To lock the steering wheel , withdraw key
and turn wheel until you hear the locking
pin engage.
Warning
Do not withdraw key from lock until
vehicle is stationary! The steering
lock might otherwise unintentionally
engaged.
Note
If you forget to switch off the side lights or
a turn signal light, an audible signal will
sound after you switch off the ignition or
withdraw the key and then open the driv-
er’s door.
Position 2
If the key is difficult to turn in the lock or
cannot be turned to this position at all, move
the steering wheel back and forward slightly
to release the locking pin. Warning
If the vehicle is allowed to roll, the
ignition key must be in position 2 in
the lock - ignition on. This position
is also indicated by the warning
lights coming on. Failure to turn the
ignition key into this position can
result in the steering locking uninten-
tionally.
Do not withdraw the ignition key un-
til after the vehicle has come to a stop
and has been properly secured to
prevent it moving by applying the
handbrake or engaging a gear.
Position 3
The starter is operated when the key is
turned into this position. The ignition key
must be turned back each time into posi-
tion „1“ before again attempting to start the
engine. The starter repeat lockout in the ig-
nition lock prevents the starter again being
operated when engine is already running.
When the key is in this position, the main/
low beam headlights and other major elec-
trical components which are on, are then
switched off.
The starter may only be operated (ignition
key position 3), if the engine is not run-
ning. If the starter is immediately operated
after switching off the engine, the starter
or the engine can be damaged.
Starting engineGeneral notesWarning
Never run the engine in non-venti-
lated or enclosed areas, the exhaust
gases of the engine contain besides
the odourless and colourless carbon
monoxide a poisonous gas - hazard!
Carbon monoxide can cause uncon-
sciousness and death.
Never leave your vehicle unattended
with the engine running.
Before starting, move gear lever into
Neutral (selector lever of automatic gear-
box into position „P“ or „N“ ) and apply
handbrake firmly.
On models with a manual gearbox, de-
press the clutch pedal when operating
starter so that the starter only has to crank
the engine.
As soon as engine starts, release igni-
tion key immediately - otherwise the starter
may suffer damage.
After starting a cold engine, it may sound
noisy for a moment or two because the oil
pressure has to build up in the hydraulic
tappets first.
Do not warm engine up by running it with vehicle stationary. Drive off
straight away.

Changing stored speedDecelerating
The stored position can be reduced by
pressing the pushbutton B in position SET.
The speed of the vehicle is reduced continu-
ously if the pushbutton B is pressed and held
in position SET. Release the pushbutton
once the desired speed is reached. The
speed is then stored.
If the pushbutton is released at a speed
below 30 km/h, the speed is not stored and
the memory is erased. In this case, the
speed of the vehicle must be re-stored with
pushbutton B in position SET after accel-
erating the car to more than 30km/h.
Accelerating
The stored speed can be increased by
pushing the switch B in the position RES
without operating the accelerator.The speed of the car is increased continu-
ously if the switch is pressed and held. Re-
lease the switch as soon as the desired speed
is reached. This speed is then stored.
Switching off system temporarilyModels with manual gearbox
The system is switched off temporarily by
depressing the brake pedal or clutch pedal.
The system is also switched off by sliding
switch A to the right - into position OFF.
The speed which is stored at this moment
is retained.
Resuming the stored speed is achieved by
releasing the brake pedal or clutch pedal
and after pressing the switch B into posi-
tion RES
Warning
You must only resume the stored
speed if it is not too high for the traf-
fic conditions which exist at that
moment.
Models with automatic gearbox
The system is switched off temporarily by
depressing the brake pedal.
The system is also switched off by sliding
switch A to the right - into position OFF.
The speed stored at this moment is re-
tained.
Resuming the stored speed is achieved by
releasing the brake pedal or clutch pedal
and pressing the switch B into position RES
Warning
You must only resume the stored
speed if it is not too high for the traf-
fic conditions which exist at that

To switched off the system completely ,
move the switch A fully to the right to OFF.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Warning
Particular care is required when per-
forming work in the engine compart-
ment!
Never open the bonnet if you see
that steam or coolant is escaping
from the engine compartment - risk
of scalding!
You must wait long enough, until the
steam or coolant has stopped escap-
ing.
Switch off engine and withdraw ig-
nition key.
Apply handbrake properly.
Move gearshift into Neutral (on
models with automatic gearbox mo-
ve selector lever into position „P“).
Allow engine to cool down.
If the engine is still warm:
- do not place your hand into the ra- diator fan, it might start suddenly.
- do not open filler cap of coolant reservoir as cooling system is
pressurized - risk of scalding.
Avoid short circuits in the electri-
cal system - particularly at the bat-
tery!
If you wish to work under the ve-
hicle, you must secure the vehicle
from rolling away and support it with
suitable supporting blocks: the car
jack is not sufficient for this - risk of
injury!
If it is necessary to carry out test
work when engine is running, there
is an additional risk from rotating
parts - e.g. ribbed belt, alternator,
radiator fan etc. - and from the high-
voltage ignition system.
Never touch the electrical cables
of the ignition system.
Absolutely avoid any jewellery,
loose items of clothing or long hair
from getting into the rotating parts of
the engine - Hazard! Therefore re-
move any jewellery beforehand, tie
up your hair and wear tight fitting
clothing.
It is essential to comply with all the
warning information given in this
manual and with the general rules of
safety when carrying out work on the
engine.
When topping up fluids, ensure that no mix-
ups occur otherwise this may cause severe
operating problems!
The floor below the car should be
inspected regularly in order to de-
tect leaks in good time. If patches of oil or other fluids are visible, the car shouldbe taken to a Škoda Dealer for an inspec-
tion.

