2 DRIVING YOUR HYUNDAI
18
C160B01A-GAT Snowy or Icy Conditions To drive your vehicle in deep snow, it may be necessary to use snow tires orto install tire chains on your tires. If snow tires are needed, it is necessary to select tires equivalent in size andtype to the original equipment tires. Failure to do so may adversely affect the safety and handling of your car.Speeding, rapid acceleration, sudden brake applications, and sharp turns are potentially very hazardous prac-tices. During deceleration, use engine braking to the fullest extent. Sudden brake applications on snowy or icyroads may cause skids to occur. You need to keep sufficient distance be- tween the vehicle in front and yourvehicle. Also, apply the brake gently. It should be noted that installing tire chains on the tire will provide a greaterdriving force, but will not prevent side skids. NOTE: Tire chains are not legal in all prov- inces. Check province laws before fitting tire chains. C160C01A-AAT Use High Quality Ethylene Gly- col Coolant Your Hyundai is delivered with high quality ethylene glycol coolant in thecooling system. It is the only type of coolant that should be used because it helps prevent corrosion in the coolingsystem, lubricates the water pump and prevents freezing. Be sure to replace or replenish your coolant in accor-dance with the maintenance schedule in Section 5. Before winter, have your coolant tested to assure that its freez-ing point is sufficient for the tempera- tures anticipated during the winter. C160D01F-AAT Check Battery and Cables Winter puts additional burdens on the battery system. Visually inspect the battery and cables as described in Section 6 (See page 6-30). The level ofcharge in your battery can be checked by your Hyundai dealer or a service station. C160E01A-AAT Change to "Winter Weight" Oil if Necessary In some climates it is recommended that a lower viscosity "winter weight"oil be used during cold weather. See Section 9 for recommendations. If you aren't sure what weight oil you shoulduse, consult your Hyundai dealer. C160F01F-GAT Check Spark Plugs and Ignition System Inspect your spark plugs as described in Section 6 (See page 6-12) and re- place them if necessary. Also checkall ignition wiring and components to be sure they are not cracked, worn or damaged in any way.

8CHANGING THE OIL AND FIL- TER
G040A04GK-GAT
o The engine oil consumption is
strongly effected by the viscosity and quality of oil, engine rpm and driving condition etc. More engine oil may be consumed under severedriving conditions such as high speeds, frequent acceleration and deceleration, compared to normaldriving condition.

The engine oil and filter should be
changed at those intervals specifiedin the maintenance schedule in Sec- tion 5. If the car is being driven in severe conditions, more frequent oiland filter changes are required.
The procedure for changing the oil
and filter is as follows:
1. Park the car on level ground and
set the parking brake. Start the engine and let it warm up until the needle on the coolant temperature gauge moves above the lowestmark. Turn the engine off and place the gear selector lever in "P" (auto-

SG030A1-E The correct engine oil level is of para-
mount importance. An excessively high or low oil level may result inirreparable damage being sustained by the engine. The engine oil level must be checked on a daily basis orwhenever the vehicle is refuelled, whichever occurs sooner.
In addition, it is imperative that only
an approved grade and specificationof oil is used to avoid the possibility of serious engine damage and prema-ture wear. The use of "budget price" oil is a false economy that must be avoided if the maximum reliability anduseful life is to be obtained from the vehicle.
SG020B1-E The following items should be checked on a daily basis or whenever the vehicle is refuelled, whichever occurssooner.
o Engine oil level.
o Engine coolant level.
o Power steering fluid level.
o Brake fluid level.
o Windscreen washer fluid level.
o Battery condition.
o Tyre condition and pressures.
o Operation and cleanliness of all lighting equip-ment.
o Windscreen wiper and washer op-
eration.
o Horn operation.
o Warning lamp operation.
o Adjustment and cleanliness of mir- rors.
o Seat and seat belt adjustment and operation.
o Fluid leakage.
The vehicle must not be driven if the daily operating checks indicate that any item of equipment related to the safety or roadworthiness of the ve-hicle is not functioning correctly. DAILY OPERATING CHECKS
G030B02O-EAT Recommended Oil
1. Petrol Engine The engine oil quality should meet the following classification. API SJ, SL or ABOVE, ILSAC GF-3 or ABOVE The oil viscosity should be selected according to the operating environ- ment of the engine by means of thetable shown above. The engine oil recommendations are complete in themselves and the use of additivesis neither required nor recommended. The use of engine oil additives may result in invalidation of the vehiclewarranty.

The engine oil and filter must be
changed at the time or mileage inter-val specified in the maintenance schedule. If the vehicle is operated under severe or adverse conditions, the oil and filter must be replaced more frequently.
To replace the oil and filter, proceed
as follows:
1. Ensure that the engine is at normal
operating temperature and park the vehicle on level ground with the parking brake securely ap-plied and the engine turned off.
2. Open the bonnet and remove the oil filler cap.
