219 Calibrating the compass (deviation calibration)
The direction display on the compass deviates from the true
direction determined by the earth's magnetic field. The angle
of deviation varies according to the geographic position of the
vehicle.To adjust this deviation, stop the vehicle, then push and hold
the COMPº switch until the zone number appears on the
display. Then push the COMPº switch, referring to the
following map to select the number of the zone where the
vehicle is.
Hawaii: 6
Samoa: 5
Guam: 7
Saipan: 7
Puerto Rico: 10

Zone numbersLeaving the system after the calibration for several seconds,
the direction will appear on the display. It shows the zone
number is set.
CAUTION
Do not adjust the display while the vehicle is moving.
Be sure to adjust the display only when the vehicle is
stopped.
Calibrating the compass (circling calibration)
To rectify the compass, stop the vehicle and push and hold the
COMPº switch until Cº appears on the display.
There is also a case that Cº appears on the display in case of
the drastic change of the magnetic field.

Drive the vehicle slowly (at 8 km/h [5 mph] or lower) in a circle
until the direction is displayed. If there is not enough space to
drive in a circle, drive around the block until the direction is
displayed.
After driving in 1 to 3 circles in the above method, calibration
is complete with the direction shown on the display.Perform circling calibration just after you have purchased
your Lexus. And then always perform circling calibration
after the battery has been removed, replaced or
disconnected.
Do not perform circling calibration of the compass in a place
where the earth's magnetic field is subject to interference by
artificial magnetic fields (underground parking, under a steel
tower, between buildings, roof parking, near a crossing,
near a large vehicle, etc.).
During calibration, do not operate electric systems (moon
roof, power windows, etc.) as they may interfere with the
calibration.
CAUTION
When doing the circling calibration, be sure to secure
a wide space, and watch out for people and vehicles
in the neighborhood. Do not violate any local traffic
rules while performing circling calibration.
Do not adjust the display while the vehicle is moving.
Be sure to adjust the display only when the vehicle is
stopped.

AUDIO
265 (i) If the player malfunctions
If the player or another unit equipped with the player
malfunctions, your audio system will display one of the four
following error messages.
If WAITº appears on the display: It indicates that the inside
of the player unit may be too hot due to the very high ambient
temperature. Remove the disc from the player and allow the
player to cool down.
If ERROR 1º appears on the display: It indicates that the
disc is dirty, damaged, or it was inserted up-side down. Clean
the disc or insert it correctly.
If ERROR 3º or ERROR 4º appears on the display: It
indicates there is a trouble inside the system. Eject the disc.
If the malfunction is not rectified: Take your vehicle to your
Lexus dealer.
Audio remote controls (steering switches)
The switches are installed on the left side of the steering wheel.
MODEº switch: Use this switch to turn on or off the audio
system, or change the audio mode.
To turn on the system, push the switch briefly. To turn off the
system, push and hold the switch until you hear a beep.
To change the audio mode, turn on the system and push the
switch briefly. If a tape or compact disc is not inserted, the
TAPEº or CDº mode is skipped.
The DVD player will be selectable if a rear seat entertainment
system is installed in your vehicle.
+
-º switch: Use this switch to adjust the volume.
To increase the volume, push the +º side. To decrease the
volume, push the ±º side. The volume continues to increase
or decrease while the switch is being pressed.

BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE
1. Check the area around the vehicle before entering it.
2. Adjust seat position, seatback angle, head restraint height
and steering wheel angle.
3. Adjust the inside and outside rear view mirrors.
4. Lock all doors.
5. Fasten seat belts.
Remember to check that the service reminder indicators
function when turning the key to ONº, and check the fuel
gauge to see that you have sufficient fuel.
IGNITION SWITCH WITH STEERING
LOCK
STARTº Ð Starter motor on. The key will return to the
ONº position when released.
For starting tips, see page 374.
It is not a malfunction even if the needle of the tachometer, fuel
gauge or engine coolant temperature gauge returns to the
bottom position when the ignition switch is turned to the
STARTº position.
ONº Ð Engine on and all accessories on.
This is the normal driving position.
It is not malfunction even if the needle on the speedometer may
move when the ignition switch is turned to the ONº position.

NOTICE
Do not leave the key in the ONº position if the engine
is not running. The battery will discharge and the
electronic ignition system could be damaged.
ACCº Ð Accessories such as the radio operate, but the
engine is off.
If you leave the key in the ACCº or LOCKº position and open
the driver's door, a buzzer will remind you to remove the key.
LOCKº Ð Engine is off and the steering wheel is locked.
The ignition key can be removed only at this position.
To turn the key from ACCº to the LOCKº position, you must
put the transmission selector lever in the Pº position.
Once you remove the key, the engine immobilizer system is
automatically set. See Engine immobilizer systemº on page
14.
When starting the engine, the key may seem stuck at the
LOCKº position. To free it, first be sure the key is pushed all
the way in, and then rock the steering wheel slightly while
turning the key gently.
If, in an emergency, you must turn the engine off while the
vehicle is moving, turn the key only to ACCº.
