o Power Steering Pump, Belt and Hoses Check the power steering pump and hoses for leakage and damage. Replace any dam-aged or leaking parts immediately. Inspect thepower steering belt for evidence of cuts,cracks, excessive wear, oiliness and propertension. Replace or adjust it if necessary.

Engine Coolant Level
The engine coolant level may be observed
through the side of the plastic coolant reservoir (expansion tank) when the engine is cold. If thelevel is below the "L" mark, add coolant of thecorrect concentration until the level is be-tween the "L" and "F" marks. If the level fallsbelow the "L" mark on a regular basis despitebeing topped up, consult a Hyundai dealer.

NOTE: It is imperative that vehicles fitted with an
air conditioning system have a coolant concentration of the recommended strengthat all times. The use of the air conditioningsystem when the cooling system is filledwith water only will result in the heatermatrix freezing and subsequently bursting. SG050D1-E
To Change the Coolant
The coolant should be changed at thoseintervals specified in the vehicle maintenanceschedule in Section 5. NOTE: Care should be taken to ensure that cool- ant is not allowed to spill onto thepaintwork since the finish may becomedamaged. If coolant spillage occurs, theaffected area should be rinsed thoroughlywith water.
1. Park the vehicle on level ground and en- sure that the parking brake is firmly ap-plied, and the engine allowed to cool. Do not attempt this operation whilst the engine is hot since burning or scaldingmay result.
2. Prepare a suitable receptacle to collect the displaced coolant and position this underthe radiator drain tap.
3. With the heater temperature control set to the "HOT" position, remove the radiatorcap and open the radiator drain tap.

4. When the engine coolant has drained com-
pletely, close the drain tap ensuring that this is not over tightened.
5. Prepare a suitable quantity of new engine coolant (refer to section 9) and pour thisinto the radiator. 6. Start the engine with the radiator cap still
removed and continue to add coolant asthe level decreases as air is expelled fromthe system. When the level remains con-stant, replace the radiator cap and replen-ish the coolant reservoir.
7. When the engine is hot, check to ensure that no coolant leaks are present.
WARNING: The cooling fan is controlled by engine
coolant temperature and may sometimes operate even when the engine is not run-ning. Use extreme caution when workingnear the blades of the cooling fan so thatyou are not injured by a rotating fanblade. As the engine coolant temperaturedecreases, the fan will automatically shutoff. This is a normal condition.

1. Remove the centre cover from the engine rocker cover.
2. Remove plug lead from the sparking plug to be replaced, pulling the lead by the rubber cap. (Pulling the lead may damage the car-bon conductor).

Checking the Refrigerant
1. Start the engine and run at idle for several minutes with the refrigeration system run- ning at the coldest setting.
2. Open the bonnet and inspect the sight glass on the top of the receiver dryer.
3. If the refrigerant charge is insufficient, a flow of bubbles will be observed through the sightglass.
4. If the refrigerant charge is satisfactory, no bubbles will be observed through the sightglass.
CAUTION: Running the air conditioning system with a low refrigerant level may damage the com-pressor. SG140D1-E
Off Season Maintenance The air conditioning must be run for ten minutes or so weekly during periods when the systemwould not normally be used to ensure that thecompressor and seals are lubricated. If thisprecaution is not observed the compressor sealsmay become stuck to the compressor shaft anddamaged when the system is next used result-ing in a loss of refrigerant and damage to thecompressor. Compressor Drive Belt
The air conditioning compressor drive belt

WARNING: The cooling fan is controlled by engine coolant temperature and may sometimesoperate even when the engine is not run-ning. Use extreme caution when workingnear the blades of the cooling fan so thatyou are not injured by a rotating fan blade.As the engine coolant temperature decreas-es, the fan will automatically shut off. Thisis a normal condition. The engine cooling fan should operate before the temperature gauge reaches the upper por-tion of the scale and the condenser fan shouldoperate whenever the air conditioning is in use. The power steering fluid level should bechecked daily. To check the power steering fluid level, be sure the ignition is "OFF", then check to makecertain that the power steering fluid level isbetween the "MAX" and "MIN" level markingson the fluid reservoir. NOTE: Grinding noise from power steering pump may be heard immediately after the engineis started in extremely cold condition(below -4°F). If the noise stops during warmup, there is no abnormal function in thesystem. This is due to a power steeringfluid characteristic in extremely cold con-ditions. FLUID RECOMMENDATION Only automatic transmission fluid meeting the specification of PSF-3 or Dexron 2 should beused in the power steering system.

