The objectives are for the natural resources
whi chform the basis of our existen ceon this
pl anet to beused sparingly an din a manner
whi chtakes the requirements of both nature
an d hu manity in to account.
Yo ut oo can make a contribution towards
protecting the environment by operating
your vehicle in an environmentally-responsi-
ble manner.
Fue lconsumption and the rate of en gine,
tra nsmission, brake and tyre wear dep end
on the following:
! the operating conditions of your vehicle
! your driving style
Yo u can influence bothofthese condition s. Therefore, bear the following in
mind:
Operating conditions
! Avoid drivi ngshort dista nces as this
inc reases fuel consumption.
! Make sure that tyre pressures are
alway scorrect.
! Do not carry any unnecessary we ight.
! Keep an eyeonthe vehic le's fuel con-
sumption.
! Remove roof racks once you no longer
need them.
! A regularly serviced vehicle will contrib-
ute to environmental protection. You
should there fore adhere to th eservice
intervals.
! Always have service work carried out at
a qualified specialist workshop, e.g. at a
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre. Style of driving:
!
Do not depress the accelerator pedal
when starting the engine.
! Do not warm up the engine with the
vehicle st ationary.
! Drive carefu lly and maintain sufficient
dista nce from the vehic lein front.
! Avoid frequent ,powerful acce leratio n.
! Change gear ingood timeand use each
gear only up to 2
/ 3 of its maximum
engine speed.
! Switch off the engine in stationary traf-
fic.

well. Make sure that floormats or car pets in
the driver's footwell:
! donot obstruct the pedals
! areproperl ysecured
The objects could otherwise get caught
between the pedal sif you accelerate or
brake suddenly. You would then not be able
to brake or accelerate. This coul dlead to
ac cident and injury. Wearing seat belts

Risk of injury A seat belt that is not worn correctl
y,or that
is not correctly engaged in the seat belt
buckle, cannot perform its intende dprotec-
tive function. It could even cause severe or
fatal injuries.
For this reason, make sure that all the occu-
pants – in particular, pregnant women –
always wear their seat belts correctly.
! The se atbelt must not be twisted and
must pass closely over your body. You
should therefore avoid wearing bulky
clot hing (e.g. winter coats). The shoul-
der section of the belt must be routed
over the middle of your shoulder – never
ar ound you rnec kor under your arm –
and must be pulled tight against the
upper body. The lap bel t must crossover
your lap as low down as possibl eat all
times, i.e. over your hip joints – not
across your stomach or lower abdom en.
If necessary, press the belt strap down a
bit and retighten bypulling the seat belt
upwards towards the belt reel. !
Do not route the belt strap over sharp or
fragile objects, especially if these are on
or inside your clothing, e.g. spectacles,
pens or keys. The belt strap could ot her-
wise be damaged and you could be
injured as a result.
! Only one person shou ld use each seat
belt at any one time. Do not allow chil-
dren to be carried on the lap of another
occupant since the child will then no
longer be secured in the event of an
accident, braking or a sudden change in
direction. This could result in severe or
fatal injuries to the child or other occu-
pants.
! Persons less than 1.50 m tall cannot
wear the seat belts correctly. Persons
less that 1.50 m tall therefore require

6 Select either first or reverse gear.
6 Slowly release the clutch pedal and
carefully depress the accelerator.
! Change gear in good time. Make sure that
the enginespe eddoes notreach thered area in
the rev cou nter. There is otherwise a danger of
engine dam age.
Do not allow the wheels tospin, ifpossible. You
could otherwise damage the dri vetrain. Automatic
transmission*
i You can only move the selector lever tothe
re quired position by depressing the brake pedal.
Only then isthe selector lever lock disabled.
6 Depress the brake pedal and keep it in
this posi tion.
The selector lever lock is released.
6 Release the parking brake.
6 Move the selector lever to position D
or R.
i Wait for the shi ftprocess to complete
before pulling away.
6 Release the brake pedal.
6 Carefully depress the accelerator
pe dal.
i After a cold start, the automatic transmi s-
sion will shift at a higher engine spe ed. This helps
th e catalytic converter toreach its operati ng
te mperature more quickly. Dipped-

The light switch is located on the dash-
board between the steering wheel and the
driver's door.