It is not recommended to tow-start the
vehicle (despite observing the instruc-
tions which are given in the Owner’s
Manual) in view of the fact that severe
engine damage may result in certain cir-
cumstances.
It is best to attempt to start the engine
by using jump-starting cables - refer to
page 177 of the Owner’s Manual - or to
call on the services of SERVICE Mobil.
General information
The tow rope should be elastic so that
there is no strain on either vehicle. It is best
to use only plastic fibre ropes or ropes
made of a similarly elastic material. It is
important to ensure that no impermissible
pulling forces and no sudden shock loads
occur. If attempting to tow a car which is
not on a paved road, there is always a risk
of the parts of the car to which the tow rope
is attached being subjected to excessive
stress and damaged.
Before attempting to start the engine
by tow-starting the car, always use the
battery of another vehicle as a jump-
starting aid if possible - see page 177. It is essential to pay attention to the follo-
wing points when tow-starting and to-
wing the car:
Observe any legal regulations regarding
towing another vehicle.
Both drivers should be acquainted with
the special features of towing a vehicle.
Persons not familiar with towing a vehicle
should not attempt to tow-start or tow a car.
If a tow rope is used, the driver of the
towing vehicle should engage the clutch
particularly softly when moving off and shift-
ing gears.
The driver of the towed car should en-
sure that the tow rope is always taught.
The ignition of the towed car should be
switched on so that the steering wheel is
not blocked and the turn signal lights, the
windscreen wipers, horn, lights and other
electrical components can be switched on.
As the brake servo unit only operates
when the engine is running, note that suffi-
ciently greater force is required to depress
the brake pedal when the engine is not run-
ning and the steering is also much more
difficult to operate.
For technical reasons, it is not possible
to tow-start a car fitted with an automatic
gearbox.
In the event of a defect in the gearbox,
your vehicle no longer contains lubri-
cant, the car must be towed with the
driving wheels lifted or on a special
transporter or trailer.

wed vehicle to note during tow-starting:
Before starting to tow the car, engage
3rd or 4th gear, depress clutch pedal and
hold. The ignition should be switched on.
Once both vehicles are moving, release
the clutch pedal.
As soon as the engine has started, de-
press clutch pedal and take the car out of
gear to avoid running into the towing vehi-
cle.
If your car is fitted with a catalytic con-
verter, the engine must not be started by
towing the car over a distance of more
than 50 m (150 ft) if the catalytic con-
verter is warm otherwise uncombusted
fuel may get into the catalytic converter
and cause damage. Pay attention to the following points if
towing a car fitted with an automatic
gearbox:
Move the shift lever into position „N“.
The maximum towing speed is 50 km/h
(30 mph).
The maximum towing distance is 50 km
(30 miles)!
If the car has to be towed over a greater
distance, the front wheels should be raised
clear of the ground.
The gear oil pump does not operate when
the engine is not running; consequently, the
gearbox is not sufficiently lubricated when
running at high speeds and over lengthy
distances.
If the car is towed by a tow truck, the front
wheels should always be raised clear of the
ground.
If the rear wheels are raised clear of the
ground, the drive shafts will rotate in the
opposite direction. As a result, the gears in
the automatic gearbox will run at such high
speeds that the gearbox could suffer se-
vere damage within a short time.

The vehicle identification number
(chassis number)is stamped in the rear cross panel of the
engine compartment. It is visible through a
window in the plenum chamber cover.
This number is also shown in the left cor-
ner of the windscreen.The engine numberis stamped on the engine block.Identification plateis located in the front of the engine com-
partment at the left suspension strut dome.Homologation plate*is located on the front lock panel.
Vehicles for certain countries are not pro-
vided with a homologation plate.
Vehicle data stickeris located below the floor covering of the
luggage compartment. The sticker contains the following vehicle
data:

2 - Vehicle model
3 - Engine output/Gearbox/
Engine code letters/Gearbox code

number
4 - Optional equipment number.

Sticker on fuel filler flapA sticker is affixed to the inside of the fuel
filler flap, and contains the following infor-
mation:

- tyre sizes.
