The front moonroof has a tilting function and the rear
moonroof has a sliding function.
Both moonroofs operate only when the ignition switch
is in the “ON” position.
1) Open
2) Close
To open the moonroof(s)
1. Open the front sunshade.
2. Continually push the rear side (OPEN) of the
switch, and the front moonroof will tilt up and stop au-tomatically.
3. If you want to open the rear moonroof as well, re-
lease the switch once and then push the rear side of the switch continuously.
The rear moonroof will begin to slide open together
with the rear sunshade, then stop automatically at 7.9
in (20 cm) in a partially open position.
4. To fully open it, release the switch once, then push
the rear side of the switch again and keep it depressed
until the full open position is reached.
To close the moonroof(s)
1. Push the front side (CLOSE) of the switch. The rear
moonroof will slide to close together with the rear sun-
shade while the switch is being pressed, then stop au-
tomatically at a position 5.9 in (15 cm) away from the
fully closed position.
2. To close the rear moonroof fully, release the switch
once, then push the front side of the switch continu-
ously again.
3. If you want to close the front moonroof as well,
push the switch again.
After washing the vehicle or after it rains, wipe away
water on the roof prior to opening the moonroof to pre-
vent water drops from falling into the passenger’s compartment.
NOTE y
Driving with the moonroof fully open can cause
a great deal of wind noise. If such a condition has
been encountered, close the moonroof up to the

Precautions to observe when han-
dling a compact disc (CD)
Use only compact discs (CDs) that have the mark
shown below. CD-RWs cannot be used. Also, some
CD-Rs cannot be played. y
In cold and/or rainy weather, dew can form inside
the CD player, preventing normal operation. If this
happens, eject the CD and wait for the player to dry
out. y Skipping may occur when the CD player is subject-
ed to severe vibration (for example, when the vehicle
is driven on a rough surface). y
To remove a disc from the case, press the center of
the case and hold both edges of the disc. If the disc
surface is touched directly, contamination could cause
poor tone quality. Do not touch the disc surface. y Use a clean disc whenever possible. If there are de-
posits, wipe the disc surface from the center outward
with a dry, soft cloth. Be sure not to use a hard cloth,
thinner, benzene, alcohol, etc.y Do not use any disc that is scratched, deformed, or
cracked. Also, do not use any disc that has a non-stan-
dard shape (for example, a heart shape). Malfunctions
or problems might result. y A disc is vulnerable to heat. Never keep it either in
places exposed to direct sunlight, near heaters or in
vehicles parked in the sun or hot days.

OnStar system limitations
Complete limitations can be found on the Subscriber
Services Agreement at www.onstar.com

An OnStar Service Subscription Agreement is re-
quired in order to receive OnStar services, including
OnStar Personal Calling and OnStar Virtual Advisor.
OnStar services require vehicle electrical system and
wireless service to be available and operating for fea-
tures to function properly. OnStar uses existing emer-
gency service providers as well as wireless and satel-
lite technologies.
In order to provide you with excellent service, calls
with the OnStar Center may be monitored or recorded. OnStar Service is: y available in the 48 contiguous United States, Alas-
ka, Hawaii; y available when the vehicle is within the operating
range of a cellular provider;y subject to limitations caused by atmospheric condi-
tions, such as severe weather or topographical condi-
tions, such as mountainous terrain; y subject to cellular carrier equipment limitations.
Global positioning locating capabilities will not be
available if satellite signals are obstructed. OnStar will not function if the vehicle’s battery is dis-
charged or disconnected. It may also be inoperative if
the vehicle is in an accident and the OnStar or vehicle
electrical system components are damaged.
OnStar is the communication link between you and ex-
isting governmental emergency and roadside service
providers. OnStar will receive your call and use rea-
sonable effort to contact an appropriate provider. On-
Star cannot promise that the providers will respond in
a timely manner or at all.
If metallic objects, including roof-mounted accessories
or metallic cargo within the accessory, are placed in
the immediate vicinity of the OnStar antenna, the an-
tenna’s performance will be degraded. This may pre-
vent the OnStar system from functioning properly.
Therefore, please use caution when installing roof-top
accessories to make certain that metallic accessories
or metallic objects are not placed in the immediate vi-
cinity of the antenna.

