If a door or the trunk is opened without a key or a
remote keyless entry transmitter, the horn will sound
and the lamps will ash for about 30 seconds.
Remember, the theft-deterrent system will not arm if you
lock the doors with a key or use the manual door
lock. It activates only if you use a power door lock with
the door open or the remote keyless entry transmitter.
To avoid activating the alarm by accident do the
following:
The vehicle should be locked with the door key or
the manual door lock after the doors are closed if
you do not want to arm the theft-deterrent system.
Always unlock a door with a key or use the remote
keyless entry transmitter system. Pressing the
unlock button on the remote keyless entry
transmitter disables the theft-deterrent system.
Unlocking a door any other way will activate
the alarm when a door or the trunk is opened.
If you activate the alarm by accident, unlock the driver’s
door with your key. You can also turn off the alarm by
using the unlock button on the remote keyless entry
transmitter system, or by starting the car with a valid key.
Changes or modications made to this system by other
than an authorized service facility could void
authorization to use the theft system.
Testing the Alarm
1. From inside the vehicle, roll down the window, then
get out of the vehicle, keeping the door open.
2. From outside of the vehicle, with the door open,
lock the vehicle using the power door lock or the
remote keyless entry system and close the
door. Wait 30 seconds until the SECURITY lamp
goes off.
3. Reach in and unlock the door using the manual
lock and open the door. The horn will sound and
the hazard lights will ash.
You can turn off the alarm by unlocking the driver’s door
with your key, using the unlock button on the remote
keyless entry transmitter or by starting the car with
a valid key.
If the alarm does not sound when it should, check to
see if the horn works. The horn fuse may be blown.
To replace the fuse, seeFuses and Circuit Breakers on
page 5-98. If the fuse does not need to be replaced,
you may need to have your vehicle serviced.
To reduce the possibility of theft, always arm the
theft-deterrent system when leaving your vehicle.

A (OFF):This is the only position in which you can
insert or remove the key. This position locks the ignition
and transaxle. It is a theft-deterrent feature.
B (ACCESSORY):This position allows you to use
things like the radio and the windshield wipers when the
engine is off. This position will allow you to turn off
the engine. If your vehicle has a column shifter, you will
still be able to move the shift lever. Use ACCESSORY
if you must have your vehicle in motion while the engine
is off, for example, if your vehicle is being pushed
or towed.
C (ON):This position is for driving. If your vehicle
has a console shifter and you turn off the engine,
the transaxle will lock. If you need to shift the transaxle
out of PARK (P), the ignition key has to be in ON.
D (START):This position starts the engine.Retained Accessory Power (RAP)
The following accessories on your vehicle may be used
for up to 10 minutes after the ignition key is turned
from ON to OFF:
Cellular Telephone
Radio
Power Windows
Audio Steering Wheel Controls
Sunroof
Power to these accessories stops after 10 minutes or
if a door is opened. If you want power for another
10 minutes, close all the doors and turn the ignition key
to ON and then back to OFF. If the cellular phone is
being used while retained accessory power is active,
the timer is suspended to avoid interruption of the call.
The timer resets to 10 minutes at the end of the call.

Parking Over Things That Burn
{CAUTION:
Things that can burn could touch hot exhaust
parts under your vehicle and ignite. Do not
park over papers, leaves, dry grass or other
things that can burn.
Engine Exhaust
{CAUTION:
Engine exhaust can kill. It contains the gas
carbon monoxide (CO), which you cannot see or
smell. It can cause unconsciousness and death.
You might have exhaust coming in if:
Your exhaust system sounds strange or
different.
Your vehicle gets rusty underneath.
Your vehicle was damaged in a collision.
Your vehicle was damaged when driving
over high points on the road or over
road debris.
Repairs were not done correctly.
Your vehicle or exhaust system had been
modied improperly.
If you ever suspect exhaust is coming into your
vehicle:
Drive it only with all the windows down to
blow out any CO; and
Have your vehicle xed immediately.

Automatic Dimming Rearview Mirror
with OnStar
®and Compass
Your vehicle may have an automatic dimming rearview
mirror with a compass display. The mirror also
contains OnStar
®controls. For more information see
OnStar®System on page 2-42.
The automatic dimming feature functions the same as
that of the automatic dimming rearview mirror without a
compass. SeeAutomatic Dimming Rearview Mirror
with OnStar
®on page 2-37.
The mirror also includes an eight-point compass display
in the upper right corner of the mirror face. When on,
the compass automatically calibrates as the vehicle
is driven.
Mirror Operation
O
(On/Off):Press and hold the button, located on the
lower left side of the mirror face, for about three seconds
to turn the automatic dimming feature on or off.
The indicator light will illuminate when this feature is
active. The automatic dimming feature is active each time
the vehicle is started.
Compass Operation
Press the on/off button once to turn the compass
on or off.
When the ignition and the compass feature are on,
the compass will show two character boxes for about
two seconds. After two seconds, the mirror will display
the compass heading.
Compass Calibration
If after two seconds, the display does not show a
compass heading (for example, N for North), there may
be a strong magnetic eld interfering with the compass.
Such interference may be caused by a magnetic antenna
mount, magnetic note pad holder or a similar magnetic
item. If the letter C should ever appear in the compass
window, the compass may need calibration.
The mirror can be calibrated by driving the vehicle in
circles at 5 mph (8 km/h) or less until the display reads
a direction.
The compass can be placed in calibration mode
manually by pressing and holding the on/off button
untilaCisshown in the compass display.