SH010A1-E EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS (Not all models) Depending upon the market for which the ve-hicle is destined, the emission control systemwill comprise one or more of the followingemission control devices. (1) Crankcase emission control system (2) Evaporative emission control system (3) Exhaust emission control system In order that the proper functioning of the emis- sion control systems may be ensured, it isrecommended that the vehicle is inspected andmaintained by an authorized Hyundai dealer inaccordance with the maintenance schedule inthis manual. The positive crankcase ventilation system is employed to prevent air pollution caused byblow-by gases being emitted from the crank-case by introducing fresh air to the crankcase through the air cleaner where this mixes withblow-by gases and then passes through thePCV valve into the intake manifold from whereit subsequently enters the combustion cham-ber and is burned.

2. EVAPORATIVE EMISSION
CONTROL SYSTEM
The Evaporative Emission Control System is designed to prevent fuel vapours from escap-ing into the atmosphere through the fuel tankventilation system.Whilst the engine is not running, fuel vapoursgenerated inside the fuel tank are absorbedand stored in a charcoal canister. When theengine is started, the vapours stored in thecanister are drawn into the induction systemthrough the purge control solenoid valve andare subsequently burned.The purge control solenoid valve is controlledby the ECU; when the engine coolant tempera-ture is low or the engine is idling, the purgecontrol valve is closed and fuel vapours remainstored in the canister. Under normal runningconditions when the engine is warm, the valveopens and the vapours are drawn into the inlettract and subsequently burned in the combus-tion chamber. SH020A1-E
Catalytic Convertor Operation Precautions; For a gasoline engine Hyundai Matrix models are fitted with catalytic convertors which require special operatingconsiderations. The catalytic convertor servesto oxidize certain noxious elements of theexhaust gases leaving the engine to reduce thelevel of pollutants emitted from the vehicle and,provided that care is exercised to prevent dam-age, the catalyst will operate efficiently for thelife of the vehicle.

o Aluminium wheels which are not sup- plied as Original Equipment should not be mixed on the same vehicle withthe original steel wheels. TYRE ROTATION
The tyre wear characteristics will vary be-
tween each tyre dependant upon the condi-tions of use. It is normal for the front tyres towear more rapidly than those fitted to the rearof the vehicle and therefore tyre rotation willprovide a means of helping to ensure an evenwear rate across the tyre set. For vehiclesfitted with radial ply tyres, rotation should beconfined to front to rear tyre alternation. It isnot recommended that radial ply tyres berotated from side to side. SI060A1-E
TYRE BALANCING Incorrect tyre balance will cause steering
vibration and uneven tyre wear. The vehicletyres are balanced during production but mayneed further balancing throughout the life ofthe tyres.
It is recommended that the tyres be balanced
on the car for best results and that the tyres arebalanced whenever they have been removedfrom the wheel for repair.

SNOW TYRES If it is desired to fit snow tyres to the vehicle,
it must be ascertained that the original sizeand load carrying capacity are met by thereplacement tyres. When using snow tyres,the vehicle should not be driven at speeds inexcess of 60 MPH.

TYRE CHAINS
Tyre chains, if necessary, should be installed
on the front wheels. Be sure that the chains arethe proper size and that they are installed inaccordance with the manufacturer's instruc-tions.
To minimize tyre and chain wear, do not contin-
ue to use tyre chains when they are no longerneeded.
CAUTION:When driving on roads covered with snow
or ice, drive at less than 20 mph (30 km/h). Tyre pressures should be increased by 3 psi
when the vehicle is driven fully laden or underconditions of sustained high speed motoring.
