Brake fluid leakage
Check to see if any brake fluid is leaking out of the
pipe joints or brake fluid reservoirs. Apply the
brakes firmly for one minute. If the lever moves
slowly inward, there may be a leak in the brake
system. If there is any leakage, the brake system
should be inspected by a Yamaha dealer.
Brake operation
Test the brakes at slow speed after starting out to
make sure they are working properly. If the brakes
do not provide proper braking performance, in-
spect the brake pads for wear. (See pages 8-93–
8-95.)
WARNING
_ Always check the brakes at the start of every
ride. Do not ride the ATV if you find any prob-
lem with the brakes or you could lose braking
ability, which could lead to an accident. If a
problem cannot be corrected by the adjust-
ment procedures provided in this manual,
have a Yamaha dealer check for the cause. _

Select lever safety system cable adjustment
The select lever safety system cable stretches
with use, resulting in improper function. To prevent
this, the cable must be adjusted regularly. This ad-
justment, however, should be left to a Yamaha
dealer.

Front brake pad check
Check the brake pads for damage and wear. If a
brake pad thickness is less than 1.0 mm, have a
Yamaha dealer replace the pads as a set.NOTE:_ The wheels need to be removed to check the
brake pads. (See pages 8-115–8-117 for removal
and installation procedures.) _

Rear brake pad check
Check the brake pads for damage or wear. Wear
indicator grooves are provided on the brake pads.
These indicators allow checking of brake pad wear
without disassembling the brake. Check the wear
indicator grooves. If a brake pad has worn to the
point that the wear indicator grooves have almost
disappeared, ask a Yamaha dealer to replace the
pads as a set.NOTE:_ The wheels need to be removed to check the
brake pads. (See pages 8-115–8-117 for wheel re-
moval and installation procedures.) _

Inspecting the brake fluid level
Insufficient brake fluid may let air enter the brake
system, possibly causing the brakes to become in-
effective.
Before riding, check that the brake fluid is above
the minimum level mark and replenish when nec-
essary. A low brake fluid level may indicate worn
brake pads and/or brake system leakage. If the
brake fluid level is low, be sure to check the brake
pads for wear and the brake system for leakage.
The rear brake fluid master cylinder reservoir is lo-
cated under panel C. (See pages 8-23–8-27 for
panel removal and installation procedures.)
Observe these precautions:
When checking the fluid level, make sure the
top of the master cylinder reservoirs are level.
Use only the designated quality brake fluid.
Otherwise, the rubber seals may deteriorate,
causing leakage and poor brake performance.
Recommended brake fluid: DOT 4
