tain vehicle components containoremit chemi-
cals known tothe State ofCalifornia tocause can-
cer and birth defects orother reproductive harm.
In addition, certainfluidscontained invehicles and
certain products ofcomponent wearcontain or

Production
The manufacture ofPorsche vehicles inafactory
adjacent toaresidential arearequires morethan
mere compliance withalllaws andregulations.
Whether inproduction orrepair, Porsche always
relies onenvironmentally friendlytechnology.
An example ofthis isthe water-based paintused
in our painting installation.
Water-base paintsandnew painting methods re-
duce solvent emissions by70 per cent.
And thewater usedinthe painting installation isre-
circulated. Wastewaterleaves thePorsche facto-
ry only after being appropriately treated.
A waste-management systemhasbeen intro-
duced toreduce theamount ofwaste whilesimul-
taneously increasing therecycling rate.

Brakebooster
The brake booster assistsbraking onlywhen
the engine isrunning.
When thecar ismoving whiletheengine isnot run-
ning, orifthe brake booster isdefective, more
pressure onthe brake pedalisrequired tobring
the car toastop.
Moisture orroad saltonbrakes affects braking.
When thevehicle isdriven onsalted roadsforex-
tended periods, thebrakes shouldbewashed
down thoroughly aboutevery2weeks. Anauto-
matic carwash facilitycannot dothis jobproperly.
Brakes willdry after afew cautious brakeapplica-
tions.

Warning!
Driving through watermayreduce thetrac-
tion. Moisture onbrakes fromroadwater, car
wash, orcoating ofroad saltmay affect
braking efficiency.

pends onhow thebrakes areused.

intervals recommended inyour Maintenance
Booklet.

Brake
pads
Wear onthe brake padsandbrake discsdepends
to agreat extent onthe driving styleandthecon-
ditions ofuse and therefore cannotbeexpressed
in actual milesonthe road.
The high-performance brakesystem isdesigned
for optimal braking effectatall speeds andtem-
peratures.
Certain speeds, brakingforcesandambient
conditions (suchastemperature andhumidity)
therefore mightcause "brake noises".
New brake padsorlinings
New brake padsandbrake discshavetobe "bro-
ken i",and therefore onlyattain optimal friction
when thecar has covered severalhundred miles
or km.
The slightly reduced brakingabilitymustbecom-
pensated forbypressing thebrake pedalharder.
This alsoapplies whenever thebrake padsand
brake discsarereplaced.

Exercise ExtremeCautionwhen
Working onyour Vehicle
/!\
Warning!
Ignoring thefollowing instructions may
cause serious personal injury.
~ The engine compartment ofany motor vehicle
is apotentially hazardous area.Ifyou arenot
fully familiar withproper repairprocedures, do
not attempt theadjustments describedonthe
following pages.
This caution appliestothe entire vehicle.
~ Only work onyour vehicle outdoors orinawell
ventilated area.
~ Ensure thatthere arenoopen flames inthe
area ofyour vehicle atany time when fuel
fumes mightbepresent. Beespecially cau-
tious ofsuch devices suchashot water heat-
ers which igniteaflame intermittently.
~ Before working onany part inthe engine com-
partment, turntheengine offand letitcool
down sufficiently. Hotengine compartment
components canburn skinoncontact.
~ Bealert andcautious aroundengineatall
times whiletheengine isrunning.
If work hastobe performed withtheengine
running, alwayssetthe parking brake,and
make suretheshift lever isinneutral position.

Maintenance, CarCare ~
Inparticular, bevery careful toensure that
items ofclothing (ties,shirt, sleeves etc.),
jewelry, longhair,hand orfingers cannotget
caught inthe engine-compartment blower,fan,
belts orother moving parts.
The radiator andradiator fansareinthe front
of the car.

Carry outwork inthese areasonlywiththeen-
gine off,theignition switched off,and exercise
extreme caution.
~ Your Porsche isequipped withanelectronic ig-
nition system. Whentheignition ison, high
voltage ispresent inall wires connected with
the ignition system; therefore, exerciseex-
treme caution whenworking onany part ofthe
engine whiletheignition ison orthe engine is
running.
~ Always support yourcarwith safety stands ifit
is necessary towork under thecar.
~ When working underthecarwithout safety

make surethecarison level ground, the
wheels areblocked, andthat theengine
cannot bestarted.
Remove theignition key. ~
Donot smoke orallow anopen flame around
the battery orfuel.

Warning!
Brake fluidishazardous toyour health, and

Brake fluidalsoattacks paintwork.
I>
Keep brake fluidoutofchildren's reach.
I>
Take carewhile topping offbrake fluidnotto
soil theluggage compartment oritems oflug-
gage .
Checking thebrake fluidlevel
The reservoir forthe hydraulic brakingsystems is
in the luggage compartment.
I>
Check thebrake·fluid levelregularly atthe
transparent reservoir.
The fluid level should always liebetween the"MIN"
and "MAX" marks.
A slight decrease inthe fluid level duetowear and
automatic readjustment ofthe disc brakes isnor-
mal.
If, however, thefluid level fallsmarkedly orbelow
the "MIN" mark, thebraking systemmayhave
developed aleak.
I>
Have thebraking systemchecked immediately
at an authorized Porschedealer. Changing
thebrake fluid
Brake fluidabsorbs moisture fromtheairover
time. Thisaccumulation ofwater lowers theboil-
ing point and, under certain operating conditions,
can affect thebraking action.
Therefore havethebrake fluidchanged inaccor-
dance withthechange intervals statedinthe
brochure "Maintenance".

Vapor control systemandstorage
When thefuel tank isfilled, vapors arecollected in

vapors tothe carbon canister wheretheyare
stored aslong asthe engine doesnotrun.
Purge system
When theengine isrunning, thefuel vapors from
the canister willbemixed withfresh airfrom the
