(d) Engine Oil Replacement Reminder
Light
This light reminds you when to replace
the engine oil.
This light will come on when the ignition
key is turned to the “ON” position, and
will go off after a few seconds.
When you drive for about 8000 km (5000
miles) after the engine oil replacement,
this light illuminates for about 3 seconds
and then flashes for about 12 seconds
after the ignition key is turned to the “ON”
position. If you continue driving without
engine oil replacement, and if the driving
range exceeds 12000 km (7500 miles), the
light will come on when the ignition key
is turned to the “ON” position. The light
will remain on thereafter.
If the light is flashing, we recommend that
you replace the engine oil at an early
opportunity depending on the driving and
road conditions. If the light comes on,
replace it as soon as possible.
The system must be reset after the en-
gine oil replacement. Reset the system by
following the procedure below:
1. Turn the ignition key to the “OFF” posi-
tion with the odometer reading shown.
(For details, see “Odometer and two
trip meters” on page 77.)2. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” posi-
tion while holding down the trip meter
reset knob.
Hold down the knob for at least 5 sec-
onds. The light goes off, and the display
shows zero for 1 second and changes to
the odometer reading.
If the system fails to reset, the light will
remain on or keep flashing.
(e) Discharge Warning Light
This light warns that the battery is being
discharged.
If it comes on while you are driving, there
is a problem somewhere in the charging
system.
The engine ignition will continue to oper-
ate, however, until the battery is dis-
charged. Turn off the air conditioning,
blower, radio, etc., and drive directly to
the nearest Scion dealer or repair shop.
NOTICE
Do not continue driving if the engine
drive belt is broken or loose.
(f) Malfunction Indicator Lamp
This lamp comes on when the ignition
key is turned to the “ON” position and
goes off after the engine starts. This
means that the warning light system is
operating properly.
If the lamp remains on, first check the
following.
Empty fuel tank
If the fuel tank is empty, refuel immedi-
ately.
Loose fuel tank cap
If the fuel tank cap is loose, securely
tighten it.
These cases are temporary malfunctions.
The malfunction indicator lamp will go off
after taking several driving trips.
If the lamp will not go off even after
the several trips...
or
If the fuel tank is not empty or the fuel
tank cap is not loose...
There is a problem somewhere in the
engine, emission control system, auto-
matic transmission electrical system or
warning light system itself.
Contact your Scion dealer as soon as
possible to service the vehicle.

As an example, if a vehicle is used for re-
peated short trips, and consumes a normal
amount of oil, the dipstick may not show any
drop in the oil level at all, even after 1000
km (600 miles) or more. This is because the
oil is gradually becoming diluted with fuel or
moisture, making it appear that the oil level
has not changed.
The diluting ingredients evaporate out when
the vehicle is then driven at high speeds, as
on an express way, making it appear that oil
is excessively consumed after driving at high
speeds.
IMPORTANCE OF ENGINE OIL LEVEL
CHECK
One of the most important points in proper
vehicle maintenance is to keep the engine oil
at the optimum level so that oil function will
not be impaired. Therefore, it is essential that
the oil level be checked regularly. Scion rec-
ommends that the oil level be checked every
time you refuel the vehicle.
NOTICE
Failure to check the oil level regularly
could lead to serious engine trouble
due to insufficient oil.
For detailed information on oil level check,
see “Checking the engine oil level” on page
186.
Brake system
The tandem master cylinder brake system is
a hydraulic system with two separate sub
systems. If either subsystem should fail, the
other will still work. However, the pedal will
be harder to press, and your stopping dis-
tance will increase. Also, the brake system
warning light may come on.
CAUTION
Do not drive your vehicle with only a
single brake system. Have your
brakes fixed immediately.
BRAKE BOOSTER
The brake booster uses engine vacuum to
powerassist the brakes. If the engine should
quit while you are driving, you can bring the
vehicle to a stop with normal pedal pressure.
There is enough reserved vacuum for one or
two stops but no more!

Exhaust system
If you notice any change in the sound of
the exhaust or smell exhaust fumes, have
the cause located and corrected immedi-
ately. (See “Engine exhaust cautions” on
page 115.)
INSIDE THE VEHICLE
Items listed below should be checked
regularly, e.g. while performing periodic
services, cleaning the vehicle, etc.
Lights
Make sure the headlights, stop lights, tail
lights, turn signal lights, and other lights
are all working. Check headlight aim.
Service reminder indicators and warning
buzzers
Check that all service reminder indicators
and warning buzzers function properly.
Steering wheel
Check that it has specified free play. Be
alert for changes in steering condition,
such as hard steering or strange noise.Seats
Check that all front seat controls such as
seat adjusters, seatback recliner, etc. op-
erate smoothly and that all latches lock
securely in any position. Check that the
head restraints move up and down
smoothly and that the locks hold securely
in any latched position. For folding−down
rear seatbacks, check that the latches
lock securely.
Seat belts
Check that the seat belt system such as
buckles, retractors and anchors operate
properly and smoothly. Make sure the belt
webbing is not cut, frayed, worn or dam-
aged.
Accelerator pedal
Check the pedal for smooth operation and
uneven pedal effort or catching.
Clutch pedal
Check the pedal for smooth operation.
Brake pedal
Check the pedal for smooth operation and
that the pedal has the proper clearance.
Check the brake booster function.
Brakes
At a safe place, check that the brakes do
not pull to one side when applied.Parking brake
Check that the lever has the proper travel
and that, on a safe incline, your vehicle
is held securely with only the parking
brake applied.
Automatic transmission “Park” mecha-
nism
Check the lock release button of the se-
lector lever for proper and smooth opera-
tion. On a safe incline, check that your
vehicle is held securely with the selector
lever in “P” position and all brakes re-
leased.
OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE
Items listed below should be performed
from time to time, unless otherwise
specified.
Fluid leaks
Check underneath for leaking fuel, oil, water
or other fluid after the vehicle has been
parked for a while. If you smell fuel fumes
or notice any leak, have the cause found and
corrected immediately.
Doors and engine hood
Check that all the side doors and back
door operate smoothly and all latches lock
securely. Make sure the engine hood sec-
ondary latch secures the hood from open-
ing when the primary latch is released.

ENGINE OIL SELECTION
“Genuine Motor Oil” is filled in your Scion
vehicle. Use Scion approved “Genuine Mo-
tor Oil” or equivalent to satisfy the follow-
ing grade and viscosity.
Oil grade:
API grade SL “Energy−Conserving” or
ILSAC multigrade engine oil.
Recommended viscosity:
SAE 5W−30
OIL008
Outside temperatureSAE 5W30 is the best choice for good
fuel economy, and good starting in cold
weather.
If SAE 5W30 oil is not available, SAE
