Throttle lever
Check to see that the throttle lever operates cor-
rectly. It must open smoothly and spring back to
the idle position when released. Have a Yamaha
dealer repair as necessary for proper operation.

You are recommended to put this owner’s manual
and low-pressure tire gauge in the vinyl bag and
always carry them along with the owner’s tool kit
under the seat. The service information included in
this manual is intended to provide you, the owner,
with the necessary information for completing your
own preventive maintenance and minor repairs.
The tools provided in the owner’s tool kit are suffi-
cient for this purpose, except that a torque wrench
is also necessary to properly tighten nuts and
bolts.NOTE:_ If you do not have a torque wrench available dur-
ing a service operation requiring one, take your
machine to a Yamaha dealer to check the torque
settings and adjust them as necessary. _

5. Remove the oil filter cover by removing the
bolts and then remove the oil filter element.
6. Clean the oil strainer and oil filter element
with solvent.
7. Check the O-ring for damage and replace it if
necessary.
8. Install the oil filter element and O-ring.
9. Install the oil filter cover by installing the bolts.
10. Install the oil strainer, compression spring, O-
ring and drain bolt. Tighten the drain bolt and
oil filter cover bolts to the specified torques.CAUTION:_ Before installing the drain bolt, be sure to in-
stall the O-ring, compression spring and oil
strainer. _

Before installing the spark plug, measure the elec-
trode gap with a wire thickness gauge and adjust it
to specification.
When installing the spark plug, always clean the
gasket surface and its mating surface. Wipe off
any grime from the threads and tighten it to the
specified torque.Spark plug gap:

4. Tighten the locknut at the clutch lever.
5. Screw in the adjusting bolt at the rear brake
caliper by hand until it feels tight, then screw it
out 1/8 turn. Tighten the locknut to the speci-
fied torque.CAUTION:_ When tightening the locknut, hold the adjust-
ing bolt with a wrench so that the adjusting
bolt does not turn together with the locknut. _
WARNING
_ Operating with improperly adjusted brakes
could cause the brakes to malfunction, result-
ing in reduced braking performance. This
could increase the chance of a collision or ac-
cident. After adjusting the parking brake, block
the rear of the machine off the ground and spin
the rear wheels. Check to make sure there is
no brake drag. If brake drag is noticed, perform
the adjustment again. _
