A code number is stamped on the number plate that came with the keys to your Hyundai. Thiskey number plate should not be left with the keysbut kept in a safe place, not in the vehicle. Thekey number should also be recorded in a placewhere it can be found in an emergency.If you need additional keys, or if you should loseyour keys, your authorized Hyundai dealer canmake new keys if you can supply the key num-ber.
o For the first 300 km (200 miles), try to avoid
hard stops.
o Don't lug the engine (in other words, don't drive so slowly in too high a gear that the
engine "bucks" shift to a lower gear).
o Whether going fast or slow, vary your speed from time to time.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than 3 minutes for a catalytic converter-equipped engine.

o Lock the door by turning the key toward the front of the vehicle and unlock it by turning the key toward the rear.

o If you fail to try the limp home procedurewith the sequence of three times, youhave to wait for about one hour to do thelimp home procedure again.
o If you cannot start your engine in spite of limp home procedure, have your vehicletowed by an authorized Hyundai dealer.

o Unlocked doors can be dangerous. Be- fore you drive away (especially if there are children in the car), be sure that all thedoors are securely closed and locked sothat the doors cannot be inadvertentlyopened from the inside. This helps ensurethat doors will not be opened accidentally.Also, when combined with the proper useof seat belts, locking the doors helps keepoccupants from being ejected from thecar in case of an accident.
o Before opening the door, always look for and avoid oncoming traffic. The doors can be locked without a key. Firstdepress the lock button, then close the door. NOTE:
o When locking the door this way, be careful
not to lock the door with the ignition keyleft in the vehicle.
o To prevent theft, always remove the igni- tion key, close all windows, and lock alldoors when leaving your vehicle unat-tended.

B040E03A-AAT CHILD-PROTECTOR REAR DOOR LOCK Your Hyundai is equipped with a "child-protec- tor" rear door lock assembly. When the lockmechanism is engaged, the rear door cannot beopened from the inside. It's use is recommendedwhenever there are small children in the rearseat.To engage the child-protector feature so that thedoor cannot be opened from the inside, move thechild-protector lever to the " " position andclose the door. Move the lever to the oppositedirection of " " position when normal dooroperation is desired.If you wish to be able to open the door from theoutside, the outside door handle will functionnormally.

B040D01X-AAT Locking from the Inside To lock your Hyundai from the inside, simply close the door and push the lock button down.When this is done, the door cannot be openedusing either the inside or the outside door handle.To unlock the car from the inside, pull up the lockbutton and then pull the inside door handle.

To move the seat toward the front or rear, pull
the lock release lever upward. This releases the seat on its track so you can move it forward orrearward to the desired position. When you findthe position you want, release the lever andslide the seat forward or rearward on its trackuntil it locks into the desired position and cannotbe moved further.

This system is controlled by the driver's door lock
and operates the passenger door locks. Whenthe driver's door is locked, the passenger doorsare locked automatically.If a rear door is open when the latch in depressed,it will remain locked when closed. If the frontpassenger door is open when the latch is locked,the outside door handle must be held in the raisedposition. When the door is closed, the door willremain locked. All doors will be unlocked auto-matically whenever the driver's door is unlockedwhether by key or latch. Indeed, your local's lawsmay require that some or all occupants of thevehicle use seat belts.

o The tail gate is opened by first turning the key clockwise to release the lock, then raising the door manually.

o To unlock the seatback, pull up on the
seatback locking knob, then pull forward onthe seatback.
o After being folded down rear seat, pull the lever on the rear side of the seat cushion tofold-up the seat cushion.

o When you return the rear seat to its up-right position, always be sure it has lockedinto position by pulling and pushing onthe top of the seatback.
o When you return the rear seat to its up right position after being folded down andfolded up, be careful not to damage the

buckle to get caught or pinched in the rearseat.

BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE
Before you start the engine, you should always:
1. Look around the vehicle to be sure there are no flat tires, puddles of oil, water or other indications of possible trouble.
2. After entering the car, check to be sure the parking brake is engaged.
3. Check that all windows, and lights are clean.
4. Check that the interior and exterior mirrors are clean and in position.
5. Check your seat, seatback and headrest to be sure they are in their proper positions.
6. Lock all the doors.
7. Fasten your seat belt and be sure that all other occupants have fastened theirs.
8. Turn off all lights and accessories that are not needed.
9. When you turn the ignition switch to "ON", check that all appropriate warning lights are operating and that you have sufficient fuel.
10. Check the operation of warning lights and all bulbs when key is in the "ON" position. o To start the engine, insert the ignition key
and turn it to the "START" position. Releaseit as soon as the engine starts. Do not hold
the key in the "START" position for morethan 15 seconds.
NOTE: For safety, the engine will not start if the

KEY POSITIONS WARNING:
The engine should not be turned off or the
key removed from the ignition key cylinderwhile the vehicle is in motion. The steering
wheel is locked by removing the key. o "START"
The engine is started in this position. It willcrank until you release the key. NOTE: Do not hold the key in the "START" position for more than 15 seconds.
o "ON" When the key is in the "ON" position, the
ignition is on and all accessories may be turnedon. If the engine is not running, the key shouldnot be left in the "ON" position. This will dis-
charge the battery and may also damage theignition system.
o "ACC" With the key in the "ACC" position, the some
electrical accessories (radio etc.) may be oper-ated.
o "LOCK" The key can be removed or inserted in thisposition. To protect against theft, the steeringwheel locks by removing the key. NOTE: To unlock the steering wheel, insert the key, and then turn the steering wheel and keysimultaneously.

Towing a Car With Automatic Transaxle

CAUTION: A car with an automatic transaxle should
never be towed from the rear with the front wheels on the ground. This can cause seri-ous damage to the transaxle. If the car mustbe towed from the rear, a towing dolly mustbe used under the front wheels.
If the car is being towed with the rear wheels on
the ground, be sure the parking brake is re-leased. D080D02X-GAT
Emergency Towing For emergency towing when no commercialtow vehicle is available, attach a tow cable,chain or strap to the two hooks under the frontof your car. Do not attempt to tow your vehiclein this manner on any unpaved surface. Thiscould result in serious damage to your car. Nor should it be attempted if the wheels, drive train, axles, steering or brakes are damaged.Before towing, be sure the transaxle is in neu-tral and the key is in "ACC" (with the engine off)or in the "ON" position (with the engine run-ning). A driver must be in the towed car to steerit and operate the brakes. CAUTION: If the car is being towed with all four wheels on the ground, it can be towed only from thefront. Be sure that the transaxle is in neutral.Do not tow at speeds greater than 50 km/h(30 mph) and for more than 25 km (15 miles).Be sure the steering is unlocked by placingthe key in the "ACC" position. A driver mustbe in the towed vehicle to operate the steer-ing and brakes.

IF YOU LOSE YOUR KEYS If you lose your keys, many Hyundai dealers can make you a new key if you have your keynumber. If you lock the keys inside your car andyou cannot obtain a new key, many Hyundaidealers can use special tools to open the doorfor you. Information about the key of immobilizer sys- tem (If installed) will be found on page 1-2.
NOTE: Before towing, check the level of the transaxle fluid. If it is below the "HOT" rangeon the dipstick, add fluid. If you cannot addfluid, a towing dolly must be used.