and may produce a sulfur exhaust odor or smell.
SUBARU recommends that you try a different brand of
unleaded gasoline having lower sulfur to determine if
the problem is fuel related before returning your vehi-
cle to an authorized dealer for service. The CHECK
ENGINE warning light/Malfunction indicator lamp may
also turn on. If this occurs, return to your authorized
SUBARU dealer for diagnosis. If it is determined that
the condition is caused by the type of fuel used, re-
pairs may not be covered by your warranty. TMMT
Some gasoline contains an octane-enhancing additive
called MMT (Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tri-
carbonyl). If you use such fuels, your emission control
system performance may deteriorate and the CHECK
ENGINE warning light/Malfunction indicator lamp may
turn on. If this happens, return to your authorized
SUBARU Dealer for service. If it is determined that the
condition is caused by the type of fuel used, repairs
may not be covered by your warranty. T Gasoline for cleaner air
Do not let fuel spill on the exterior surfaces of
the vehicle. Fuels containing alcohol may cause paint damage, which is not covered un-
der the SUBARU Limited Warranty.
Your use of gasoline with detergent additives will help
prevent deposits from forming in your engine and fuel
system. This helps keep your engine in tune and your
emission control system working properly, and is a
way of doing your part for cleaner air. If you continu-
ously use a high quality fuel with the proper detergent
and other additives, you should never need to add any
fuel system cleaning agents to your fuel tank.
Many gasolines are now blended with materials called
oxygenates. Use of these fuels can also help keep the
air cleaner. Oxygenated blend fuels, such as MTBE
(Methyl Tertiary Butyl ether) or ethanol (ethyl or grain
alcohol) may be used in your vehicle, but should con-
tain no more than 15% MTBE or 10% ethanol for the
proper operation of your SUBARU.
In addition, some gasoline suppliers are now produc-
ing reformulated gasolines, which are designed to re-
duce vehicle emissions. SUBARU approves the use of reformulated gasoline.
If you are not sure what the fuel contains, you should
ask your service station operators if their gasolines
contain detergents and oxygenates and if they have

Power steering
Do not hold the steering wheel at the fully
locked position left or right for more than five
seconds. This may damage the power steering
pump.
The power steering system operates only when the
engine is running.
If you lose power steering assist because the engine
stops or the system fails to function, you can steer but it will take much more effort.
NOTE
Right after the engine has been started and before
it has warmed up, you may hear a noise coming
from areas adjacent to the power steering pump
which is located at the right-front area of the en-
gine compartment. This noise is normal. It does
not indicate power steering system trouble.
Braking „ Braking tips
Never rest your foot on the brake pedal while
driving. This can cause dangerous overheating
of the brakes and needless wear on the brake
pads and linings.
T When the brakes get wet
When driving in rain or after washing the vehicle, the
brakes may get wet. As a result, brake stopping dis-
tance will be longer. To dry the brakes, drive the vehi-
cle at a safe speed while lightly depressing the brake
pedal to heat up the brakes. T Use of engine braking
Remember to make use of engine braking in addition
to foot braking. When descending a grade, if only the
foot brake is used, the brakes may start working im-
properly because of brake fluid overheating, caused
by overheated brake pads. To help prevent this, shift
into a lower gear to get stronger engine braking.