6 Press the combination switch in the
direction of arrow 1or2.
The cor responding turn signal indicator
lamp flashes in the instrument cluster.
The combination switch moves back to
its basic position automatically after
large steering wheel movements.
i Press the switch briefly to signal a minor
change in direction. The appropriate turn signal
flashes three times. The combination switch is located on the
left of the steering column.

Th erain sensor automatically adjusts wiping fre-
quency depending onhow much rai nfalls on the
wiper sensor.
The rai nsensor is an advanced int elligent int er-
mitt ent function which shoul donlybe activated
wh en it is raining. Werecommend that you do
not acti vate the rai nsensor indry weather as dirt
or ooptical effects may cause inadv ertent wiper

Mercedes-Benz recommends that you only
use the child restraint systems listed
on ( =page 63). G
Riskof injury Do not leave children unsupervi
sedin the
vehicle, eve nif the yare secured in a child
restra int system. The children could:
! injure themselv es on parts of the vehicle
! press the central locking switch, thereby
releasing the child-pr ooflo ck s, and then
open the doors. This could result in
injury to themselves and other persons.
Or they could get out of the vehicle,
injuring themselves as they do so or
they could be injured by passing vehi-
cl es
! beser iously or even fatally harmed by
prolonged exposure to heat G
Risk of injury To reduce the risk of serio

the child in the event of an accident, braking
or a sudden cha nge in direction:
! Always secure children less than 1.50 m
tall and under twelve years of age in spe-
cial child restraint systems installed on
a suitable vehicle seat, since they can-
not wear the seat belts correctly

years ofage on the fro nt-passenger seat
unless the child is secured in a child
restraint system equipped wit hauto-
matic child seat rec ognition
! Onnoaccount should children travel sit-
tin gon the lap ofanother occupa nt. It
would not be possible torestrain the
children as a result of the forces acting
in the event of an accident, sudden
braking or abru ptchanges in direction.
They would be thrown ag ainst parts of
the vehic leinterior and be seriously or
fatally injured
! All vehic leoc cupants must wear their
seat belt correctly at all times G
Risk of inju ry If the child restraint system has not
been fit-
ted correctly to a suitable vehicle seat, the
child cannot be restrained in the event of an
accident or sudden braking and could there-
fore be seriously or fatally injured.
For this reason, observe the installation
instructions issued by the child restraint
syst em manufactu rer when fitting the child
restraint system.
It is preferable to fit the child restraint sys-
tem to the rear seats. The child is generally
better protected there.
For this reason, donot place objects (e.g. a
cushion) underneath the child restraint sys-
tem. The entir ebase of the child restraint
system must be in contact with the seat sur-

system, e.g. ISOFIX child seat sec uring sys-
tem, has been damaged or subjected to a
load inan accid ent, th echild secured in it
could be seriously or fatally injured in the
event of an ac cident, br aking or a sudden
change in direction.
For this reason, have child restraint systems
and th eir mountings that are damaged or
have been subjected to a load in an acci dent
checked immediately, and replaced if nec-
essary, at a qualified specialist workshop
which has the necessary specialist knowl-
edge and tools to carry out th ework
required. Mercedes-Benz recom mends that
you use a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre for
this purpose. In particular, work relevant to
safety or on safety-related systems must be
carried out at a qualified specialist work-

The turn signals flash once. The locking
knobs in the doors pop up. The anti-
theft alarm system* is deactivated.
If you do not open either a door or the boot
after you have unlocked your vehicle, the
vehicle relocks itself after approximately
40 seconds.
Locking the vehicle centrally
6 Press the ‹button.
The turn signals flash three times when
both of the doors and the boo tlid are
closed. The locking knobs in the doors
drop down. Th eanti-theft alarm sys-
tem* is primed. Individual settings
If you fr
equently travel alone, you may wish
to change how the key functions. Pressing
the Πbutton then only unlocks the
driver's door and the fuel filler flap.
6 Press and hold both the Œand‹
buttons simultaneously for approxi-
mately si xseconds until battery check
