4. Turn the ignition key to the "START" position and release it when the en- gine starts. SC060B1-E The following suggestions are made to assist in achieving the greatest degree of fuel economy.
o Maintaining a constant check on fuel
consumption will enable the most economical use pattern and drivingstyle to be adopted.
o Avoid using the vehicle for very short journeys if possible, particularly whena cold start is involved.
o Ensure that tyre pressures are main- tained at the correct level.
o Use only the recommended grade of
fuel.
o Avoid carrying unnecessary weight, and if a roof rack is in use, remove itas soon as possible after use.
o Anticipate the road and conditions ahead to enable adjustments in speedto be made smoothly. Avoid heavyacceleration and sharp braking.
o Avoid cruising at unnecessary high speeds.
o Always ensure that the periodic main- tenance services are performed by aHyundai authorised repairer at the
time and/or mileage intervals speci-fied.
o Use the air conditioning only when necessary.

C050B01A-EAT Normal Conditions The Starting Procedure:
1. Insert key, and fasten the seat belt.
2. Depress the clutch pedal fully and
place the gearshift lever (manual transaxle) in neutral or the selector lever (automatic transaxle) in "P" (park) position.
3. After turning the ignition key to the "ON" position, make certain all warn-ing lights and gauges are function-ing properly before starting the en- gine.
WARNING:
Be sure that the clutch is fully de- pressed when starting a manual transaxle vehicle. This will prevent sudden movement should the ve-hicle be started in gear without the clutch depressed. Otherwise there is the potential tocause damage to the vehicle or in- jury to a person inside or outside of the vehicle as a result of this suddenvehicle movement.

o Keep your car clean. For maximumservice, your Hyundai should be kept clean and free of corrosive materi- als. It is especially important that mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be allowed toaccumulate on the underside of the car. This extra weight can result in increased fuel consumption and alsocontribute to corrosion.
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unneces-
sary weight in your car. Weight re-duces fuel economy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than
necessary. If you are waiting (andnot in traffic), turn off your engine and restart only when you're ready to go.
o Remember, your Hyundai does not require extended warm-up. After theengine has started, allow the engine to run for 10 to 20 seconds prior toplacing the vehicle in gear. In very cold weather, however, give your engine a slightly longer warm-up pe-riod. o Don't "labour" or "over-rev" the en-
gine. Labouring is driving too slowlyin too high a gear resulting in the vehicle kangarooing. If this happens, shift to a lower gear. Over-revving isracing the engine beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shifting at the recommended speeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly. The air conditioning system is oper-ated by engine power so your fueleconomy is reduced when you use it.SMOOTH CORNERING
C150A01A-EAT Avoid braking or gear changing in cor- ners, especially when roads are wet. Ideally, corners should always be taken under gentle acceleration. If you followthese suggestions, tyre wear will be held to a minimum.

ZC170C1-E Anti-freeze/Corrosion inhibitor The cooling system must always con- tain an Ethylene-Glycol based anti-freeze solution. The system is filled during manufacture with solution of the correct strength which should bechecked before the onset of winter and adjusted or changed as required. NOTE: The anti-freeze solution contains a corrosion inhibitor to prevent degra- dation of the aluminium castingscontained within the engine. There- fore, never, drain the system and refill with water only. In addition, anti-freeze solution must ALWAYS be used in vehicles fitted withair conditioning, to prevent the heater matrix from freezing and subsequently bursting with the refrigeration system inuse.WINTER MOTORING
DC170A1-E The onset of winter conditions subject motor vehicles to greater operating de- mands. Therefore, the following sug- gestions will assist in maintaining peakperformance and reliability during these periods: ZC170B1-E Electrical System Winter conditions impose severe de- mands upon vehicle electrical systems,particularly the charging circuit. The battery condition and performance along with the alternator performance anddrive belt condition should be checked prior to the onset of winter. ZC170D1-E Door Locks Should the door lock mechanism be- come frozen, a proprietary lock de-icershould be used. Alternatively, warming the door key may thaw the door lock. However, the key should be handledcarefully to avoid burning the fingers. Never attempt to thaw a frozen door lock using hot water, since the waterwill eventually freeze and compound the problem. NOTE: The proper temperature for using the immobiliser key is from -40°C to 80°C (-40°F to 176°F). If you heat theimmobiliser key over 80°C (176°F) to open the frozen lock, it may cause damage to the transponder in itshead.

