Q:If I am a good driver, and I never drive far from
home, why should I wear safety belts?
A:You may be an excellent driver, but if you are in an
accident — even one that is not your fault — you
and your passengers can be hurt. Being a good
driver does not protect you from things beyond your
control, such as bad drivers.
Most accidents occur within 25 miles (40 km)
of home. And the greatest number of serious
injuries and deaths occur at speeds of less than
40 mph (65 km/h).
Safety belts are for everyone.
How to Wear Safety Belts Properly
This part is only for people of adult size.
Be aware that there are special things to know about
safety belts and children. And there are different
rules for smaller children and babies. If a child will be
riding in your vehicle, seeOlder Children on page 1-28
orInfants and Young Children on page 1-31. Follow
those rules for everyone’s protection.
First, you will want to know which restraint systems your
vehicle has.
We will start with the driver position.
Driver Position
Lap-Shoulder Belt
The driver has a lap-shoulder belt. Here is how to wear
it properly.
1. Close and lock the door.
2. Adjust the seat so you can sit up straight. To see
how, see “Seats” in the Index.

To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle.
The belt should go back out of the way.
Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the
way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage
both the belt and your vehicle.
Shoulder Belt Height Adjustment
Before you begin to drive, move the shoulder belt
adjuster to the height that is right for you.
To move it down, push
down the release button (A)
and move the height
adjuster to the desired
position. You can move the
adjuster up by pushing the
release button up. After you
move the adjuster to where
you want it, try to move it
without pushing the release
button to make sure it has
locked into position.
Adjust the height so that the shoulder portion of the belt
is centered on your shoulder. The belt should be
away from your face and neck, but not falling off
your shoulder.

If something is between an occupant and an
airbag, the bag might not inate properly or it
might force the object into that person causing
severe injury or even death. The path of an
inating airbag must be kept clear. Do not put
anything between an occupant and an airbag,
and do not attach or put anything on the
steering wheel hub or on or near any other
airbag covering. And, if your vehicle has
roof-mounted side impact airbags, never secure
anything to the roof of your vehicle by routing
the rope or tiedown through any door or window
opening. If you do, the path of an inating side
impact airbag will be blocked. The path of an
inating airbag must be kept clear.

Q(Lock):Press the lock button to lock all the doors.
The interior lamps will turn off after all of the doors
are closed. If enabled through the Driver Information
Center (DIC), the parking lamps will ash once to
indicate locking has occurred. If enabled through the
DIC, the horn will also chirp to indicate locking has
occurred.
K(Unlock):Press the unlock button to unlock the
driver’s door. If the button is pressed again within
ve seconds, all remaining doors will unlock. The interior
lamps will come on and stay on for 20 seconds or
until the ignition is turned on. If enabled through the DIC,
the parking lamps will ash twice to indicate unlocking
has occurred.
V(Remote Trunk Release):The trunk will unlatch
when this button on the transmitter is pressed. You
can open the trunk with the transmitter when the vehicle
speed is less than 2 mph (3 km/h) or when the ignition
is off.
L(Vehicle Locator/Panic Alarm):Press this button
to locate your vehicle. The horn will chirp three times
and the headlamps and parking lamps will ash
three times. Press and hold the button for three seconds
to sound the panic alarm. The horn will chirp and the
headlamps and parking lamps will ash for 30 seconds.
Press the button again to cancel the panic alarm.
Programmable Horn Chirp
Through the DIC, you may choose whether or not to
have a horn chirp when you use the remote keyless
entry transmitter to lock or unlock the doors.

information.
Matching Transmitter(s) to
Your Vehicle
Each remote keyless entry transmitter is coded to
prevent another transmitter from unlocking your vehicle.
If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can
be purchased through your dealer. Remember to bring
any remaining transmitters with you when you go to
your dealer. When the dealer matches the replacement
transmitter to your vehicle, any remaining transmitters
must also be matched. Once your dealer has coded the
new transmitter, the lost transmitter will not unlock
your vehicle. Each vehicle can have a maximum of
four transmitters matched to it.

/(Remote Start):Press and release the lock button
and then press and hold the remote start button to
use the remote start feature.
To start the vehicle using the remote start feature, do
the following:
1. Aim the transmitter at the vehicle.
2. Press and release the transmitter’s lock button, then
immediately press and hold the transmitter’s remote
start button until the vehicle’s turn signal lights ash
or for at least four seconds if the lights are not visible.
The vehicle’s doors will be locked.
3. When the vehicle starts, the parking lamps will turn
on and remain on while the vehicle is running.
4. If it is your rst remote start since last driving,
repeat these steps while the engine is still
running for a 10 minute time extension.When you enter the vehicle during a remote start, turn
the key to the on position to drive the vehicle.
If the vehicle is left running it will automatically shut off
after 10 minutes unless a time extension has been
done. To manually shut off a remote start, do any of
the following:
Aim the remote keyless entry transmitter at the
vehicle and press the remote start button until
the parking lamps turn off.
Turn on the hazards warning ashers.
Turn the ignition switch on and then off.

Doors and Locks
Door Locks
{CAUTION:
Unlocked doors can be dangerous.
Passengers — especially children — can
easily open the doors and fall out of a
moving vehicle. When a door is locked, the
handle will not open it. You increase the
chance of being thrown out of the vehicle
in a crash if the doors are not locked. So,
wear safety belts properly and lock the
doors whenever you drive.
Young children who get into unlocked
vehicles may be unable to get out. A child
can be overcome by extreme heat and can
suffer permanent injuries or even death
from heat stroke. Always lock your vehicle
whenever you leave it.

Outsiders can easily enter through an
unlocked door when you slow down or
stop your vehicle. Locking your doors can
help prevent this from happening.
There are several ways to lock and unlock your vehicle.
From the outside, use your key or remote keyless
entry transmitter, if equipped. Turn the key
counterclockwise to unlock the door. Turn the key
counterclockwise a second time to unlock all doors at
the same time and a third time to open the trunk.
From the inside, use the manual lock knobs or the power
lock switches.
