readiness light on the
instrument panel cluster,
which shows the airbag
symbol.
The system checks the airbag electrical system for
malfunctions. The light tells you if there is an electrical

for more information.Where Are the Airbags?
The driver’s frontal airbag is in the middle of the
steering wheel.

If your vehicle has a side impact airbag for the right
front passenger, it is in the side of the passenger’s
seatback closest to the door.
{CAUTION:
If something is between an occupant and an
airbag, the airbag might not inate properly or
it might force the object into that person
causing severe injury or even death. The path
of an inating airbag must be kept clear. Do
not put anything between an occupant and an
airbag, and do not attach or put anything on
the steering wheel hub or on or near any other
airbag covering. Do not let seat covers block
the ination path of a side impact airbag.

What Makes an Airbag Inate?
In an impact of sufficient severity, the airbag sensing
system detects that the vehicle is in a crash. For
both frontal and side impact airbags, the sensing system
triggers a release of gas from the inator, which
inates the airbag. The inator, the airbag and related
hardware are all part of the airbag modules inside
the steering wheel, the instrument panel, and the side of
the front seatbacks closest to the door.
How Does an Airbag Restrain?
In moderate to severe frontal or near frontal collisions,
even belted occupants can contact the steering wheel or
the instrument panel. In moderate to severe side
collisions, even belted occupants can contact the inside
of the vehicle. Airbags supplement the protection
provided by safety belts. Airbags distribute the force of
the impact more evenly over the occupant’s upper
body, stopping the occupant more gradually. But
a frontal airbag would not help you in many types of
collisions, including rollovers, rear impacts, and
many side impacts, primarily because an occupant’s
motion is not toward a frontal airbag.A side impact airbag would not help you in many types
of collisions, including frontal or near frontal collisions,
rollovers, and rear impacts, primarily because an
occupant’s motion is not toward a side airbag. Airbags
should never be regarded as anything more than a
supplement to safety belts, and then only in moderate to
severe frontal or near-frontal collisions for frontal
airbags, and only in moderate to severe side collisions
for side impact airbags.
What Will You See After an Airbag
Inates?
After the airbag inates, it quickly deates, so quickly
that some people may not even realize the airbag
inated. Some components of the airbag module will be
hot for a short time. These components include the
steering wheel hub for the driver’s frontal airbag and the
instrument panel for the passenger’s frontal airbag.
For vehicles with side impact airbags, the side of the
seatback closest to the driver’s and/or passenger’s door
will be hot. The parts of the bag that come into
contact with you may be warm, but not too hot to touch.
There will be some smoke and dust coming from the
vents in the deated airbags. Airbag ination does
not prevent the driver from seeing or being able to steer
the vehicle, nor does it stop people from leaving the
vehicle.

{CAUTION:
When an airbag inates, there is dust in the
air. This dust could cause breathing problems
for people with a history of asthma or other
breathing trouble. To avoid this, everyone in
the vehicle should get out as soon as it is safe
to do so. If you have breathing problems but
cannot get out of the vehicle after an airbag
inates, then get fresh air by opening a
window or a door. If you experience breathing
problems following an airbag deployment, you
should seek medical attention.
In many crashes severe enough to inate an airbag,
windshields are broken by vehicle deformation.Additional windshield breakage may also occur from the
passenger’s airbag.
Airbags are designed to inate only once. After an
airbag inates, you will need some new parts for
your airbag system. If you do not get them,
the airbag system will not be there to help protect
you in another crash. A new system will include
airbag modules and possibly other parts. The
service manual for your vehicle covers the need to
replace other parts.
Your vehicle is equipped with a crash sensing and
diagnostic module which records information after
a crash. SeeVehicle Data Collection and Event
Data Recorders on page 7-8.
Let only qualied technicians work on your airbag
system. Improper service can mean that an
airbag system will not work properly. See your
dealer for service.
Notice:If you damage the covering for the driver’s
or the passenger’s airbag, or the airbag covering
on the driver’s and passenger’s seatback, the airbag
may not work properly. You may have to replace
the airbag module in the steering wheel, both
the airbag module and the instrument panel for the
passenger’s airbag, or both the airbag module
and seatback for the driver’s and passenger’s side
impact airbag. Do not open or break the airbag
coverings.