7. Switch "ON" the main beam
headlamps before carefully remov- ing the jumper cables have been removed, switch "OFF" the main beam headlamps. SD040A2-E If the temperature gauge indicates overheating:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as
it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P"
(automatic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off.
3. If coolant is running out under the car or steam is coming out fromunder the bonnet stop the engine. Do not open the bonnet until thecoolant has stopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is no visible loss of coolant and no steam,leave the engine running and check to be sure the engine cooling fan is operating.If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.
4. Check to see if the water pump drive belt is broken. If it is not missing,check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfactory,check for coolant leaking from the radiator, hoses or under the car. (If the air conditioning had been in use,it is normal for cold water to be draining from it).
IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS
1. Ensure that the booster battery is 12 volt type. If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, ensure that the two vehicles are not touch- ing.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment in both vehicles.
3. Ensure that the engine of the ve- hicle providing the jump start is run- ning prior to connection of the jump cables.
4. Connect the red jump cable to the positive (+) terminal of the boosterbattery and the other end to thepositive (+) terminal of the dis- charged battery.
5. Attach the black jump cable to the negative (-) terminal of the boosterbattery, and the other end to a ground point within the engine compartmentof the vehicle with the flat battery. Do not connect to the negative battery terminal of the flat battery sincesparks may be generated with the subsequent risk of explosion.
6. Raise the booster vehicle engine speed to 2,000 r.p.m. and start theengine of the vehicle with the flat battery. CAUTION:
If the jump cables are incorrectlyinstalled, damage to the vehicle elec-trical system may occur, in particu- lar the electronic components such as the Fuel Injection system com- puter and the Automatic Transaxle computer. The battery must neverbe disconnected whilst the engine is running.

ENGINE COOLANT CHECKING AND REPLACING

WARNING:
Do not remove the radiator cap
when the engine is hot, since the system is pressurised and coolant may be ejected from the radiator resulting in scalding. NOTE: It is imperative that vehicles fitted with an air conditioning systemhave a coolant concentration of the recommended strength at all times. The use of the air condition-ing system when the cooling sys- tem is filled with water only will result in the heater matrix freezingand subsequently bursting.

Coolant recommendations
Only ethylene glycol based coolantwith a corrosion inhibitor suited to aluminium alloy engine components should be used in the cooling system.No further additives or inhibitors should be used. The coolant specific gravity should be checked as pre-scribed in the maintenance schedule to ensure adequate frost and corro- sion protection. In addition, the en-gine coolant must be replaced at the specified interval since the corrosion inhibitor properties deteriorate withtime.It is important to note that whilst anincrease in the concentration of anti freeze gives an increase in the level of frost protection, a solution which isin excess of 65% anti freeze will result in reduced frost protection and engine overheating. Therefore therecommended concentration of 50% should not be exceeded for general use. The use of methanol based anti freeze compounds may result in engine over- heating and will invalidate the vehiclewarranty.

CHECKING THE CLUTCH FLUID

(Manual Transaxle)To Check the Clutch Fluid
The clutch fluid level in the master cylinder should be checked when performing other under bonnet checks. The system should be checked forleakage at the same time.Ensure that the clutch fluid level isalways between the "MAX" and "MIN" level markings on the fluid reservoir. Fill as required. Fluid loss indicates aleak in the clutch system which should be inspected and repaired immedi- ately.
WARNING:
Brake fluid is hygroscopic and should never be stored in an un- sealed container. The presence ofwater in the braking system will cause vapour locks and increase the possibility of brake fade alongwith promoting corrosion within the braking system. The brake fluid must be changed at the specifiedtime or mileage interval to ensure continued safe operation of the system. Brake fluid will cause rapidand serious damage to paintwork. If accidental spillage occurs, the affected area must be rinsed withwater immediately. Do not allow brake fluid to come into contact with the eyes or to be ingestedand ensure that fluid is safely stored away form the reach of chil- dren.

SG140A1-E Condenser Ensure that the condenser is periodi- cally inspected and that accumula- tions of dirt, dead insects and leaves etc, are removed to ensure that theefficiency of the system is not im- paired.
