Change Trans (Transmission) Fluid
This symbol appears
with the Change Trans
Fluid message.
This message indicates that the life of the transmission
fluid has expired and it should be changed within
200 miles. See ªMaintenance Scheduleº and
ªRecommended Fluids and Lubricantsº in the Index
for the proper fluid and change intervals.
When you reset the Change Trans Fluid message by
clearing it from the display, you still must reset the
transmission fluid life monitor separately. For more
information on resetting the transmission fluid life
monitor, see ªTransmission Fluid Life Monitor, How to
Resetº in the Index.Check Brake Fluid This symbol appears
with the Check Brake
Fluid message.
This message will display if the ignition is in ON to
inform the driver that the brake fluid level is low. Have
the brake system serviced by a technician as soon as
possible. See ªBrake System Warning Lightº in
the Index.

Engine Air Cleaner/Filter
The engine air cleaner/filter is in the engine
compartment on the driver's side of the vehicle, near the
front. See ªEngine Compartment Overviewº in the
Index for more information on location. The engine air cleaner/filter needs replacement
periodically. Use the information listed in this manual
as a guide for filter replacement intervals.
See ªMaintenance Scheduleº in the Index for more
information. In general, you should change the filter
whenever the indicator located on the cover turns
black. See the previous photo for the exact location
of the indicator.
The indicator may turn black earlier or later than the
suggested replacement intervals listed under
ªMaintenance Scheduleº in this manual. However, you
should replace the filter and reset the indicator once the
indicator turns black.
To check or replace the filter, do the following:
1. Remove the two screws located on the sides
of the cover.
2. Lift the cover off.

3. Pull out the old engine air cleaner/filter.
4. Install a new engine air cleaner/filter, if needed. See
ªNormal Maintenance Replacement Partsº later in
this section for the correct part number for the filter.
5. If the filter is replaced, reset the indicator by
pressing upward on the indicator from the bottom.
6. Reinstall the cover by reversing Steps 1 and 2.
Refer to the Maintenance Schedule to determine when to
replace the air filter.
See ªScheduled Maintenance Servicesº in the Index.
CAUTION:
Operating the engine with the air cleaner/filter
off can cause you or others to be burned. The air
cleaner not only cleans the air, it stops flame if
the engine backfires. If it isn't there, and the
engine backfires, you could be burned. Don't
drive with it off, and be careful working on the
engine with the air cleaner/filter off.
NOTICE:
If the air cleaner/filter is off, a backfire can
cause a damaging engine fire. And, dirt can
easily get into your engine, which will damage it.
Always have the air cleaner/filter in place when
you're driving.

Scheduled Maintenance
7-6Engine Oil Scheduled Maintenance
Change engine oil and filter as indicated by the
GM Oil Life System (or every 12 months,
whichever occurs first). Reset the system.
Your vehicle has a computer system that lets you know
when to change the engine oil and filter. This is based on
engine revolutions and engine temperature, and not on
mileage. Based on driving conditions, the mileage at
which an oil change will be indicated can vary
considerably. For the oil life system to work properly,
you must reset the system every time the oil is changed. When the system has calculated that oil life has been
diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is
necessary. A Change Engine Oil message in the Driver
Information Center (DIC) will come on. Change your oil
as soon as possible within the next two times you stop
for fuel. It is possible that, if you are driving under the
best conditions, the oil life system may not indicate that
an oil change is necessary for over a year. However,
your engine oil and filter must be changed at least once
a year and at this time the system must be reset. It is also
important to check your oil regularly and keep it at the
proper level.
If the system is ever reset accidentally, you must change
your oil at 3,000 miles (5 000 km) since your last oil
change. Remember to reset the oil life system whenever
the oil is changed. See ªOil Life Systemº in the Index
for information on resetting the system.