Compass Variance
The zone is set to zone eight upon leaving the factory.
It will be necessary to adjust the compass to
compensate for compass variance if you live outside
zone eight. Under certain circumstances, as during
a long distance cross-country trip, it will be necessary to
adjust for compass variance. Compass variance is
the difference between earth’s magnetic north and true
geographic north. If not adjusted to account for
compass variance, your compass could give false
readings.
To adjust for compass variance do the following:
1. Find the current location and variance zone number
on the following zone map.
2. Press and hold the on/off button until a zone
number appears in the display.
3. Once the zone number appears in the display,
press the on/off button quickly until the correct
zone number appears in the display. Stop pressing
the button and the mirror will return to normal
operation. If C appears in the compass window, the
compass may need calibration. SeeCompass

Outside Automatic Dimming Mirror
If the vehicle is equipped with this feature, the driver’s
side mirror will adjust for the glare of headlamps behind
you. This feature is controlled by the on and off
settings on the automatic dimming rearview mirror.

Outside Curb View Assist Mirror
If your vehicle is equipped with memory mirrors, it will
also be capable of performing the curb view assist mirror
feature. This feature will allow the passenger’s side
mirror to tilt to a factory programmed position when the
vehicle is in REVERSE (R). This feature may be
useful in allowing you to view the curb when you are
parallel parking.
When the vehicle is shifted out of REVERSE (R) and
a ve-second delay has occurred, the passenger’s side
mirror will return to its original position.
If further adjustment is needed after the mirror is tilted,
the mirror switch may be used.
This feature can be enabled/disabled through the
Driver Information Center (DIC). SeeDIC Vehicle
Personalization on page 3-68for more information.
Outside Convex Mirror
{CAUTION:
A convex mirror can make things (like other
vehicles) look farther away than they really are.
If you cut too sharply into the right lane, you
could hit a vehicle on your right. Check your
inside mirror or glance over your shoulder
before changing lanes.
The passenger’s side mirror is convex. A convex mirror’s
surface is curved so more can be seen from the
driver’s seat. This mirror does not have a dimming
feature.
Outside Heated Mirrors
When you operate the rear window defogger, it also
warms both outside mirrors to help clear them of fog or
ice. SeeDual Climate Control System on page 3-30
for more information.

Battery Load Management
The battery load management feature is designed to
monitor the vehicle’s electrical load and determine when
the battery is in a heavy discharge condition. During
times of high electrical loading, the engine may idle at a
higher revolutions per minute (rpm) setting than
normal to make sure the battery charges. High electrical
loads may occur when several of the following are
on: headlamps, high beams, fog lamps, rear window
defogger, the climate control fan at high speeds, heated
seats and engine cooling fans.
If the battery continues to discharge, even with the
engine idling at a higher rpm setting, some electrical
loads will automatically be reduced. When this occurs,
the rear window defogger may take slightly longer
to clear the glass, the heated seats may not get as warm
as they usually do and the fan may cut back to a
lower speed. For more battery saving information, see
“Battery Saver Active Message” underDIC Warnings
and Messages on page 3-60.
Inadvertent Power Battery Saver
This feature is designed to protect your vehicle’s battery
against drainage from the interior lamps, trunk lamp,
glove box lamp, or the garage door opener. When the
ignition is turned off, the power to these features will
automatically turn off after 10 minutes (three minutes if
a new car has 15 miles (24 km) or less). Power will
be restored for an additional 10 minutes if any door is
opened, the trunk is opened or the courtesy lamp switch
is turned on.
Night Vision System
If your vehicle is equipped with the Night Vision System,
it can help you see better when you drive at night.
The system works by sensing heat given off by objects
in its eld of view. Warmer objects, such as pedestrians,
animals, and other moving vehicles, will appear
whiter. Colder objects, such as the sky, signs, and
parked vehicles, will appear darker.

The URPA display is
located inside the vehicle,
above the rear window.
It has three color-coded
lights that can be seen
through the rearview mirror
or by turning around.
How the System Works
URPA comes on automatically when the shift lever is
moved into REVERSE (R). When the system comes on,
the three lights on the display will briey illuminate to
let you know that the system is working. If your vehicle is
moving in REVERSE (R) at a speed greater than
3 mph (5 km/h), the red light will ash to remind you the
system does not work at this speed.
The rst time an object is detected while in REVERSE (R),
a chime will sound and the following will occur in
sequence, depending on the distance from the object:
At 5 feet (1.5 m) a chime will sound and one amber
light will be lit;
at 40 inches (1.0 m) both amber lights will be lit;
at 20 inches (0.5 m) a continuous chime will sound
and all three lights (amber/amber/red) will be lit; and
at 1 foot (0.3 m) a continuous chime will sound and
all three lights (amber/amber/red) will ash.
URPA can detect objects 3 inches (7.6 cm) and wider,
and at least 10 inches (25.4 cm) tall, but it cannot detect
objects that are above trunk level. In order for the
rear sensors to recognize an object, it must be within
operating range.
If the URPA system is not functioning properly, the
display will ash red, indicating that there is a problem.
The light will also ash red while driving if a trailer is
attached to your vehicle, or a bicycle or object is on the
back of, or hanging out of your trunk. The light will
continue to ash until the trailer or the object is
removed and your vehicle is driven forward at least
15 mph (25 km/h).