All wheel drive distributes the engine power to all four
wheels. AWD vehicles provide better traction when
driving on slippery, wet or snow-covered roads and
when moving out of mud, dirt and sand. By shifting
power between the front and rear wheels, SUBARU
AWD can also provide added traction during acceler-
ation, and added engine braking force during deceler-
ation.
Therefore, your SUBARU AWD vehicle may handle
differently than an ordinary two wheel drive vehicle
and it contains some features unique to AWD. For
safety purposes as well as to avoid damaging the
AWD system, you should keep the following tips in mind: y
An AWD vehicle is better able to climb steeper
roads under snowy or slippery conditions than a two
wheel drive vehicle. There is little difference in han-
dling, however, during extremely sharp turns or sud-
den braking. Therefore, when driving down a slope or
turning corners, be sure to reduce your speed and
maintain an ample distance from other vehicles. y When replacing a tire, make sure you use only the
same size, circumference, construction, brand, and
load range as the original tires listed on the tire plac-
ard. Using other sizes, circumferences or construction
may result in severe mechanical damage to the drive
train of your vehicle and may affect ride, handling,
braking, speedometer/odometer calibration, and
clearance between the body and tires. It also may be
dangerous and lead to loss of vehicle control. y If you use a temporary spare tire to replace a flat
tire, be sure to use the original temporary spare tire
stored in the vehicle. Using other sizes may result in
severe mechanical damage to the drive train of your
vehicle. y Always check the cold tire pressure before starting
to drive. The recommended tire pressure is provided
on the tire placard, which is located under the door
latch on the driver’s side. y Tire chains should always be placed on the front
wheels only.

when towing your vehicle. For detail information, see
“Towing” section in chapter 9.Off road driving
y Always maintain a safe driving speed accord-
ing to the road and weather conditions in order
to avoid having an accident on a sharp turn,
during sudden braking or under other similar
conditions.y Always use the utmost care in driving – over-
confidence because you are driving an all
wheel drive vehicle could easily lead to a seri-
ous accident.
T All AWD models except OUTBACK
Your AWD vehicle is neither a conventional off-road
vehicle nor an all terrain vehicle. It is a passenger car
designed primarily for on-road use. The AWD feature
gives it some limited off-road capabilities in situations
in which driving surfaces a relatively level, obstruction-
free and otherwise similar to on-road driving condi-
tions. Operating it under other than those conditions
could subject the vehicle to excessive stress which
might result in damage not eligible for repair under
warranty. If you do take your SUBARU off road, you
should review the common sense precautions in the

next section (applicable to the OUTBACK) for general
guidance. But please keep in mind that your vehicle’s
off-road capabilities are more limited than those of the
OUTBACK.
Never attempt to drive through pools and puddles, or
roads flooded with water. Water entering the engine
air intake or the exhaust pipe or water splashing onto
electrical parts may damage your vehicle and may
cause it to stall. TOUTBACK
Because of the AWD feature and higher ground clear-
ance, your SUBARU can be driven on ordinary roads
or off-road. But please keep in mind that an AWD
SUBARU is a passenger car and is neither a conven-
tional off-road vehicle nor an all-terrain vehicle. If you
do take your SUBARU off-road, certain common
sense precautions such as the following should be taken: y Make certain that you and all of your passengers
are wearing seat belts. y Carry some emergency equipment, such as a tow-
ing rope or chain, a shovel, wheel blocks, first aid kit
and portable phone or citizens band radio. y Drive carefully. Do not take unnecessary risks by
driving in dangerous areas or over rough terrain. y Slow down and employ extra caution at all times. When driving off-road, you will not have the benefit of
marked traffic lanes, banked curves, traffic signs and
the like. y
Do not drive across steep slopes. Instead, drive ei-
ther straight up or straight down the slopes. A vehicle
can much more easily tip over sideways than it can
end over end. Avoid driving straight up or down slopes
that are too steep.y Avoid sharp turning maneuvers, especially at higher
speeds. y Do not grip the inside or spokes of the steering
wheel. A bad bump could jerk the wheel and injure
your hands. Instead drive with your fingers and
thumbs on the outside of the rim.y If driving through water, such as when crossing
shallow streams, first check the depth of the water and
the bottom of the stream bed for firmness and ensure
that the bed of the stream is flat. Drive slowly and com-
pletely through the stream. The water should be shal-
low enough that it does not reach the vehicle’s under-
carriage. Water entering the engine air intake or the
exhaust pipe or water splashing onto electrical parts
may damage your vehicle and may cause it to stall.
Never attempt to drive through rushing water; regard-
less of its depth, it can wash away the ground from un-
der your tires, resulting in possible loss of traction and
even vehicle rollover.
