apply the trailer brake con-
troller by hand to be sure the brakes are
working. This lets you check your electri-
cal connection at the same time.
During your trip, check occasionally to be
sure that the load is secure, and that the
lights and any trailer brakes are still work-
ing.
WARNING
- Trailer brakes
Do not use a trailer with its own
brakes unless you are absolutely
certain that you have properly set
up the brake system. This is not a
task for amateurs. Use an experi-
enced, competent trailer shop for
this work.

What to do in an emergency
 Do not take this vehicle through anautomatic car wash while the com-
pact spare tire is installed.
 Do not use tire chains on the com- pact spare tire. Because of the
smaller size, a tire chain will not fit
properly. This could damage the
vehicle and result in loss of the
chain.
 The compact spare tire should not be installed on the front axle if the
vehicle must be driven in snow or
on ice.
 Do not use the compact spare tire on any other vehicle because this
tire has been designed especially
for your vehicle.
 The compact spare tire’s tread life is shorter than a regular tire.
Inspect your compact spare tire
regularly and replace worn com-
pact spare tires with the same size
and design, mounted on the same
wheel.
Changing tires Jacking instructions The jack is provided for emergency
tire changing only.
To prevent the jack from “rattling”
while the vehicle is in motion, lower
the jack to the lowest position, place
the jack in the luggage side trim and
turn the wing bolt (1) clockwise firmly.
Make sure the jack is secured firmly
by trying to move the jack forward
and backward. Follow jacking instructions to reduce
the possibility of personal injury.
WARNING
- Changing
tires
 Never attempt vehicle repairs in the traffic lanes of a public
road or highway.
 Always move the vehicle com- pletely off the road and onto
the shoulder before trying to
change a tire. The jack should
be used on level firm ground.
If you cannot find a firm, level
place off the road, call a tow-
ing service company for
assistance.
 Be sure to use the correct front and rear jacking posi-
tions on the vehicle; never use
the bumpers or any other part
of the vehicle for jack support.
