shown in the lowest part of the display. Push the switch
just below to turn on each function.
(b) Tone and balance
How good an audio system program sounds to you is largely
determined by the mix of the treble, mid±range, and bass
levels. In fact, different kinds of music and vocal programs
usually sound better with different mixes of treble, mid±range,
and bass.
A good balance of the left and right stereo channels and of the
front and rear sound levels is also important.
Keep in mind that if you are listening to a stereo recording or
broadcast, changing the right/left balance will increase the
volume of one group of sounds while decreasing the volume
of another.

Each time you push the ªAUDIO CONTROLº knob, the
display changes as in the following. To adjust the tone and
balance, turn the knob.
BAS: Adjusts low±pitched tones.
MID: Adjusts mid±pitched tones.
TRE: Adjusts high±pitched tones.
FADE: Adjusts the sound balance between the front and rear
speakers.
BAL: Adjusts the sound balance between the right and left
speakers.

210(c) Your radio antenna
To remove an antenna, carefully turn it counterclockwise.
NOTICE
To prevent damage to the antenna, make sure it is
removed before driving your vehicle through anautomatic car wash.
(d) Your cassette player
When you insert a cassette, the exposed tape should be to the
right.
NOTICE
Do not oil any part of the cassette player, and do not insert anything except a cassette tape into the slot.
(e) Your automatic changer (with six CD changer only)

Your automatic changer can be store up to 6 CDs and play
selected CDs or continuously play all the CDs set in the player.
When you set CDs into the player, make sure their labels face
up. If not, the player will display ªERR 1º and the CD number.
NOTICE
Do not stack up two CDs for insertion, or it will cause
damage to the CD changer. Insert only one CD intoslot at a time.
Never try to disassemble or oil any part of the CDplayer. Do not insert anything other than CDs into theslot.
Do not insert a CD upon another one.
The player is intended for use with 12 cm (4.7 in.) CDs only.

212(b) Presetting a station

1. Tune in the desired station.
2. Push
one of the station selector buttons ( 1±6 ) and hold
it until a beep is heard. This sets the station to the button
and the button number ( 1±6 ) appears on the display.
Each button can store one AM station and two FM stations. To
change the preset station to a different one, follow the same
procedure.
The preset station memory is cancelled when the power
source is interrupted by battery disconnection or a blown fuse. (c) Selecting a station
Tune in the desired station using one of the following methods.

tuning: Push the button ( 1±6 ) for the station you want.
The button number ( 1±6 ) and station frequency appear on the
display.
Manual tuning: Turn the ªAUDIO CONTROLº knob clockwise
to step up the frequency. Turn the knob counterclockwise to
step down the frequency. (See page 211.)
Seek tuning: Push the ªSEEKº button. The radio will begin
seeking up or down for a station of the nearest frequency and
will stop on reception. Each time you push the button, the
stations will be searched automatically one after another.

This function is operative at any time. Under the ªFMº mode,
ªRDSº appears on the display as long as the audio system
picks up RDS stations. When the audio system is in other than
ªFMº mode, or it can not pick up RDS stations, ªRDSº is off.
TYPE (Program type):
When you push the ªTYPE
º or ªTYPE  º button while
receiving an RDS station, the current program type appears on
the display.
If you push the ªTYPE º or ªTYPE  º button when ªRDSº is
off on the display, ªNO_PTYº appears.
Each time you push the ªTYPE º or ªTYPE º button, the
program type changes as in the following:
 ROCK
 EASY LIS (Easy listening)
 CLS/JAZZ (Classical music and jazz)
 R&B (Rhythm and Blues)
 INFORM (Information)
 RELIGION
 MISC
 ALERT (Emergency message)
TRAF (Traffic) function: A station that regularly
broadcasts traffic information is automatically located.
When you push the ªTRAFº button in the ªFMº mode, ªTRAF
SEEKº appears on the display and the radio will start seeking
any traffic program station.
If no traf fic program station is found, ªNO TRAF INFOº appears
on the display for a few seconds and the display returns to the
previous mode.

