Getting started
Driving
6 Select either first or reverse gear.
6 Slowly release the clutch pedal and
carefully depress the accelerator.
! Change gear in good time. Make sure that
the enginespe eddoes notreach thered area in
the rev cou nter. There is otherwise a danger of
engine dam age.
Do not allow the wheels tospin, ifpossible. You
could otherwise damage the dri vetrain. Automatic
transmission*
i You can only move the selector lever tothe
re quired position by depressing the brake pedal.
Only then isthe selector lever lock disabled.
6 Depress the brake pedal and keep it in
this posi tion.
The selector lever lock is released.
6 Release the parking brake.
6 Move the selector lever to position D
or R.
i Wait for the shi ftprocess to complete
before pulling away.
6 Release the brake pedal.
6 Carefully depress the accelerator
pe dal.
i After a cold start, the automatic transmi s-
sion will shift at a higher engine spe ed. This helps
th e catalytic converter toreach its operati ng
te mperature more quickly. Dipped-
beam headlamps
The light switch is located on the dash-
board between the steering wheel and the
driver's door.

gear to be selected.
Do not change down for additio nal engine
braking ona slippery road surface. The drive
wheels could then lose their grip and the
vehi cle could skid. Youc ould lose control of

Visit workshop! The measuring system is malfunc-
tioning. 6
Have the measuring system checked at a
qual ified specialist workshop, e.g. a
Mercedes-Benz Serv ice Ce ntre.

Reduce oillevel! You have added too much engine
oil
.There is a risk of damaging the
engine or catalytic converter. 6
Siphon off the oil. Observe the legal re-
quirements.
Engine oil
Visit workshop! The engine oil level has dro
pped to
a critical le vel. 6
Check the engine oil le vel (= page 245)
and top up the engine oil if necessary.
6 Have the engine checked for leaks if the
engine oil needs toppi ngup more often
than usu al. The oil contains water. 6
Have the oil checked. :

6 Switch on the ignition (key in position 2
in the ignition lock ).
6 Move the selector lever to N.
! Do not tow the vehicle further than 50 km.
Do not exceed a towing spe edof 50 km /h,ot h-
erw ise the trans mission could be damag ed.
Only tow the ve hicle with the rear axl e
raised if:
! you need to tow the vehicle for a longer
distance
! the transmission has been damaged
Instead of raising the rear axle, the propel-
ler shaft to the driven axl ecan be removed. Points to bea
rin mi nd:
! Vehicles with automatic transmission*
must not be tow-started.
! The battery must be connected.
! The engine and the catalytic converter
must be cold.
! Avoid repea ted or lengthy attempts to
start the engine. Vehicles with
manual transmission
6 Switch on the ignition (key in position 2
in the ignition lock).
6 Make sure that no gear isengaged.
6 Tow the vehicle to set it in motion, or al-
low it to roll.
6 Engage a suit able gear and gradually
release the clutch. Do not depress the
accelerator.
! The engine is started. The towing
eyes can be used to pull the ve-
hic leonto a trailer or transporter for trans-
po rting purposes.
Make su rethat no gea ris engag ed. On ve-
hicles with automatic transmission*, the
selector lever must be in position N
! Lash the vehicle securely ,and only by the
wheels or wheel rim s.
