9. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE OIL PAN
SUB-ASSY
(a) Remove the 18 bolts, oil pan and gasket.
(b) Remove the 2 magnets from the oil pan.
10. INSPECT TRANSMISSION OIL CLEANER MAGNET
(a) Remove the magnets and use them to collect any steel
chips. Examine the chips and particles in the pan and on
the magnet to determine what type of wear has occurred
in the transaxle:
Steel (magnetic).... bearing, gear and plate wear
Brass (non-magnetic).... bushing wear
11. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION WIRE
(a) Remove the 7 connectors from the shift solenoid valves.
(b) Remove the bolt, lock plate and ATF temperature sensor.
12. REMOVE TRANSMISSION WIRE
(a) Remove the bolt and transmission wire from the transaxle
case.

REPLACEMENT
1. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER NO.1
2. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID
(a) Remove the drain plug, gasket, and drain ATF.
(b) Install a new gasket and drain plug.
Torque: 49 NVm (500 kgfVcm, 36 ftVlbf)
3. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE OIL PAN
SUB-ASSY
(a) Remove the 18 bolts, oil pan and gasket.
NOTICE:
Some fluid will remain in the oil pan. Remove all the pan
bolts, and carefully remove the oil pan assembly.
(b) Remove the 2 magnets from the oil pan.
(c) Examine particles in pan.
(1) Use the removed magnets to collect steel chips.
Look carefully at the chips and particles in the pan
and the magnet to anticipate the type of wear you
will find in the transaxle.
Steel (magnetic): bearing, gear and plate wear
Brass (non-magnetic): bearing wear
4. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION WIRE
(a) Disconnect the 7 shift solenoid valve connectors.
(b) Remove the bolt and lock plate, and disconnect the ATF
temperature sensor.

REPLACEMENT
1. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER NO.1

(2) Install the wear indicator to the 2 brake pads.
NOTICE:
When replacing worn pads, the anti squeal shims
must be replaced together with the pads.
Install the shims and pad wear indicator correctly of
which positions and directions.
(b) Install the anti squeal shim kit front (Twin piston Type).
(1) Apply the anti squeal shim with pad grease, and
install the anti squeal shim to each pad.
(2) Install the wear indicator to the 2 brake pads.
NOTICE:
When replacing worn pads, the anti squeal shims
must be replaced together with the pads.
Install the shims and pad wear indicator correctly of
which positions and directions.
38. INSTALL DISC BRAKE PAD KIT FRONT (PAD ONLY)
(a) Install the 2 disc brake pads with the pad wear indicator facing upward.
NOTICE:
There should be no oil or grease on the friction surface of the pads and the disc.
39. INSTALL DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSY LH
(a) Install the disc brake cylinder with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 34.3 NVm (350 kgfVcm, 25 ftVlbf)
40. CONNECT FRONT FLEXIBLE HOSE
(a) Connect a new gasket and flexible hose with the union bolt.
Torque: 29.4 NVm (300 kgfVcm, 22 ftVlbf)
HINT:
Install the flexible hose lock securely in the lock hold of the disc brake cylinder.
41. FILL RESERVOIR WITH BRAKE FLUID
42. BLEED MASTER CYLINDER (SEE PAGE 32-4)

(1) Using pliers, install the front axle inboard joint boot
LH clamp and front axle inboard joint boot LH No.2
clamp, as shown in the illustration.
35. INSPECT FRONT DRIVE SHAFT
NOTICE:
Move the drive shaft assy keeping it level.
(a) Check that there is no remarkable play in the radial direc-
tion of the outboard joint.
(b) Check that the inboard joint slides smoothly in the thrust
direction.
(c) Check that there is no remarkable play in the radial direc-
tion of the inboard joint.
(d) Check the boots for damage.
(e) Make sure that the 2 boots are on the shaft groove.
(f) Make sure that the 2 boots are not stretched or contracted
when the drive shaft is at standard length.
Drive shaft standard length: mm (in.)

36. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH
(a) Install a new front drive shaft LH hole snap ring.
(b) Coat the spline of the inboard joint shaft assy with ATF.
(c) Align the shaft splines and install the drive shaft assy with
a brass bar and hammer.
NOTICE:
Set the snap ring with the opening side facing down-
ward.
Be careful not to damage the oil seal, boot and dust
cover.
Move the drive shaft assy while keeping it level.

(c) Remove the bolt, disconnect the front flexible hose No. 1
and speed sensor front LH.
(d) Remove the 2 nuts and 2 bolts on the lower side of front
shock absorber with coil spring.
NOTICE:
When removing bolt, stop the bolt from rotating and loosen
the nut.
(e) Remove the 3 nuts on the upper side of the front shock
absorber with coil spring.
(f) Remove the front shock absorber with the coil spring.
NOTICE:
Be careful not to drop the 2 washers in the case that there
is front suspension upper brace center.
5. FIX FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER WITH COIL SPRING
(a) Install 2 nuts and a bolt to the bracket at the lower side of
the front shock absorber with coil spring and secure it in
a vise.
6. REMOVE SHOCK ABSORBER ASSY FRONT LH
(a) Using SST, compress the front coil spring LH.

NOTICE:
Do not use an impact wrench. It will damage the SST.
HINT:
Use 2 of the same type of SST.
(b) Remove the front suspension support sub-assy LH, front suspension support bearing LH, front coil
spring seat upper LH, front coil spring insulator upper LH, front coil spring LH, front spring bumper LH
and front coil spring insulator upper LH.

7. INSPECT SHOCK ABSORBER ASSY FRONT LH
(a) Compress and extend the shock absorber rod and check
that there is no abnormal resistance or unusual sound
during operation.
If there is any abnormality, replace the shock absorber assy
front LH with a new one.
NOTICE:
When disposing of the shock absorber assy front LH, see
DISPOSAL on page 26-13.
8. INSTALL SHOCK ABSORBER ASSY FRONT LH
(a) Install the front coil spring insulator lower LH onto the
shock absorber assy front LH.
(b) Install the front spring bumper LH to the piston rod.
(c) Using SST, compress the front coil spring LH.

NOTICE:
Do not use an impact wrench. It will damage the SST.
HINT:
Use 2 of the same type of SST.
(d) Install the front coil spring LH to the shock absorber assy
front LH.
HINT:
Fit the lower end of the front coil spring LH into the gap of the
spring lower seat.
(e) Install the front coil spring insulator upper LH as shown in
the illustration.
(f) Install the front coil spring seat upper LH to the shock ab-
sorber assy front LH with the mark facing to the outside
of the vehicle.