number.
Push the button several times until the desired CD number
appears on the display. When you release the button, the
player will start playing the selected CD from the first track. (d) Searching for a desired track

Push the ªSCANº button briefly.
ªSCANº will appear on the display. The CD player will play the
next track for 10 seconds, then scan again. To select a track,
push the ªSCANº button a second time. If the player reaches
the end of the CD, it will continue scanning at track 1.
After all the tracks are scanned in one pass, normal play
resumes.

Push the ªSCANº button until you hear a beep.
With ªD´SCANº on the display, the program at the beginning of
each CD will be played for 10 seconds. To continue listening
to the program of your choice, push the ªSCANº button a
second time.
After all the CDs in the player are scanned in one pass, the
scan function is cancelled. (f) Selecting a desired track

ªTRACKº button: Use for direct access to a desired track.
Push either side of the ªTRACKº button several times until the
desired track number appears on the display. As you release
the button, the player will start playing the selected track from
the beginning.
ªFast forwardº button.
Push
the ª

º button and hold it to fast forward the CD. When
you release the button, the CD player will resume playing from
that position.
ªReverseº button.
Push the ª º button and hold it to reverse the CD. When you
release the button, the CD player will resume playing.

the entire emission control system operate properly,your vehicle must receive the periodic inspectionsrequired by the Lexus Maintenance Schedule . Forscheduled maintenance information, refer to theªOwner's Manual Supplement/ScheduledMaintenanceº.ENGINE EXHAUST CAUTION
CAUTION
 Avoid i nhaling the engine exhaust. It contains carbon
monoxide, which is a colorless and odorless gas. It
can cause unconsciousness or even death.
 Make sure the exhaust system has no holes or loose
connections. The system should be checked from
time to time. If you hit something, or notice a change
in the sound of the exhaust, have the system checked
immediately.
 Do not run the engine in a garage or enclosed area
except for the time needed to drive the vehicle in or
out. The exhaust gases cannot escape, making this
a particularly dangerous situation.
 Do not remain for a long time in a parked vehicle with
the engine running. If it is unavoidable, however, do
so only in an unconfined area and adjust the heating
or cooling system to force outside air into the vehicle.
 Keep the trunk lid or back door closed while driving.
An open or unsealed trunk lid or back door may
cause exhaust gases to be drawn into the vehicle.

3Shift into the ª2º position. The transmission will downshift
to second gear when the vehicle speed is or becomes
lower than the speed listed below and stronger engine
braking than that of ª3º position will be obtained.
4Shift into the ªLº position. The transmission will downshift
to first gear when the vehicle speed is or becomes lower
than the speed listed below and maximum engine braking
will be enabled.
ª4º 177 km/h (110 mph)
ª3º 123 km/h (76 mph)
ª2º 81 km/h (51 mph)
ªLº 17 km/h (11 mph)
CAUTION
Be careful when downshifting on a slippery surface. The
abrupt change in engine speed could cause the vehicle
to skid or spin.
(d) Using the ª3º, ª2º and ªLº positions
The ª3º, ª2º and ªLº positions are used for strong eng\
ine
braking as described previously.
With the selector lever in ª3º, ª2º or ªLº, you can start t\
he vehicle
in motion as with the lever in ªDº.
With the selector lever in ª3º or ª2º, the vehicle will star\
t in the
first gear and automatically shift to third or second gear.
With the selector lever in ªLº, the transmission is engaged in
the first gear.
NOTICE
Be careful not to over±rev the engine. Watch the tachometer to keep engine rpm from going into thered zone. The approximate maximum allowablespeed for each position is given below for yourreference:

Do not continue hill climbing or hard towing for a long
time in the ª3º, ª2º or ªLº position. This may causesevere automatic transmission damage from
