General information
Shiftlock
When your car is parked, the gear selector is locked in the (P)ark pos\
ition. To release the selector from
this position, turn the ignition key to position II (or start the engin\
e), depress the brake pedal, press the
button on the front of the gear selector knob and move the selector from\
(P)ark.
Keylock
This means that when you switch off the ignition, the gear selector must\
be in the (P)ark position before
the key can be removed from the ignition switch.
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
The ABS system in your car performs a self-diagnostic test when the vehi\
cle first reaches the speed of
approximately 12 mph (20 km/h). The brake pedal will pulsate several t\
imes and a sound may be audible
from the ABS control module. This is normal.
Fuel filler door
Press the button on the light switch panel (see
page 34) when the car is at a standstill to unlock the fuel
filler door. Please note that the fuel filler door will remain unlocked \
until the car begins to move
forward. An audible click will be heard when the fuel filler door relock\
s.
Fuel filler cap
After refueling, close the fuel filler cap by turning it clockwise until\
it clicks into place. If this cap is not
closed tightly or if the engine is running when the car is refueled, the\

ignition key is in position II. If the headlight switch is in position all lights will go out when the
ignition is switched off.
The headlight switch must be in this position before the high beams will\
function.
Switch from high to low beams and vice versa by pulling the turn signal \
switch lever on the left side of
steering column toward you.
B - Instrument illumination
Move the thumbwheel up to increase brightness or down to decrease bright\
ness. There is also an
instrument panel illumination sensor (see illustration on
page 48) which automatically adjusts the level
of illumination.
C -Unlocking the fuel filler door
Press this button when the car is at a standstill to unlock the fuel fil\
ler door. Please note that the fuel
filler door will remain unlocked until the car begins to move forward. A\
n audible click will be heard
when the fuel filler door relocks.

NOTE: If the fuel filler door does not unlock after the button has been press\
ed, drive the car at a speed
of at least 5 mph (8 km/h), stop the car, and press the button again. \
D - Front fog lights (option)
The front fog lights will function only in combination with the low beam\
headlights.
An LED in the switch indicates when the front fog lights are on.

Sideview mirror controls
Electrically operated sideview mirrors
The mirror control switches are located on the driver's door armrest.
Driver's side: Press the L switch (an LED in the switch will light up) to activate th\
e adjustment control
and then use this control to adjust the driver's door mirror.
Passenger's door: Press the R switch (an LED in the switch will light up) and then use t\
he adjustment
control to adjust the passenger's door mirror.
After you have adjusted the mirror(s), press the L or R switch again (\
the LED will go out) to deactivate
the adjustment control.
Remote central locking and sideview mirror memory If you lock the car and later unlock it with the
same remote control and open the driver's door, the sideview mirrors will au\
tomatically move to the
position they were in when you left the car. This feature will work in t\
he same way with all of the
remote control transmitters (up to 3) that you use with your car.
This feature will not function if you lock your car with the key. WARNING!
The mirrors should always be adjusted prior to driving. Objects seen in \
the wide-angle sideview
mirror are closer than they appear to be.

Electrically operated front seats (option)
From the time the driver's door is unlocked, the driver's seat can be ad\
justed with the ignition off during
a 10 minute period, if the door remains opened. If the door is closed, the seat can be adjusted for 40
seconds.

Turn the control for softer or firmer lumbar support.
Move the seat as far rearward as possible for easiest access to the lumb\
ar support control.

Electrically operated seats - general information
Adjusting the front seats:
The passenger's seat can only be adjusted if the ignition key is in posi\
tion I or II.
Driver's seat: The driver's seat can be adjusted if the ignition key is in position I o\
r II (see
page 35).
However, it can also be adjusted:
l Within 40 seconds after the ignition has been switched off (even if the\
key has been removed from the
ignition switch).
l Within 40 seconds after the driver's door has been unlocked with the key\
or remote control and
opened. The key does not have to be in the ignition switch during this p\
eriod.
Remote keyless entry system and driver's seat
The remote control transmitter also controls the electrically operated d\
river's seat in the following way:
l Adjust the seat to your preferences.
l When you leave your car, lock it using the remote control.
l The next time you unlock the driver's door with the same remote control(the one you used to lock the
doors with) and open the driver's door, the driver's seat will automati\
cally move to the position in which
you left it.
The seat will move to this position even if someone else has adjusted it\
since you last unlocked the car
with the same remote control.
NOTE:
l This feature will work in the same way with all of the remote control tr\
ansmitters (up to 3) that you
use with your car.
l This feature will not function if you lock your car with the key.

Nylon cargo net (option on XC70)
The Volvo XC70 can be equipped with a cargo net made of strong nylon fab\
ric that can be installed with
the rear seat backrests in the upright position or folded down. The uppe\
r and lower rods of the cargo net
are hinged. If the cargo net is folded, fold the rods until they are str\
aight and lock in position.
l Insert the end of the upper rod in the bracket A, near the ceiling liner\
in the cargo area if the rear seat
backrests are up or in the brackets above the rear passenger doors if th\
e backrests are folded down.
l Insert the opposite side of the rod in the upper bracket on the opposite\
side.
l Attach the lower straps to the eyelets on opposite sides of the rear car\
go area (if the rear seat backrest
is upright), or to the eyelets near the base of the rear seat, D (if t\
he backrest sections are folded down and
the upper rod has been attached to the forward brackets). Adjust the st\
raps to pull the net taut.

Auxiliary seat (option)
If all the seats are occupied, a rear-facing auxiliary seat in the cargo\
area can be used. This seat is
designed for two children, each weighing between 50 - 88 lbs. (23 - 40 \
kg) with a total seat capacity of
176 lbs. (80 kg) and up to 55 inches (140 cm) in height.
Raising
Remove the cargo area cover, if installed, from the car. Raise the backr\
est section forward until it locks
in place.
Flip the seat cushion over.
Lowering
Flip the seat cushion back into storage position.
Pull the release handle and lower the backrest to storage position. WARNING!
l If your car is equipped with an auxiliary seat (option or accessory), \
the tailgate must be fitted with
a lock cylinder. Unlocking from the outside can then be carried out in t\
he usual way (key in driver's
door and/or remote control) and also by using the key in the tailgate. \
l Both rear seat backrests must be up when the auxiliary seat is being use\
d. Do not use a booster
cushion or child seat in conjunction with the auxiliary seat.
l The luggage net should be retracted and the child safety lock in the tai\
lgate should be open to allow
access to the cargo area.
NOTE: If you have locked the car with the remote control and if you then after\
wards use a key in the
tailgate's lock cylinder (certain models) to unlock the tailgate only,\
the alarm will sound. See
page 80 for
information on turning off a sounding alarm.
