Checking the Air Conditioning Operation
1. Start the engine and let it run at
fast idle for several minutes with the air conditioning set at the maxi- mum cold setting.
2. If the air coming out of the in-dash vents is not cold, have the air con-ditioning system inspected by yourHyundai dealer.
CAUTION:
Running the air conditioning sys-
tem for extended periods of timewith a low refrigerant level may damage the compressor.

Lubrication
To lubricate the compressor and the
seals in the system, the air condition- ing should be run for at least 10 minutes each week. This is particu- larly important during cool weatherwhen the air conditioning system is not otherwise in use. G140D01HP-GAT
Checking the Compressor Drive Belt
When the air conditioning is being used regularly, the compressor drive belt tension should be checked at least once a month. To check the drive belt tension, pressdown on the belt halfway between theengine crankshaft and compressor pulleys. Pressing with your finger, you should not be able to deflect this beltanymore than 8.0 mm. If you have the instruments to check it with a force of 98N (22 lb.), the deflectionshould be approx. 8.0 mm (0.315 inches). If the belt is too loose, have it adjusted by your Hyundai dealer.

29CHECKING DRIVE BELTSCHECKING BRAKE PEDAL CLEARANCE
G180A01A-GAT
You need a helper to check the brake pedal clearance. With the engine run- ning, have your helper press down onthe brake pedal several times and then hold it down with a force of about 490N (50 kg, 110 lbs). The brakepedal clearance is the distance from the top surface of the brake pedal to the asphalt sheeting under the floormat. If the brake pedal clearance is not within the limits specified in the illustration, have it inspected by yourHyundai dealer and adjusted or re- paired if necessary. 71 mm (2.80 in.)

Drive belts should be checked peri-odically for proper tension and ad- justed if necessary. At the same time, belts should be examined for cracks, wear, fraying or other evidence of deterioration and replaced if neces-sary.Belt routing should also be checkedto be sure there is no interference between the belts and other parts of the engine. After a belt is replaced, the new belt should be adjusted again after two or three weeks to eliminate slack resulting from initial stretchingafter use. HHP5049

SG140D1-E Off Season Maintenance The air conditioning must be run for ten minutes or so weekly during peri- ods when the system would not nor- mally be used to ensure that thecompressor and seals are lubricated. If this precaution is not observed the compressor seals may become stuckto the compressor shaft and dam- aged when the system is next used resulting in a loss of refrigerant anddamage to the compressor. HPG140B1-E
Compressor Drive Belt The air conditioning compressor drive
belt should be checked to ensurefreedom from damage or excessive wear and correct tension. The belt tension is correct when the belt de-flects by about 0.3 inches (8 mm) when a force of 98 N is applied to the belt halfway between the compressorand crankshaft pulleys. Adjustment of the belt should be entrusted to a Hyundai dealer.
NOTE: The compressor drive belt tension
for diesel engine is adjusted auto- matically.

CHECKING ENGINE DRIVE BELTS
YG200A1-E
1. With the engine turned off, check the belts for cracks, fraying, or excessive wear. Replace the belt ifit is in poor condition.
2. With your thumb (with a force
approx. 10 kg) press on each beltmidway between the pulleys. Each belt should deflect no more than the amount shown in figure.
