Towing
Comply with national regulations when
towing.
Having the vehicle carried away on a trans-
porter or trailer is pre ferable to towing it
away. We recommend the use of a rigid
towbar if towing is nec essary.
You may on lytow the vehicle a maximum
of 50 km. A maximum towing speed of
50 km /hmust not be exceeded. i
Deactivate the automatic locking while driv-
in gfunction when towi ng. You could otherwise
beco me locked out when pushi ngortowing the
vehicle.
! Vehicles wit hautomatic transmission
must not be tow-started.
! If th eengine does not start, try jump-
starting it ( =page 379).
! If the vehicle does not start after
jump-starting, have it towed to a quali-
fied specialist work shop, e.g. to a
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.
! If the vehicle is to be towed for a longer
distance, only tow it with the rear axle
raised. !
If the vehicle has suffere dtransmission
damage, only tow it with the propeller
shaft disconnected.
! Before tow ing the vehicle, make sure
the battery isconnected and charged.
Otherwise, you will not be able to
switch on the ignition and will have
no steering and braki ngassistance.
! Shift the transmission to position N. Opening the front cover
The fixing points for the bolt-on towing eye
are located in the bumpers. They are locat-
ed under the cover on the right-hand side
when
viewed in the direction of travel both
at the front and the rear.
! Only secure the tow cable or towbar to the

Risk of accident Tow the vehicle using a rigid
towbar if:
! the engine will not start
! there is a malfunction in the power sup-
ply or the vehicle's electrical sy stem
There is no power assistance for the steer-
ing when the engine is not running. Signifi-
ca ntly greater force is then needed to steer
the vehicle and to brake.
When towing or tow-starting another vehi-
cle, its weight should not be greater than the
permissible gross weight of your ve hicle. Po
