6-9Hood Release To open the hood, do the following:
1. Pull the handle located
inside the vehicle to
the lower left of the
steering wheel.
2. Then go to the front of the vehicle and pull up on the
secondary hood release, located near the center of
the grill.
3. Lift the hood.

Before closing the hood, be sure all filler caps are on
properly. Pull down the hood and close it firmly. Engine Oil If the CHECK ENG OIL
LEVEL message appears
on the instrument cluster,
it means you need to check
your engine oil level
right away.

You should check your engine oil level regularly; this is
an added reminder.

6-30Power Steering Fluid
When to Check Power Steering Fluid It is not necessary to regularly check power steering
fluid unless you suspect there is a leak in the system or
you hear an unusual noise. A fluid loss in this system
could indicate a problem. Have the system inspected and
repaired. See ªEngine Compartment Overviewº in the
Index for reservoir location. How to Check Power Steering Fluid Turn the key off, let the engine compartment cool down,
wipe the cap and the top of the reservoir clean, then
unscrew the cap and wipe the dipstick with a clean rag.
Replace the cap and completely tighten it. Then remove
the cap again and look at the fluid level on the dipstick.
The level should be at the FULL COLD mark.
If necessary, add only enough fluid to bring the level
up to the mark.

Always use the proper fluid. Failure to use the proper
fluid can cause leaks and damage hoses and seals.

7-6 Engine Oil and Chassis Lubrication
Scheduled Maintenance Change engine oil and filter as indicated by the
GM Oil Life System  (or every 12 months,
whichever occurs first). Reset the system.
Your vehicle has a computer system that lets you know
when to change the engine oil and filter. This is based on
engine revolutions and engine temperature, and not on
mileage. Based on driving conditions, the mileage at
which an oil change will be indicated can vary
considerably. For the oil life system to work properly,
you must reset the system every time the oil is changed.
When the system has calculated that oil life has been
diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is
necessary. A CHANGE ENGINE OIL message will
come on. Change your oil as soon as possible within
the next two times you stop for fuel. It is possible that,
if you are driving under the best conditions, the oil life system may not indicate that an oil change is necessary
for over a year. However, your engine oil and filter must
be changed at least once a year and at this time the
system must be reset. It is also important to check your
oil regularly and keep it at the proper level.
If the system is ever reset accidentally, you must change
your oil at 3,000 miles (5 000 km) since your last oil
change. Remember to reset the oil life system whenever
the oil is changed. See ªOil Life Systemº in the Index
for information on resetting the system.
An Emission Control Service.
Lubricate chassis components with each engine oil and
filter change. Lubricate the front suspension, ball joints,
steering linkage, transmission shift linkage and parking
brake cable guides. Ball joints should not be lubricated
unless their temperature is 10
F (
- 12
C) or higher,
or they could be damaged.

7-21Part C: Periodic
Maintenance Inspections Listed in this part are inspections and services which
should be performed at least twice a year (for instance,
each spring and fall). You should let your dealer's
service department or other qualified service center
do these jobs. Make sure any necessary repairs are
completed at once.
Proper procedures to perform these services may be
found in a service manual. See ªService and Owner
Publicationsº in the Index.
Steering and Suspension Inspection Inspect the front and rear suspension and steering
system for damaged, loose or missing parts, signs of
wear or lack of lubrication. Inspect the power steering
lines and hoses for proper hook
- up, binding, leaks,
cracks, chafing, etc. Exhaust System Inspection Inspect the complete exhaust system. Inspect the body
near the exhaust system. Look for broken, damaged,
missing or out
- of
- position parts as well as open seams,
holes, loose connections or other conditions which could
cause a heat build
- up in the floor pan or could let
exhaust fumes into the vehicle. See ªEngine Exhaustº
in the Index.
Fuel System Inspection Inspect the complete fuel system for damage or leaks.
Engine Cooling System Inspection Inspect the hoses and have them replaced if they are
cracked, swollen or deteriorated. Inspect all pipes,
fittings and clamps; replace as needed. Clean the
outside of the radiator and air conditioning condenser.
To help ensure proper operation, a pressure test of
the cooling system and pressure cap is recommended
at least once a year.
