Front shock absorber adjustment
The spring preload can be adjusted to suit the rid-
er’s weight and riding conditions.
Adjust the spring preload as follows.
To increase the spring preload, turn the adjusting
ring in direction

To decrease the spring preload, turn the adjusting
ring in direction
b.NOTE:_ A special wrench can be obtained at a Yamaha
dealer to make this adjustment. _
WARNING
_ Always adjust the shock absorbers on the left
and right side to the same setting. Uneven ad-
justment can cause poor handling and loss of
stability, which could lead to an accident. _

NOTE:_ This model is equipped with an ignition circuit cut-
off system. The engine can be started under the
following conditions.
When the transmission is in neutral. The neu-
tral indicator light should come on. If the light
does not come on, ask a Yamaha dealer to
inspect it.
When the clutch is disengaged with the trans-
mission and the drive select lever in any posi-
tion. However, it is recommended to shift into
neutral before starting the engine.
_5. Use the starter (choke) in reference to the fig-
ure:

1: Cold engine start-
ambient temperature below 5°C.
Position
2: Cold engine start-
ambient temperature at 0°C – 30°C
and warming up position.

3: Cold engine start-

Drive select lever operation and reverse driv-
ingCAUTION:_ Before shifting, stop the machine and return
the throttle lever to its closed position, other-
wise the transmission may be damaged. _NOTE:_ When shifting into reverse, the clutch must be dis-
engaged. _1. Bring the machine to a complete stop and re-
turn the throttle lever to the closed position.
2. Pull in the clutch lever to disengage the
clutch.
3. Apply the brake pedal.
4. While pulling the knob, move the drive select
lever toward the rear until it completely stops.NOTE:_ When in reverse, the reverse indicator light should
be on. If the light does not come on, ask a Yamaha
dealer to inspect the machine. _

1. Bring the machine to a stop by applying the
front brake.
2. With the front and rear brake applied, pull the
clutch lever, shift into the neutral position,
and then apply the parking brake.
3. Stop the engine by setting the engine stop
switch to “”.
4. With the front and rear brakes applied, pull
the clutch lever, shift into 1st gear, and then
slowly release the clutch lever, brake lever
and brake pedal.NOTE:_ Make sure that the neutral indicator light goes off. _5. Turn the key to “OFF”.

Front brake pad inspection
Each brake pad is provided with a wear indicator
groove. The indicator grooves allow checking of
brake pad wear without disassembling the brake.
Apply the brake and inspect the wear indicator
grooves. If a brake pad is worn to the point that the
wear indicator groove is almost in contact with the
disc plate, ask a Yamaha dealer to replace the
brake pads as a set.NOTE:_ The wheels need to be removed to inspect the
brake pads. (See pages 8-85–8-87 for wheel re-
moval and installation procedures.) _