Hatch/Trunk
{CAUTION:
It can be dangerous to drive with the
hatch/trunk lid open because carbon
monoxide (CO) gas can come into your
vehicle. You can not see or smell CO. It can
cause unconsciousness and even death. If you
must drive with the hatch/trunk lid open or if
electrical wiring or other cable connections
must pass through the seal between the body
and the hatch/trunk lid:
Make sure all other windows are shut.
Turn the fan on your heating or cooling
system to its highest speed and select the
control setting that will force outside air
into your vehicle. SeeDual Automatic
Climate Control System on page 3-25.
If you have air outlets on or under the
instrument panel, open them all the way.
SeeEngine Exhaust on page 2-33.Notice:Closing the hatch/trunk lid forcefully or
from the sides can cause damage to the glass, the
defogger or the weather stripping. Be sure objects
will t in the hatch/trunk area before closing the
hatch/trunk lid. When closing the hatch/trunk
lid, gently pull down from the center.
Notice:Do not store heavy or sharp objects in the
rear storage compartments located in the
hatch/trunk area. If you do, the objects could
damage the underbody.
Hatch/Trunk Lid Release
There are several ways to release the hatch/trunk lid. If
your vehicle has an automatic transmission, the shift
lever must be in PARK (P). For manual transmissions,
the parking brake must be set. SeeParking Brake

V(Hatch/Trunk):Press the hatch/trunk lid
release button located on the instrument panel
to the left of the steering wheel.
}(Hatch/Trunk):Press the hatch/trunk lid
release button on the keyless access transmitter.

Press the hatch/trunk release button located on the
rear of the hatch/trunk lid above the license plate,
as long as you have your transmitter with you.

Lowering the Power Convertible Top
1. Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
The vehicle must be running or in ACC. Shift an
automatic transmission into PARK (P). Shift a
manual transmission into NEUTRAL.
2. Make sure the trunk is closed and that the trunk
partition in the rear storage area is in the fastened,
upright position, and that no objects are forward
of the divider.
3. Release the convertible top front latch, located
above the inside rearview mirror, by pulling and
turning it clockwise toward the driver’s door.
The windows will automatically lower.4. Push and hold the
bottom of the power
convertible top button,
located to the left of
the steering wheel, on
the instrument
panel.
The windows will automatically lower and the convertible
top will lower into the rear of the vehicle. A chime will
sound when the convertible top has lowered completely.
If the radio is on the sound may be muted for a brief time.
If the convertible top is operated multiple times, the
engine should be running to prevent drain on the
vehicle’s battery. Under certain conditions, the Driver
Information Center (DIC) may display a message
regarding the power convertible top. SeeDIC Warnings

Hazard Warning Flashers
Your hazard warning ashers let you warn others. They
also let police know you have a problem. Your front
and rear turn signal lamps will ash on and off.
The hazard warning
asher button is located
near the center of the
instrument panel.
Your hazard warning ashers work no matter what
mode the ignition is in, even if the ignition is turned off.Press the button to make the front and rear turn signal
lamps ash on and off. Press the button again to
turn the ashers off.
When the hazard warning ashers are on, your turn
signals will not work.
Other Warning Devices
If you carry reective triangles, you can set them up at
the side of the road about 300 feet (100 m) behind
your vehicle.
Horn
Press near or on the horn symbols on your steering
wheel pad to sound the horn.

Tilt Wheel
A tilt wheel allows you to adjust the steering wheel
before you drive. You can raise it to the highest level to
give your legs more room when you exit and enter
the vehicle.
The lever that allows you to tilt the steering wheel is
located on the left side of the steering column.
To tilt the wheel, hold the steering wheel and pull the
lever toward you. Then move the wheel to a comfortable
position and release the lever to lock the wheel in
place.
Telescopic Steering Column
If your vehicle has this feature, the telescopic steering
column will allow you to adjust the distance the steering
wheel is from the instrument panel.
The telescopic steering
column switch is located
on the right side of
the steering column.
To operate the telescopic steering column, push the
switch forward and the wheel will move away from you.
Pull the switch rearward and the wheel will move
toward you.
The telescopic steering column position can be stored
with your memory settings. SeeMemory on page 2-68
for more information.
